This is where you spade, shovel and sickle. Or is it reap?

Ancient cities -- non-random spirit dist

Post by NardoLoopa » Tue Apr 15, 2008 5:43 pm

I've encountered a very suspicious distribution of Ancient Spirits this run.

Code: Select all

a----
-d-sa
--s-t
-s-s-
a---s

Where "d" is Dakoda,
"t" is temple
"a" is altar
"s" is spirit

This clearly doesn't look random. Are there certain "maps" to the ancient cities? Where we can predict where the temples are?

[edit: complete map]

There's only three altars there, and in isolation the spirits look random enough to me. However, if a pattern were to be discovered, the benefits would rival the fortune cookie discovery in turn savings.

okay, maybe the pattern is hard to see if without a mono-spaced font.

Except for the upper right corner, the map forms a big 'X', exclude the temple and one alter on the right-hand side.

Code: Select all

a----
-d-sa
--s-t
us-s-
a--us

'u' for unexplored. Forgot there are 4 altars.

This sure does not look random -- then again, random things can randomly not look random.

Code: Select all

a-a--
sd--s
sa-a-
ss---
-t---

Where "d" is Dakoda,
"t" is temple
"a" is altar
"s" is spirit

I think that was it.

Here is te result from my current run

Code: Select all

-S-A-
T-A--
-S---
S-D-A
S_A--

(the _ one was never checked, since I've already found everything interesting)

And this was the order that I checked them

Code: Select all

 7  6  5  4  2
 8  9 10  3  1
11 12 13 14 15
16 20 22 23 17
21 -- 24 18 19

So the order that I found them in was

---A-S-T-A-S---SA---SD-A

Code: Select all

S_A__
 A
    A
STSS
A _DS

A = alter
S = spirit
D = phd
T = temple
= Normal square
_ = unexplored

I think there is definitely a pattern. I was 8 for 10 at the beginning. Then I had the unfortunate rows 2 and 3 when I only needed 1 more spirit and the temple. Should have gone straight for row 4, since it didn't have an alter (thus I think it is more likely to have the temple--check the pattern in the others' data).

Here's a couple that my multis have been sitting on for a while:

Code: Select all

   ST
  SSS
  AAA
    A
 DS__

Code: Select all

S SSA
D T A
    A

SSA

I don't see much of a pattern, but here you are anyway.

This thread provoked me to finally make an account here. :D

Code: Select all

T-AS-
SA--D
--A-S
--S--
-A___

I've been wondering about this lately. No clue if there's actually any pattern or not, but it seems worth a look (or at least some lazy data collection).

This post by Carl gives you an idea of what to expect while doing the Hidden City in terms of total turns spent.

Layout from a previous run:

Code: Select all

S---A
----T
-SD-A
---sA
SS--A

[Lowercase 's' denotes spirit w/ obsidian dagger.]

Order is the same way you read it. (Unless your native language is Hebrew or something.)

Is it just me, or does it look like the spirits are almost always next to something else? Now, for this to be true, you need to consider that edges "wrap" around (left-right, top-bottom). So, if you find a temple/dakota/spirit, it's best to search the squares around it first? I'll start trying this out in future runs.

That's only because the majority of spaces are "next to" something else. Picking the last sample posted, there's the 6 other things, and 15 spaces that are next to them. That's only 4 spaces not next to them. If you count diagonal instead of just up/down/left/right, then every space is next to them.

I deviated a bit from my usual left-right, top-bottom routine. I strongly suspect the squares are all pre-mapped (like the tavern), but here's the results in click sequence anyway:

Code: Select all

A----AASD-----sSA--S

I have a vague feeling that there's a pattern. It's just as likely to be a clustering illusion, though.

? remained unexplored because I had finished the quest. Explored left to right, top to bottom.
