Eevilcat's HCO 10/754 Sauceror Run (failed 9-day attempt)

This is a combination log and thinking out loud of my strategy for HCO, it's probably not the most optimal strategy but it seems to work and I'm pretty fast with a current best of 10/750.

I'm back doing HCO runs not only because they take a lot less time but mostly because I enjoy them. I've got quite a lot of skills permed now; profile is here http://bumcheekcity.com/kol/profile.php ... mcheekcity. Some of the skills like executive narcolepsy and fashionably late were permed primarily for HCO runs. This time round I'm perming the remaining slime skill (slimy synapses) though I'm still a quite a few glands short of maxing out on all the slime skills. Lead-in was a HCO AT run so I'll have 3 x air and a plexiglass pendant for later. I'm aiming to hit 9 days on this run and hoping for significantly better turngen from spleen items than the previous run which got pushed out to 10 days.

I've got a complete telescope and the tower says: Black No2, powdered organs, spider web, firecracker, hairspray, can lid & dynamite. This is about as easy as it gets other than the powdered organs which can be a total pain.

HCO to me is about managing my available resources in the most optimal way and as the game has got more complex the resource juggling act forces you to keep a lot more balls in the air. HCO just means there is a lot less room for manoeuvrability as you are constrained by the number of daily adventures. Here is my juggle list:

1) Generate spleen adventures - this means running a spleen familiar, I personally favour the rogue program as it restores MP at the same time as helping kill monsters. Backup spleen familiar is the sandworm and the llama rarely gets a look-in nowadays. I try to get some spare drops early on as I will need them later to compensate for areas where I need to run a fairy/leprachaun. I'm aiming to get spleen of steel for day 3.

2) Maximise rollover adventures. I'll aim to make a meatmaid on day 1 and later a chrome weapon if the Trapzor doesn't want chrome ore (using Unacompanied Miner/Inigo's so it doesn't cost adv). I'll try for a dead guy's watch and Fashionably Late also gives me +1 adv on rollover.

3) Maximise +ML to maximise stat gains and beef up monsters enough to withstand sauce synergy. I start the game with +10ML from the detuned radio and will continue to pile on +ML as and when it is available. In HCO this means getting the pail day 1 and using the Mad Hatter +ML buff daily alongside 3 x pumpkin juice plus running Ur-Kel's as soon as I can afford the MP. I'll also look to maximise ML from my outfit - hipposkin poncho is a given and I may use faxbot/he-bo to get the +20ML from the snake knight drops (that also lets me fall back on noodlebutt). An alternative is the curmudgel/grumpy man charm in the course of doing the F'c'le.

4) Use faxbot in combination with the Obtuse Angel romantic arrow or He-Bo to reduce adventure count. This generally means faxing in something a lot higher level so I need to be able to survive a possible hit to noodle and kill it quickly. My current fax plan is:
day 1 - ghost (arrow)
day 2 - kge
day 3 - ghost (arrow)
day 4 - ascii art (arrow)
day 5 - snake knight (yellow ray)
day 6 - astronomer (arrow)
day 7 - lobsterfrogman (arrow)
day 8 - lobsterfrogman (arrow)
day 9 - gate/tower item (yellow ray)

5) Maximise hipster fights.

6) Make best use of bander free runaways - opening knob, Spookyraven and Hidden Temple for starters.

7) Make best use of yellow rays - need to tie in with faxbot for some targets. Obvious choices are hippy, miner and frat warrior. Other possibilities are snake knight, curmudgeonly pirate, grungy pirate (if no guitar by then) and Bob Racecar (hound/stunt nuts). You get a lot of YRs in oxycore and I'd normally use one or two for tower items.

8) Make best use of romantic arrows.

9) Get some stocking mimic drops for later. Polka pops really help with tomb rats and Bittersweet tarts are a nice to have on stat day(s).

10) Track the semi-rare window for ascii art and inhaler.

11) Make best use of summons e.g. tasteful items with free rests and candy hearts/divines.

12) Rollover maximum adventures for the stat day while juggling the above!!!



Day 1 for me is about getting a pail then 3 spleen item drops, hitting level 4 to be able to consume them and making a meatmaid. It's only a 1 clover day so I fish the sewer and have Innabox make a rock n roll legend to maximise AT buffs. The other clover is for a disembodied brain for making the meatmaid so my class epic weapon will have to wait until tomorrow. The meatmaid is dependent on getting a smart skull to drop in the cemetary but I usually get at least one. I opted to yellow ray a wasp in the red queen's garden for the +moxie/MP regen wig as it will power noodles. An alternative would have been the graverobber as that would yield both a dead guy's watch and coffin lid but I used the slimeling there to help with the conditional shovel drop and it was important to get early gains from the pail ML buff. I also fax in and romantic arrow a ghost at the start of day 1 as it gives me both white pixels and extra stats. MP can be a bit scarce day 1 so I rely on the rogue program and the pool table buff to power the AT madrigal/mojo/power ballad suite as well as leash and holiday weight gain. I've got enough passive +init not to bother with springy just yet. It took until turn 39 to get all 3 spleen items and I stopped for the day as soon as I had the meatmaid. Along the way I opened Spookyraven with 3 hipster fights finishing off with bander runaways in the Outskirts of Cobb's Knob.

Day 2 goal is to hit level 6 and roll over enough adventures to be able to get spleen of steel on day 3. I've still got Ode running from day 1 so begin with runaways until I've got the encryption key. It's another 1 clover day which means I'm going to have to do the bats the hard way - ideally I would clover the first two sonars but I want my epic weapon to help with bedroom access. I'm also starting to think about where I'll be adventuring in my semi-rare window so that I can keep track of it for later and time hitting the Orc Chasm and Castle. This puts me somewhere between the proverbial rock and a hard place as I need spleen items as much as I need sonars so rely on +items to compensate for not running a fairy. As soon as I've got 3 tokens the Green Pixie comes out as I'd like a couple of absinthe in hand for later if possible. It then becomes a bit of a balancing act, faxing in the kge before the SR window and juggling adventure locations while advancing the game. The SR turns up in the Sleazy Back Alley (while getting a spider web for the tower) and I complete the level 4/5 quests finishing up sewer levelling to hit level 6 in time for day 3. I don't have a shield yet so was using the AA Pisces in the Skyces buff to noodle then 2-hit-kill geyser sewer monsters.

With hindsight (what a wonderful thing) I should have clovered the sonar and yellow-rayed a beanbat as I ended up raying a writing desk but I was concerned about getting the spleen drops.

Day 3 and it's spleen of steel time. I had a slight cock-up here as I realised I couldn't set the ballroom song yet as I hadn't done the stairs so I gave up on that idea after a handful of turns in the library and concentrated on the friars. I was running -10% combats thanks to smooth movements and sonata and still more or less powering these with the rogue program, pool table buff and free rest buffs. I also faxed in and arrowed and ghost (turn 106) giving me plenty time to get most the remaining white pixels. With steel spleen I then had enough turns remaining to get access to the island in time for the next semi-rare window and yellow ray a hippy as I'll need the outfit come the level 12 quest. I then had another bout of juggling semi-rare adventure locations with their window. First I used up bander runaways in the Spooky Forest while getting Hidden Temple quest adventures then got some free hipster fights in the library gaining bedroom access as well as a scroll of AFUE and my digital key from the 8-bit realm. Finally I picked up the pirate outfit but still no semi-rare adventure so rolled the remaining turns when I can hit the forest tomorrow with a fresh set of runaways.

Spot today's mistake - looks like I forgot to pick up the clover. I can blame it the viral throat infection that's currently flattened me and melted my brain cells.

Day 4 is ascii art day and levelling up as quickly as possible which means I've got to start running Ur-Kel's. I've also got to get 4 spleen drops (one extra from yesterday) and roll as many adventures as possible. After getting my Spooky Forest semi-rare I failed to set the ballroom song in time so need to put off The Cyrpt until this is done. Plan B means hitting the pirates and I get sauce synergy to work for me through a combination of sticker sword/pool buff +spell damage and as much +ML as I can muster so that they survive stream/wave long enough to geyser them. The rogue program performs well so I can switch to the he-bo and yellow ray a curmudgeonly pirate for the +ML gear. The sticker sword helps compensate for the lack of fairy and I find myself 10 myst short of equipping the fledges, not unusual except I'm a sauceror. It's very close to the third ascii turning up so I fill in the time opening and setting the ballroom song so that I can start on the Cyrpt with -15% encounters.

I've got 28 turns to roll for tomorrow plus 45 from rollover. I'm 241 substats away from level 8 and now have a conflict of interests as I will need to use my yellow ray on a miner and not the snake knight. I want the option to mine overnight to take advantage of rollover and 10 free turns of it if necessary. If snake knight shifts to the start of day 6 so that I have the +ML for stat day I need to bring forward the astronomer or lobsterfrogman. The latter seems better as I want to wrap up my day 5 turns as soon as I get 5 spleen items and have done my mining.

Have you considered switching your YR's around and YRing a snowman day 1 to pick up the pail? You don't have the ninja stars as a tower item, but it is 1 turn and decent stats day 1. It was something that was brought up somewhere else and has stuck in my mind.

I think if I needed frigid ninja stars then I might swap out the faxbot ghost and YR a snowman instead though that's the sort of thing I leave some flexibility on the final day for. I want to fit in 2 days of faxbot ghosts but also need the turns for the 2nd/3rd wandering monsters to turn up so it makes more sense to leave a single adventure tower item to the end and do a ghost day 1. They also can't hit you and give decent stat gains. I've got passive cold resistance permed so can jump into the snowmen lair at any point after it's unlocked and use a spare YR if need be.

Day 5 was short and almost sweet. The plan was to reach level 8, yellow ray a miner and start mining ore. This meant altering my faxbot plans so I brought the first round of lobsterfrogmen forward and used a romantic arrow. I was a bit paranoid about getting the jump so boosted my passive +initiative with Springy Fusilli and a yellow candy heart. I normally save mainstat divines for stat day but used a couple on the first LFM to push me closer to level 8 and just used 2xgeyser on the 2nd and 3rd. I adventured in the cranny first to further boost stat gains, alcove for a dead guy's watch and the nook for skeleton key pastables which leaves the niche + bonerdagon for stat day. The downside of spending a mere 40 turns adventuring was that I only got 4 spleen drops but they did give 30 turns of adventures. I decided not to adventure for a further drop as I got my first linoleum ore on my last free mine of the day. I'll get the other two tomorrow for free and hopefully pick up a chrome to smith into a +adv weapon. I'm at the start of the next semi-rare window so should hopefully hit it in the goatlet tomorrow. I also didn't manage to take advantage of the bander or hipster today but that's the way it goes with spleen drops. I opted for 2 tokens, swap in the sandworm for 2 agua then back to the rogue program but wasn't lucky in getting a fifth drop.

I'm about 1400 substats away from level 9 and will start with 109 adventures tomorrow. The goatlet needs to be dealt with first then I can fax/yellow ray a snake knight and return to the Cyrpt. I saved today's tea party +ML buff to the end along with the new shower +mys buff to get maximum benefit tomorrow. I'm hoping to minimise bathroom powerlevelling but expect I'll be doing some to hit level 9.

Aye, the early YR saves 3+ statless turns (as there are unskippable noncombats in the alley), which isn't bad., even if you don't need the stars. Not as good late on, though!

Day 6 and it's all systems go for stat day. I played a total of 185 turns today, comprising 109 from rollover plus 65 from air, 10 from a pixie stick and 1 twinkly wad. I started the day mining getting the 2 linoleum ore I needed for the trapzor plus a couple of chrome ore so I made a chrome weapon that will give me an extra 9 rollover turns over three days. I set the friars' +food items song at the end of yesterday in anticipation of hitting the goats first thing. As soon as I'd finished the goats (including tracking the semi-rare window) I faxed in a Snake Knight and YR'd it for the +20ML weapon gear. This also has the advantage that I can shieldbutt monsters as cheap MP way of finishing them off plus I will have a second YR to use later on.

I was still quite a bit short of hitting level 9 so went about opening the DoD first then completing the tavern quest. In oxycore I try to save the daily dungeon for days with a good combination of locked doors and/or monsters to fight. Stat gains aren't great but they are quite reasonable once you push up the ML to say 70+. The rogue program was on form giving me 4 tokens in a small number of adventures and I also netted 3 large boxes and a ring of aggravate monster. I then switched to the sandworm for the remainder of the daily dungeon as I am trying to stockpile spleen drops.

Still not level 9 so I turn my attention to the tavern quest and getting some rat tangles to help with the tomb rats later. I managed to muster +111ML for this using a combination of Detuned Radio, Ur-Kel's, Pail buff, Pumpkin Juice, Hipposkin Poncho, Snake Knight gear, Ring of Aggravate monster and equipping a BBB with balaclava. I fight three rat kings along the way and the baron 2 adv after switching off the faucet at which point I retreat to the bathroom to level up.

Orc Chasm was a bit disastrous as I failed to get a lowercase N to drop. This was annoying as I was running +item buffs and fairies all the way. I did get enough bits for a third 31337 scroll so ended up with 4 extra clovers in addition to the stat scroll. I had the obtuse angel out to romantic arrow an adding machine in order to make the last 2 scrolls but then a second machine turned up while I was chasing the elusive lowercase N so that was a waste. I then used a bunch of clovers to level up in the bathroom as I was worried that I wouldn't hit the castle in time for the next semi-rare window - normally I'd save them for later levelling but additional gains from it being a stat day helped offset the lower return and more importantly it helped get me where I needed to be later.

I should have already had an enchanted bean but cocked up the bats a bit on day 2 then divine cracker yielded a sonar - that was the RNG having a laugh. Fantasy Airship was a bit stingy with only 2 SGEEAs but relatively quick, as was the castle and I got the 3 black candles to go with my Scroll of AFUE. I started the castle 2 turns into the semi-rare window and picked up the inhaler early on so I should be able to do the nuns in ~11-12 turns, all other buffs considered.

More levelling up and level 11 was a long way away at this point. I had 1 absinthe and blew my remaining 4 clovers to hit level 11 on turn 443 which I think is a personal best for me in hardcore. Black Forest was a disappointment as I didn't get the Black No2 that I needed for the gate so will have to come back but it's a good place for stats so I'll spend some levelling turns there later. I hit the pirates first so that I can olfact a gaudy pirate and keep the well-fed slimeling out in hope of picking up a guitar but no joy. I use the second yellow ray of the day on Bob Racecar so can run out On the Trail before I need to use it again. 2 SGEEAs is a pain but manageable. As soon as I've got the stunt nuts/ketchup hound I switch my attention to the ballroom and bring out the hipster getting a couple of free combat in. Last thing to do is get the friars' +booze song in anticipation of hitting the cellar early day 7.

Day 6 is done and it mostly seemed to go really well. I'm short of a lowercase N and Black No 2. The former I may be able to zap and the latter I'll pick up en route to level 12. I still need to fax/romantic arrow a second round of lobsterfrogmen and romantic arrow astronomers. One yellow ray is reserved for a frat warrior leaving another two.

Day 7 and the daily dungeon looks favourable so I go for it. It's also better to do it today than tomorrow because I'll be trying to zap for my wand lowercase N. I only need two more barrels so delay faxing in a lobsterfrogman until towards the end of my turns and use the yellow ray on a blur for a drum machine. This gave me the advantage of a guaranteed drop and not having to olfact a blur and potentially use one of my SGEEAs when I need to olfact something else. The oasis/desert was going really well until it took 3 rounds of ultrhydrated to get the worm hooks at the end. Spleen items have been plentiful today leaving me four spare for tomorrow which is good as I'll be relying on a fairy a lot. Having finished with the lobsterfrogmen I'll turn my attention to the astronomers in the HitS tomorrow and romantic arrow one as I'm going to have to do some levelling up so may as well do it there and leave the pyramid/filthworms/gremlins for flyering. The yellow ray will be used to get a frat warrior outfit. My biggest concern is going to be hitting level 12, especially without clovers.

Day 8 and the end is in sight. I've got a bunch of levelling up to do before I get to level 12 so opt to hit the HitS with my obtuse angel so that I can romantic arrow an astronomer. As soon as I find one I switch back to finishing the Hidden City as the four wasted turns placing the spheres might as well be put to use decrementing the wandering monster counter. A couple more turns in the HitS to run out -combats then turn up the +combats for Whitey's Grove, olfacting a White Lion to ensure the other wet stunt nut stew ingredient. I then switch back to the HitS to complete getting the star items and run out the +combats before some levelling to level 12 in the bathroom. I had to use both my clovers for this so will need tomorrow's hopefully for an easy tower item. The pixie is not behaving itself today and neither are the spleen familiars. Yellow ray a frat warrior for the outfit and put on the sandworm for the gremlins. It's the best spleen familiar to use there as it doesn't accidently kill gremlins and gives some extra stats. I use a serum of sarcasm to reduce the damage to a manageable amount with myst classes. The sandworm finally behaves itself and I have 3 agua for tomorrow by the end of the gremlins. I was just about to fax in a black panther for the missing gate item only to discover it isn't on the faxbot list. Eek! Cue a pr0n in it's place and I've got my wand as zapping failed to yield a lowercase N. Filthworms and rats are going to plan, I need one more tomb ratchet and the filthworm queen is ready to roll once I can stick some UPC stickers on the sword. I've got 10k meat at the moment but am experiencing my usual suckitude at getting sauce synergy to work so will need meat for MP. This is in part because I didn't bother to open the guild store so no MMJ for me but that's a reasonable sacrifice to save 3 turns.

From what I can tell, you don't have the war hippy outfit yet- that's a decent YR target, fax in the bandit for the nuns trick, slightly better than a fax/YR of a panther. You got any turns or spleenables banked into D9? How far off L13 are you?

Rough list:

~1.2 for a ratchet, 10 for lower and Ed, 1 for filth Q, 1 for a hippy YR, 34 for battlefield, ~15-20 for nuns, ~10-15 for tower depending. That's ~70 or so adv there. Then you have some backfarming of the panther, so ~5 turns to see a panther, say another 1-2 turns as it's 20% base droprate.

You'll be cutting it tight without factoring in levelling if you've got no turns banked into D9, esp. as you're relying on the 34 battlefield adv to get you your five spleenables. Good luck!

I hadn't thought about doing the nun's trick - thanks for that. The nun's themselves should only take ~12 turns as I've got an inhaler/safue+candles/polka/hatter buff/arena buff and sticker sword plus a few other odds and sods to bump leprachaun weight. Powdered organs are more likely to be the problem item as I've yet to encounter a tomb servant.

I'll be starting the day with 49 adv from rollover + meatmaid + chrome weapon + watch + passive skill. I've already got 3 agua so can reasonably expect another couple of spleen items to drop early allowing me to switch to the BBB or hipster for additional stats. I think it's really going to come down to how many spleen adventures I can get today, if the items give me 5s or 6s I'm screwed but 7+ I should be ok. I'll play my turns this evening after work when I'll hopefully be more awake.

You'll be cutting it close, I think- good luck. Might be better to try the middle chamber instead of going for the final ratchet? That said, if you're backfarming then the queue will be useful in the upper. I'll be keeping an eye on this and hoping :)

Sorry about the delay in posting this but it's been a busy week. My attempt at a 9-dayer failed but not by much so hopefully next time. I took Draco's advice and did the nuns' trick which worked perfectly using a yellow ray for the war hippy oufit then faxing in a brigand. Everything was going really well up until trying to power level in the bathroom where I just couldn't get the non-combat adventures to turn up. This was just bad luck really as I was still running the ballroom song + sonata + smooth movements. I didn't bother switching off the song as all my lobsterfrogmen were faxed in over 2 days. Turncount was slightly inflated by my trying too long for the non-combats, I should have stopped for the day as soon as I knew I couldn't complete.

Things that could have made the run faster:
-Spleen familiars dropping items earlier - this mostly had a knock-on effect that I didn't run other familiars as much as I wanted so no polka pops (for the tomb rats), only 1 absinthe which impacted power levelling and less hipster than I would have liked.
-Forgetting to pick up the clover from the hermit one day - I'll blame this one on being ill, it's hard to think straight running on no sleep thanks to a nasty throat infection.
-Not running as much ML as I should. I should have been making perfume of prejudice right the way through the run using Inigo's for free crafting. I should probably also have been running Ur-Kel's a bit earlier.
-I could have squeezed in some more free retreats. I managed 49 over the course of the run but didn't make best use of them some days but this was in part due to lack of spleen drops.
-HCNP sauce lead in for the scarf, this is something I'm going to have to do in myst runs at least to help cut day count
