Pirate revamp spading

Post by greycat » Fri Dec 07, 2007 10:49 am

There are several unknown issues with the new pirate revamp material. Including, but not limited to:
  • Tract vs. pamphlet vs. brochure availability
  • Retort collection mechanics
  • F'c'le cleaning quest item mechanics
  • Noncombat vs. superlikely status of adventures

For the bookstore, the question is, what determines which of the three +10% literature will be available in your bookstore? So far, it seems to be the same every time you go there within a single run, but I've not yet seen any solid evidence of a correlation between the literature and your class, sign, stats, etc.

For the retort collection, is there any way to diversify (speed up) the collection of previously unheard retorts? Do you get better results if you try different zones (out of disguise vs. barrr), or if you have varying +ML, equipment, effects, ....

For the cleaning quest, Skullhead hints at mechanics that will speed up the acquisition of the quest items. Do these mechanics affect the encounter rate of the pirate you need to see, or the drop rate of the item from that pirate, or both? What are the mechanics?

For the O Cap'm adventure in particular: is this a noncombat, or a superlikely? (Anecdotal evidence so far points toward superlikely, with a 1/40 or 1/50 probability.)

I just finished the f'c'le in 6 turns.

First fought 2 crusty pirates. Then fought a clingy pirate, and used a cocktail napkin to kick her off the f'c'le (ends combat automatically). Next three turns were the three required pirates, each one dropping a "usable" item, a quest item, and a random item. I also used the quest item and the "usable" item that dropped, when it dropped.

So: kick the clingy pirate off the ship with a cocktail napkin. Fight a cleany pirate, use Swabbie Swab. Fight a creamy pirate, use Oil Of Parrrlay. Fight a curmudgeonly pirate, use all-purpose cleaner. Next turn is the noncombat giving the pirate fledges.

148 adventures on the Poop Deck with Musk + Confrontation. Got the "O Cap'm" adventure 3 times.

This is definitely not a regular noncombat. Could be superlikely, scheduled, or something else....

Next day:
243 adventures on the Poop Deck with smooth, sonata, conflict, no +ML other than MCD. Not sure what the ballrom song is. Result: 8 "O Cap'm"s.

I heard a speculation the other day that it acts like a noncombat after a delay of however-many turns. If the noncombat rate is fairly high after that delay, then this theory would match the data I have so far.

Next multi:
Theory: you must spend 30 turns, during which it is impossible to get another O Cap'm. After 30 turns, it becomes an eligible noncombat adventure.
Experiment: Get O Cap'm. Then spend 30 turns. Then swap in the ring of conflict, and adventure until O Cap'm. Repeat as time permits.
Result: false. Got O Cap'm on the 30th adventure after the previous one.

The delay period could be 29 turns, though.

O Cap'm almost certainly almost certainly requires you to spend a certain number of turns on the Poop Deck before it recurs. Jick said as much on the radio.

Another interesting thing: the cursed dirty joke scoll does X spooky and X sleaze damage where X is approximately equal to 50% of your buffed Mox. Presumably the other two combat items from the booty chests are similar and correspond to your other stats. Assuming the damage doesn't cap, this now makes fighting the beer golem in the basement a lot easier, for one thing.

EDIT: Quantum, regarding what you said about useable items on the F'c'le, so are you saying that using those potion items guarantees a different one of the required pirates to show up on the next turn?

Some turn numbers: 36, 61, 91, 123, 153, 183, 216, 247, 278, 308.
Almost looks like the FoB monster appearance formula...

The real question is, with the pirate ship: do those intervening turns actually have to be spent in the poop deck? If not, that makes getting that zombie pirate outfit a lot less scary.

I think the items are all used to modify which monster you can encounter. I don't know if they work by eliminating monsters from the area (harold's bell mechanic) or by increasing odds of a certain monster appearing (odor extractor mechanic), but I've been hearing scary things about the f'c'le. And by using the items in the way I did, it was a trivial zone.

Edit: I just got a clingy pirate 21 turns after using a cocktail napkin on one.
Also, I received a creamy pirate while "well oiled".

Yes, they do. Here's some data:

494: Take the wheel
493-486: Belowdecks
485-482: Palindome
481-469: Spooky Forest
468-436: Poop deck
435: Take the wheel

If it would have been a simple 30 +/- interval, I should have seen "take the wheel" within the first ten turns of returning to the poop deck. Instead, I got it on turn #33 after returning. This suggests you can set course once for every 30 or so turns spent on the poop deck.

Yes... that is painful.

And some more turn #s taken from spending my remaining turns on the poop deck:

435 - 404 - 374 - 344 - 312 - 281 (reverse order, those are ronin turns left)

Girlfriend's account:

35 - 79 (15 turns airship in between) - 111 - 142 - 181 - 212 - 242

So far the "29 turns with maxed item drop, then switch in the ring of conflict" theory has been working. Granted, the data we've got so far is still a small sample.

The best spading we have on delayed noncombats is on the ballroom quartet. That noncombat cannot be seen for 19 turns after it was last seen. So it would make sense that a counter for the "take the wheel" would function in a similar way (30 adv counter - 1 for present adventure = 29 adventure counter).

I don't have anything particularly useful to add, but I've found out, mostly accidentally, that all-purpose cleaner removes negative status effects, including goofball withdrawal.

Sorry to say this doesn't seem to work quite so well. Just playing through it now again. The cocktail napkin indeed has a Harold's Bell type effect on the clingy pirate, but it doesn't seem to alter the rates of appearance for anything else, or drop rates. I'm not convinced the items do either.

I've spent 20 turns with Swabbie Swab active waiting for the creamy pirate to drop the damn ball polish, with no success, and they don't seem to be showing up at a high rate.

Oh, edit: My guess would be there are other items that can bell away the crusty and chatty pirates, but I don't know what they are. Not any of the stuff that drops at the F'c'le. Right now I'm really despising this zone.

Small sample size, only one I've got right now!

Started with 4 taunts... next set of combats:

5th taunt.
6th taunt.
duplicate.
duplicate.
duplicate.
7th taunt.
duplicate.
duplicate.
duplicate.
duplicate.
3-headed monkey
duplicate.
rubber-glue
duplicate.
duplicate.
duplicate.
duplicate.
fights like a cow
duplicate.
duplicate.
duplicate.
8th taunt

Also, random miscellaneous math. Chance to win beer pong with X known insults:

Code: Select all

3 =   1.79%
4 =   7.14%
5 =  17.86%
6 =  35.71%
7 =  62.50%
8 = 100.00%

Nice math. Translated, 5 or more insults is the way to go. Reasoning? It seems to me that the beer pong adventure happens every 10 turns, and 5 insults is the minimum amount to average less than 10 turns to win (5.6 turns, to be exact).

Once you start beer pong, you have the choice to try again, or return to the bar. Since you can force when beer pong starts (wait to use orc map), you'll be able to choose how many insults you have for pong. The appearance rate for pong is irrelevant.

So the real question is figuring out the formula for taunt acquisition.

No lovin' here in the F'c'le. It seems that each run, you will be screwed over by one of the three F'c'le quest items -- the mop, the polish, or the shampoo. The other two always seem to drop easily.

(As greycat in hardcore) I'm currently being screwed over by the mop. I can't get curmudeon pirates to show up frequently, and when they do bother to show up, they don't want to drop their mops. Oil of Parrrlay doesn't seem to do anything to help, either -- if anything, it seems to attract chatty pirates (but that may be a false result due to insufficient data).

10 adventures in the F'c'le as lightgreycat, level 9 Bad Moon TT.
The bookstore has the tract.
23 lb. fairy plus Envy plus Peeled Eyeballs (and rabbit's foot? unsure.)
  1. noncombat: pliers
  2. chatty (no drops)
  3. creamy (polish, oil, stout) -- used polish
  4. curmudgeonly (charrrm, sawdust)
  5. crusty (barrrnacle, charrrm)
  6. clingy -- napkinned -- cleanly (no drops)
  7. cleanly (no drops)
  8. noncombat: chamber music
  9. noncombat: impractical joke
  10. creamy (no drops)
(Those are my last turns for today, so I'll continue tomorrow.)

After spending several turns outside this zone and returning (24-25 lb. fairy, eyedrops, Envy, rabbit's foot):
  11. cleanly (shampoo, swab) -- used shampoo
  12. crusty (barrrnacle)
  13. noncombat: chatterboxing (ride it out)
  14. chatty (no drops)
  15. noncombat: impractical joke
  16. noncombat: impractical joke
  17. clingy (no drops)
  18. creamy (no drops)
  19. clingy (no drops)
  20. noncombat: impractical joke
  21. cleanly (toothpaste, swab)
  22. curmudgeonly (cleaner)
  23. chatty (no drops)
  24. noncombat: pliers
  25. cleanly (toothpaste)
  26. creamy (no drops)
  27. cleanly (no drops)
  28. curmudgeonly (mop, charrrm, cleaner)

I'm starting to wonder if there's a gremlin mechanic here -- waiting for them to take some action in combat before killing them, or using something on them... I dunno. I'm probably just grasping at straws.

Just spent about 100 turns on the F'c'lem posting a mini-adventure summary to hopefully help get to the bottom of what's going on here. Only item drop was a 20lb flaming gravy fairy. Finally received the final drop while under the effect of the pirate reading material. Also, there are a couple of combat useable items that drop on the F'c'le... could these influence anything?

Potential breakthrough. During the Chatterboxing choice adventure, choosing "distract them with shiny objects" seems to have a Harold's Bell effect on the chatty pirates. I was able to encounter this adventure 3 times, and it took 28, 26, and 22 turns before the next chatty pirate showed up.

I tried using the toothpaste and sawdust on the crusty pirates, neither seemed to have any effect. Given there is a way to remove two of the unwanted monsters from this zone, I anticipate there is some way to remove the crusty ones as well.

edit: more Chatterboxing data: 28, 22, 18, 22. It also removes the Chatterboxing adventure as well. In all cases a chatty pirate was encountered before the Chatterboxing adventure came back as well.

From what I recall, the Bell effects (napkin & chatterbox w/ trinket) do not take an adventure.

Data point for bookstore:
Level 9 Seal Clubber, Bad Moon

Didn't record stats (sorry) but at low Level 8 as an AT in BM I was offered the Myst boosting pirate tract.

On a side note... the Chatterboxing stat gains aren't too bad (was getting 100ish mainstat). If you choose the "distract them" option to increase the combat odds of the wanted pirates, you also take away this choice adventure as potential stats.

I'll say it again: I know there is a lot to still be spaded, but the new pirates content gives me hope for the game.

Also, I thinks swabs might increase initiative, but I don't know how to test that.

Testing to see if charrrm bracelets modify the combat encounter rates on the F'c'le.

Equip: eyepatch, war tongs, swash pants, parrot, monster bait, tarrrnished charm bracelet.
Effects: confrontation, empathy, shanty, phat loot
Other: Used cocktail napkin on all clingy pirates, chose "distract them" whenever possible on the Chatterboxing adventure.

Code: Select all

Noncombat: An Impractical Joke (2)
Noncombat: Chatterboxing (3)
Noncombat: Come on Baby, Find My Pliers (4)
Noncombat: The Chamber Music of the Sea (3)
Combat: chatty pirate (30)
Combat: cleanly pirate (40)
Combat: clingy pirate (11)
Combat: creamy pirate (43)
Combat: crusty pirate (39)
Combat: curmudgeonly pirate (44)

Conclusion: The tarrrnished charm bracelet does not modify encounter rates for any specific pirates.

I did notice something though while collecting these. There seems to be two mechanics at work here. There are a number of insults that you say to the pirates, then the pirate seems to have a chance to either respond with a beer pong insult, or with a generic message.

From now on, I'd request all data in the form of (We say) (They reply) to work on the rates for each of those aspects.

291 pirates fought, 211 correct insults obtained (72.5%)

Odds of a correct insult did not vary depending on the # of insults known.

Yeah, it looks like the insults work something like:

-Determine which of the 8 starter insults to choose.
-25% chance to get a bad reply (25% confirmed by Jick on radio last night)
-If you get a good reply, and you haven't heard it yet, you learn that insult for beer pong.

Any weighting that is applied would be done at the first step, where the initial insult is determined.

They also said on the radio that there was NOT a way to remove the crusty pirates, because they couldn't think of anything funny...

Good to hear that was confirmed. It looks like the big questions left to be answered are:

1) Likelihood of unknown insults being used (maybe a queue mechanic?)
2) Effect of swabbie swab and oil of parrrlay

Foggy posted on the wiki that oil of parrrlay gives +10 DR, and he's usually trustworthy. Since friederike showed that the cleaner reduces one negative status effect.. swabbie swab just might be an initiative boost and thus completely irrelevant to the f'c'le quest (pure speculation in this post, no testing done of as yet).

Oil of parrrlay definitely reduces the damage you take. Also, I still don't know how to test initiative, but look at this:

(Note that turns 2198 - 2202 are with both well-swabbed ear and spiky hair, which only leaves the 15 turns from 2203 to 2217 with well-swabbed ear alone, which isn't all that much.)

Do you have a link to that post Brulak? From my original testing, I recall trying that, but wasn't experiencing 100% as I missed a couple. I'll give that another shot next time through though, I might be remembering incorrectly.

It's a thread in the HCN members only area. I do not have access on my own, so no link :( Also, that may have just been a rumor. I'll try to find out more on my current run.

Yes, it's something we've experienced anecdotally. I don't believe it myself, but my attempt at proving it wrong this run failed when I got 100% quest item drops when using the book :?

Thanks for the confirmation Tek. Does HCN ever give like "Esteemed guests" access to the bottom forums? I've found myself wanting to comment on the private logs more than the public ones, and any spading work would be nice to share.

I just used the Insult Book on a creamy pirate in round 1, then beat him up (several rounds later), and got only an Oil of Parrrlay -- no ball polish. (And this was my first adventure in this zone this run.)

Hardcore, seal clubber, Phat Loot, both passives, NPZR.

Going back to a fairy now.

This run was a 10 turn f'c'le. I used the insult book on everybody, and tagged the cleanly pirate on turn #9 when it was the last one with a relevant item missing. Item drops were: 45 (jek belt) + 30 passive (looting skills and pickpocketing) + 20 (phat loot) =+95.

three relevant item drops from six relevant encounters. the rest were chatty/clingy/crusty or repeat appearances.

I'm surprised no one has tried that yet: Using toothpaste against a toothy pirate give this:

Code: Select all

You're fighting a toothy pirate

You drop the tube of toothpaste on the ground, and the toothy pirate immediately picks it up.

"Yarrr. Just what I've been lookin' fer," he says, as he whips out a toothbrush and goes to town on his teeth.

When he's done, he beams a smile at you -- a smile so bright that you're pretty sure it makes a creepy outline of your silhouette on the wall behind you.

You gain 125 Mojo Points.

I've tested that for a few turns and got 101-146 MP. Also, you can do that every turn, apparently.

Actually, 8th cleanly if you look at turn 950 ;)

I'm suspecting more and more that a certain combat item has a narrative effect in speeding up this process.

Edit: Also, see http://afh.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=1101&mforum=afh

Something about those Cleanly Pirates...hmmm. Took 7 of em' to drop the quest item. Granted I was running no +item buffs, but wanted some data on the base drop rate. It just seems odd to me, that it took 2 Creamy Pirates, 3 Curmudgeonly Pirates, and 7 Cleanly Pirates! That plus the dataset above seem to indicate some hidden possibility surrounding the Cleanly Pirates.

Give me more data :D

+50% item drop (phat loot, looting skillz, observation) and a 17 lb fairy. No other effects.

chatty
curmudgeonly (dropped mop)
creamy (dropped polish)
cleanly (rigging shampoo)

Wish this could have happened on a speed run.

All passive item drops, blue snowcone, phat loot. +5%noncombats.

Chatty
Curmudgeonly
Creamy
Crusty
Curmudgeonly (mizzenmast mop)
Clingy Pirate (cocktail napkin)
Chamber Music of the Sea
Crusty
Cleanly (rigging shampoo)
An Impractical Joke
Come on Baby, Find my Pliers
Creamy (ball polish)
Fledges

General conclusion (or guess): Due to recent changes to item drop, hard to tell if cocktail napkin has a significant effect. Therefore, I'd say it's useful for eliminating one monster from the cue, and may have an effect, but that's it. Either way, it's much more managable then it was.

None that I know of, but I think it'd be useful, as they both seem pretty high. I got the max 150 mox from the third choice of A Test of Testarrrsterone a couple times with only 70-something mainstat, and on another run got over 400 myst from one of the O Cap'm locations at a bit over 104 mainstat.

My thinking exactly.

Of course, a ToDo-list of mine does play a part in me asking. >.>
