Softcore 101: Stocking Hagnk's

I've received several requests recently for assistance with improving runs, and one of the first questions asked is "what should I have in Hagnk's to pull?". Rather than continually providing half answers, I've begun to compile a (hopefully) comprehensive list of everything that should be kept in Hagnk's for possible pulling. In some cases, items listed are more expensive that budgets will allow (canned air, NPZR head, etc), but are still listed for completeness. Also, not all items will be pulled every run, but should still be on hand in the event you'd like to pull them. No equipment (aside from quest related outfits) are listed, however I'll be adding those sometime in the future as time allows. I encourage everyone to add notes to this thread if I've missed anything, or if there are questions / comments on items on the list. Ideally we can come up with a full list of items which should be in stock, and possibly even add a "Shopping List" script which can help identify items which need to be replenished.

IIRC, it doesn't matter which one you pull when the trapz0r does not want chrome. Also, put mojo filters on that list.

Quite a list! And sadly, what Hagnk's pretty much looks like for me most of the time. Sometimes I wish I played hardcore :P

I didn't see Trapezoids on the list. Intentional? Not always useful, but at least limitedly so, eh?

Also, what about equipment for the houd-dog/hobo monkey to chameleonize for the level 12 quest?

Note: this is just me being nit-picky, as this list is fairly exhaustive :wink:

Pool cue/handful of hand chalk? I remember reading a log on here that mentioned those (I think it was Quantum Nightmare). Sorry if it is on there and I somehow missed it (it is a pretty huge and comprehensive list)

But I didn't see
-star chart
which you will need in order to assemble your star key, and which does not drop from the pie.

668's quest items, aren't they? recommend- switch to 334's unless i'm wrong, in which case i recommend pointing and laughing.

Both final combines (31337 and the dictionary scroll) are quest items, but the initial combines are not. This makes pulling 668 scrolls to turn into hermit clovers a possible option in some runs.

Excellent point on the stew, I'll add that.

Maybe the actual TPS drinks (like cherry bomb), since the list has the base drinks like old fashioned?

I've gotten stuck a few times pulling the TPS itself when I didn't think to mix the proper drink before ascending, so it would help remind me, at least!

anyone think about astral mushrooms/llama gongs/absinthe stocked in hagnks?

if mushrooms are pulled on day 1, in tandem with 3x mr. a, entangling noodles, 3x party favors...one can kill stuff in the great trip at level 1 for massive substat gain.

to be honest, this might not be a great pull on day 1, since if you have a you can just wait for them to drop.

also, would other familiar equips besides the suede shoes be good? ie the ones for the badger/llama/pixie?

If you're going the route of killing high ML stuff early on, then your best bet is probably the hobopolis sewer. There's a thread on the main forum about that, though it started out discussing the El Vibrato area for killing high ML enemies. The sewer has the advantage of not requiring any pulls to open up the zone, but they all require extra pulls to be able to kill the enemy you run into.

I can't imagine any familiar-specific equipment being useful besides the suede shoes. Those are basically used to get some more +combat when doing Sonofa Beach. It becomes obsolete once you collect enough lucre. For the other familiars, hopefully you put them in your terrarium while they were in Mr. Store.

Not sure if this bit of info is any useful:

While I was attempting the level 30 AT trophy, I found the set of jacks helped greatly to Mox up my character and I ascended sooner than the estimated date. Hence, would the old-fashioned Crimbo Pressie gifts help with stat gain if a character were to equip it throughout the run? +2 stat gain does make a significant amount after a few hundred turns 8-)

On my last speed attempt, I pulled the Crimbo offhand and a Pilgrim Shield. The Crimbo was useful to get to level two without a consumable and provided a nice boost each day to mainstat. The shield was debatably less good for stat gain, but it helped offstats, and the HP regeneration saved on healing items and MP, which I then dumped into buffs and skills. It worked fairly handily, but I was in oxy, so I knew I'd have more pulls than I would really need over the course of my run.

Star chart is listed twice. Hair spray (no longer can of hair spray) doesn't really need to be stocked in Hagnk's.

Star chart & hair spray fixed. The equipment suggestions mentioned above are not being added, as they will be covered in the upcoming equipment spotlight. Added gongs and absinthe, as these are viable options for leveling. I can't see a time where I'd actually pull an astral mushrooms, so this has been left off the list. If there's a viable reason to include it I'll be happy to listen to ideas.

I didn't add TPS drinks to the list, as in most cases those will not be in stock. My ultimate goal is to turn this into a greasemonkey script, ideally a "shopping list" tab in your quest journal. Have anything not currently on hand show up, to reduce the time it takes to restock for speed runs. Whenever that day comes, it would probably be a good place to add a "TPS is in stock, you should turn that into a drink" reminder.

I pointed a friend to this spreadsheet, just getting back into softcore and trying for something resembling speed. She saw the key pies, but she didn't realize she needed more than 1 digital and star pie. Maybe it's worth assuming that people might make that mistake once and then they will learn from it, or maybe a quantity field should be added. It could also go in the Notes column that multiple of those pies should be in stock, that actually seems best.

It's an interesting question, and one I gave some thought to. The question becomes "Qty needed per ascension" or "Qty to keep stocked to make sure you don't have to buy x1 run each time you're in the restock mode".

I'll add a couple notes to hopefully clarify this, but without a script to check against on-hand quantity, I'm hesitant to fill in more numbers than necessary.

You should turn your thing into an actual script. Just use acquire as your cli command. It'll only buy/make them if you don't already have however many in your inventory. So if the script says "acquire NPZR head," if you already have one, it won't do anything.

So that way you can run the script with impunity. HoD has something like this, but it's oldish and missing a few things.

So I've started to work on a mafia script for this, it prompts you for the number of runs you want to stock for, and then proceeds to make sure you have all the stuff.

Things it's still missing
-It doesn't do food/drink/spleen (except key pies) yet since that depends on mainstat & strategy
-It doesn't stock clovers since this is strategy dependent too
-It doesn't do clockwork maid, clockwork pirate skull, or Ninja pirate zombie robot head (again, strategy dependent, I chose to just get the meat maid)
-probably some other stuff is missing too, I mostly got tower/3 gate items, and items need for the quests.

Things to note
-I made assumptions of the number of some things to buy based on my strategy/preferences (like it acquires 11 tomb ratchets per run)
-The lines for the old fashioned crimbo items are commented out to avoid expensive surprises.
- I've only done minimal testing on one character for this, so use w/ care.

Any comments are welcome. This script buys things from the mall regardless of your mafia setting for auto buy from mall. It does remember your setting for that preference and restores it after running the script.

You say acquire 2 of each, but you didn't put 2*runs in the code. Fix comment or code. ;-)

I'm not certain, but I believe acquire will construct if it can, in which case this second command may consume some of the previously acquired chrome ore, leaving you with fewer than you intended to have. Swap these to acquire the guitarrr(s) first and you should be okay in this case.

I actually mentioned this to her already, and my thinking was that the end user should be able to easily configure whether or not to get 1 or X of ALL consumable things like that, since you might smash/autosell everything possible once you're done with it. I thought that up when it came to dope wheels, which initially acquired X of them instead of 1. Maybe a prompt, or a single variable to change at the top of the script.

Yeah, I left it in there out of laziness, but you're right that it's no longer necessary, and probably makes the script considerably more expensive to run if you put anything other than "1".

Include two or three cameras? Lately I've been thinking about, on a three-day run, pulling a camera, using it with a runaway in the wine cellar, and then hopefully getting all bottles to drop in one turn.

A bartender is a better pull. It has everything you need for a camera, plus a spare lens if you have a spare box for some reason (like, say, exploding a chef).

That's what the "acquire" command does- it checks to see if you have the item first, then it crafts it if you have the ingredients, then it buys it.

I've been working on a stocking script this week, too. I have a couple of questions from Lost's script. (1) Are the boris's rings in case you decide not to eat pies, but to get the zapping wand? (2) There's a section of stuff to have in case you mess up, including vitachoconutriment capsules and fancy but probably evil chocolate. Why are those for in case you mess up?

Also, thanks to everyone who's posted stocking suggestions and scripts as starting points.

These both give you adventures without filling spleen/stomach/liver. I would imagine they're a last resort pull if you're only a few adventures shy of being able to meet your goal.

"buy" will buy the items even if you already have them, ignoring any settings to not buy from the mall or NPC stores (buying an extra 2 melanges and 6 cans of air every time you run this probably isn't what you want if you already have them). "acquire" only gets things you have, but it follows the NPC/mall settings, so you need to tell mafia to use those places temporarily (either manually like I do, or with a script like what smanoli posted).

Good call. The only other one that comes to mind now is shore scrip. That and super expensive stuff (like "crap, my v-mask is on my mall multi!"). Not sure you can really fix that though, aside from having enough meat on hand to buy from mall. Or having nerves of steel and stocking it under mall and hoping you can be the first to buy it.

What's untradeable and consumable...? Dictionaries?

In what path are you pulling unfinished ice sculptures?

For the current path, all you need to prep is Shore Scrip and possibly Odd Silver Coins. For other paths, I think nonvegan covers it.

I'd pull an unfinished ice sculpture in a lazy run where I see that Adventurer echos give 58k meat per copy. Or maybe in a budgetcore run. Or maybe in some other kind of run. They're cheap and untradeable and potentially useful; you should have some in Hagnk's.
