Re: Speed (running & exercise)

Watch out a bit, calf issues can turn into achilles issues because the calf cramps and puts strain on the tendon. I found that the easiest way to up mileage is to first do the bonus mileage in the pool, then gradually bring it to the road. Also, be sure you're doing your easy runs EASY. World-class ...

Okay, so I've been whittling it down. At NYC in Nov, I ran 3:04 against a 15mph headwind (for 20miles). Nice. Suenden. That's quite a drop. BCG, I can't recommend the vibram route. None of the serious runners wear them around here. A few wear zero-drop, but not vibrams. Decommissioned 4 pair of running shoes (350-619miles on them).

Re: Raccoon's thread of ethical dilemmas

Apparently this government person gets to pick an inefficient group to do a job, and they don't have to put it up for some bidding process that would at least somewhat increase efficiency involved. Is there no ethical obligation to report to someone higher up the chain that they are wasting taxpaye...

Re: Raccoon's thread of ethical dilemmas

I hope Rac won't mind me guest-posting on his thread. Ethical Dilemma: You are the program manager for a 100person contract to the govt. The Govt has asked you to perform some work that can be much more efficiently performed by a competing program of 10 people in the same amount of time for a very r...

Re: Kolproxy ascension script

I logged a bunch of bugs after trying HCBoris Day-2 with the script at your suggestion. It didn't get very far before I'd have to dive into your code to fix it. I returned to mafia when it kept insisting on getting a steel liver -- and the code looks like it wants to over-drink. You should probably ...

Re: Speed (running & exercise)

Thanks. Regarding cramps, first I'd recommend getting a electrolyte replacement for after/during runs. Nuun is great -- zero calorie. Or maybe some extra salt in your post-workout diet. (You are hydrating, right?). But the best bet is probably going to be a foam roller. These $20 torture devices wor...

Re: Speed (running & exercise)

Recovery week has been interesting. I'm pretty sure I'm losing a toe-nail. It's floating under a blood blister. I figure I'll just let it work itself out. I've been swimming to keep my cardio base, but let my joints etc rest from the running regiment. Did 60 laps (3km) on Monday, 100laps (5km) on Th...

Kinda hard to qualify for Boston w/o running a few more. ;)

And the cliche is completely true: it's a mental game after 20 -- I wanted to quit many times.

Re: Speed (running & exercise)

3:32 I made some tactical errors. I was chasing the 3:23 pace group with 7:45s until mile 17, then a few sub 8:00s. But at mile 21 I lost it with 9:31 then 8:18, 9:13, 9:10, 8:37. I'd say that's "hitting the wall". I finished with the gas tank on E. I had nothing left. I found my limit, wh...

Taper anxiety: It's expected to be 67F on Sunday. . . and "foggy" (read: humid).

Re: Speed (running & exercise)

Okay, 1 week to go until my Marathon. I suspect it's fashionable for runners to complain about the taper: "Oh, I can only run 50 miles this week; I feel like shit." So I was ready to feel relaxed and super-charged and brimming with speed like a colt waiting for the starting gun. But instea...

The anecdotal cost of not going pumpkins:

You have 7 bejeweled pledge pins.
You have 5 beer helmets.
You have 1 distress denim pants.
You have a bad day.

Re: Raccoon's thread of (mostly fiction) book reviews

I can just send you an overall summary of what happens when I finish the last book, which I just started today, if you don't want to read any more. If it's not too much trouble, I'd really enjoy reading it. I'm a sucker for What-Ifs. It's interesting to see it play out. I got a bit frustrated that ...

Re: Raccoon's thread of (mostly fiction) book reviews

Finished "Weapons of Choice" tonight. Realized I haven't read a Mass-paperback book since a high school fascination with SF. I kinda realize why -- I'm a lit snob. Lots of text, not enough meat. Or at least, the interesting part of the plot was spread out over 400 pages and ends in a cliff...
