Skill/IotM plan for a fledgling speedrunner

Post by stevieray » Tue Jul 12, 2011 1:51 pm

So I'm interested in the softcore speed game. I know I'm miles away from anything resembling optimal, but any advice on what to perm and what to buy would be greatly appreciated.

I'm currently slogging away to get Olfaction and meatfarming. I plan to perm Advanced Cocktailcrafting once I finally get my sniffytome.

My permed skills are:
Spirit of Ravioli - what an awesome mis-click that was :|
Superhuman Cocktailcrafting
Torso Awaregness
Ambidextrous Funkslinging
Shieldbutt
Empathy of the Newt
Amphibian Sympathy

My IotMs:
Greatest American Pants
Juju Mojo Mask
Operation Patriot Shield

My FotMs:
Rogue Program
L'il Xenomorph
Slimeling (not really a FotM, but it's special, too!)

Where do I focus my attention first? Bander? Bugbear? Stocking Mimic? Pumpkins? So many choices!

Thanks!

Do you have the VIP key?

Also if you haven't set up a BCC profile, that helps as well for looking at your familiars/skills etc.

No, I don't have a VIP key. That really should be priority #1, I guess?

Here's my BCC profile:

For the fax machine alone yes.

Skills -
entangling noodles
ode
mad looting skillz
phat loot
sonata & smooth movement

I would consider all of those perm right away skills.

Familiars-
Probably going to be a bander replacement soonish
Hipster & Bugbear would be my first choices for softcore
Angel is helpful but if you're on a budget you could skip
He-Bo is tricky, you can pull pumpkins. But the He-bo is pretty pricey.

Items-
Crown of Thrones - unfortunately expensive already
Spooky Putty - still affordable
Legion Loathing Knife - its skip-able but it's still fairly cheap and handy
Pumpkins are pretty great but you could probably skip them if on a budget

I'm not a huge help in the skill department, but I can help in the purchasing department;

Roughly in this order:
1.
A. A VIP key (Many benefits, the hot tub cures negative status effects i.e. beaten up/poisoned, the April shower for a tuned + stat buff [moxie, muscle, Or mysticality respectively], a crimbo tree for a little extra meat if needed, the tea party drink for a myriad of buffs, and mostly for the fax machine (A once per day monster fight, you can choose which to fight like ascii or a ghost for pixels.)

Or

B. Spooky putty (presents a way to get 5 copied monsters per day, like asciis or ghosts). I think this IoTM is way underrated by most people.

2. A loathing legion knife (again a myriad of tools, + stat, + meat, + item, + spell damage, elemental resistance [Guano junction], and many helpful others)

3. A stat familiar (Bugbear or Bandersnatch). I would personally go Bugbear unless you have the extra money and a free pull for the Jub-jub. If you do have the money though, the bandersnatch has free runaways which can decrease a run anywhere from 18-35 turns with runaways alone

4. Crown of Thrones. This is always an awesome IoTM to pull, A myriad of familiars can go in here. If you have an el-vibrato Megadrone, you never have to worry about MP again, and a side-effect of having the megadrone is a bonus to Ml, giving + 2 stats per adventure.

5.a. A hipster. The hipster works exceptionally well at reducing delay with free fights that don't take an adventure, who doesn't love free stats?

Or

B. A he boulder. The he-boulder gives you a yellow ray capable of dropping necessary outfits that otherwise would be farmed/pulled.

I had to rush through that, but I will try to edit it further later. Those are only approx. starter IoTMs needed, and some people may have other thoughts that I overlooked/didn't talk about.

Edit: a couple links real quick to help.

This link is more for Hardcore, but helps with familiars and a few IoTM choices.

Stupac's guide is fairly old, but worth a look at the IoTm/familiar info. Also has a couple logs/roadmaps for a newbie to look at.
Sincerely yours,
