Getch's 7/1394 DitR HCNP TT

Post by Getch » Mon Nov 07, 2011 6:31 pm

Getch (#2267291)

I'm a new player. Tomorrow, when the comp starts, I'll be exactly 12 weeks old. My best run was a 7/1331 HC/Fist Sauce. To date all my runs have included daily lucre gathering, which I might drop during the competition -- haven't decided that yet.

Ideally, I'd like to beat my previous best. I don't know if I will be able to, as that run included some incredible luck like getting black pepper in one turn. Still, beating 7/1331 is what I'm after.

7 HC Skills/Olfactionless
  • Advanced Cocktailcrafting
    Pastamastery
    Advanced Saucecrafting
    Entangling Noodles
    Leash of Linguini
    Kung Fu Hustler
    Volcanometeor Showeruption (yeah, I know...)
Familiars
  • Slimeling
    Frumious Bandersnatch
    Baby Sandworm
    He-Boulder
    Squamous Gibberer *
    Stocking Mimic
    Baby Bugged Bugbear
    Rogue Program
    Mini-Hipster
    Knob Goblin Organ Grinder
    Piano Cat *
    Obtuse Angel
    Li'l Xenomorph *
    Stomping Boots
    Fancypants Scarecrow
[* Unlikely to use]

Mystic Bookshelf
  • Summon Sugar Sheets
    Summon Clip Art
    Summon Candy Heart
    Summon Party Favor
    Summon Love Song
    Summon BRICKOs
    Summon Dice
    Summon Alice's Army Cards
Other IotM
  • Clan VIP key
    Pumpkins
    Pen-Pal Kit
Before you ask, yes, I have a lot of Mr. Shinies. I'm a fiscally irresponsible magpie with a credit card. All my dollars are belong to Jick...

Pre-Run Strategy

I'll be doing this run as a TT, with an eye to perming Sympathy. Given that I won't have shield butt until level 10, it is my intention to go weaponless until at least then. Toss will be the only auto-hit skill available to me, so I won't be able to crank the ML much at the beginning. I think the damage bonuses from Kung-Fu should play nicely with chained knee-butts, as long as I can actually hit and can manage the MP. In addition to the inherants from Kung Fu, I'll also be using a halo almost constantly. For my Astral pet, I plan to take the trousers. For my Astral consumable, I plan to take the pilsners and attempt to hold them until level 11 for max turngen.

Planned Tome usage
Day 1 -- Shining Halo, Time Halo, Bucket of Wine.
Day 2 -- Frosty Halo, (Furry Halo or Familiar Jacks), Bucket of Wine.

Planned Food & Drink
Day 1 -- Organ grinder pies, AC tavern swill. Pumpkins & wizard voucher as needed.
Day 2+ -- Reagent pasta, badass pies from every boss. AC drinks. Pumpkins & wizard voucher as needed.

Planned Fax, YR, & Angel
Day 1 -- Fax & YR sleepy mariachi (after getting a few fingercuffs) Not sure what to arrow.
Day 2 -- Fax & arrow ghost. YR Business Hippy

Goals
Day 1 -- Tavern. Open Beach as early as feasible. Get to level 6. Get as close to liver as possible.
Day 2 -- Finish liver. Get access to hippy stand.

BTW, despite Volcanometeor Showeruption being a viable method for dealing with her naughtiness, doing that requires 100+ combat turns of using pottery barn owl, which means not using a familiar for stats or items or spleen or runaways or extra combats, etc. Last run i tried to use it with nothing to show for it. This time I expect not to try -- her naughtiness will have to find some other way to die.

Feedback would be greatly appreciated!

On day 1 arrowing a bricko bat isn't the absolute worst if you have nothing else.

Why would you YR a business hippy? If you have opened the island (and your plan is to open it on day 1), just YR any of the regular hippies. There is no reason to open the road to the white citadel at all, plus most of the hippies on the island give a drum.

Thanks for the help, Effovex!

Bricko bats sound great as a first day arrow. Yay free combats!

I wasn't thinking. I am used to doing the white citadel quest for god knows what nooby reason. Of course, if what I need is the hippy outfit to hit the fruit stand, YR an island hippy makes much more sense.

I ascended. Will play turn 1 under mafia logging tonight. Per advice in chat, I went gnoll/muscle for the moonsign. I also rethought the consumable, too. I took the hotdogs in case I need quick stats.

You may want to think about an ooze instead. I can imagine having trouble with a BRICKO bat on day one, since you don't have a combat suite permed yet.

Well, the first bricko bat is easy because you can't lose the first fight (angel makes combat trivial), so the question is, by the time the second bat comes around, can you beat it? If you time it right I think it's reasonable.

I agree w/bleary. Running no ML, bricko bat has attack of 70 and Defense of 63 w/100 HP. At Level 6, your mainstat is ~30 (unbuffed). That 3 (mainstat) love songs, or 2 if you can get 2 mainstat love songs and buff your mainstat >50.

Oozes are ML 40, w/50HP. Much more manageable.

Days 1-3 done.

Did you know that if you actually ascend outside of Mafia, it doesn't record the ascension in a way that the log analyser picks up? And that you then have to forge the header? And that this is more fun if you don't have a good one to copy from? I know this now!

Overall things are going OK, I guess. Definitely not awesome. It feels slower than my last run.

The biggest issue remains combat. Entangling noodles synergized so well with fist skills, that I really got spoiled. I was running +30 ML a lot last run. Now, however, I actually can miss. The +damage from the Kung Fu intrinsics helps a lot, but the +hit from Master of the Surprising Fist would be so helpful. If the Defense is too high, my only option is to extend noodles with blocking and pick away with Toss. I'm still going unarmed, and now have all the halos to pick from.

On to the actual run. My first order of business was getting my scarecrow some spangly pants. To do that, I wanted fingertraps for safety. I also planned to do a bit of sewer leveling, for which I wanted more fingertraps, a bit of weight on my hipster, and Amphibian Sympathy (the level 3 skill).
===Day 1===

[0] Ascension Start [0,0,0]
-> Turn [0] none
[1-11] Outskirts of The Knob [18,6,10]
+> [1] Got Game Grid token, chef's hat, shining halo
That stupid Chef's hat was my only MP regen for most of day 1. 1 MP / adventure sucks!
+> [7] Got Knob Goblin firecracker
+> [10] Got Knob Goblin encryption key
+> [11] Got Game Grid token
-> Turn [3] Mini-Hipster
-> Turn [7] Rogue Program
-> Turn [11] Pair of Stomping Boots
Getting paste
=> Level 2 (Turn 11)! (5/3/3)
[12-30] Spooky Forest [40,14,10]
+> [12] Got shard of double-ice, shard of double-ice, shard of double-ice
Hooray for double-ice. I'm in love with the stuff. On Day 2, I get a cap!
+> [19] Got mosquito larva
+> [28] Got spooky sapling
=> Level 3 (Turn 26)! (8/4/4)
[31-39] Tavern Cellar [27,12,21]
+> [32] Got bottle of tequila, bottle of tequila, bottle of tequila
+> [39] Got Typical Tavern swill, Typical Tavern swill, Typical Tavern swill, time halo
o> Drank 2 pumpkin beer (11 adventures gained) [36,28,24]

[40] Spooky Forest [5,0,3]
-> Turn [40] He-Boulder
[41] photocopied monster [21,12,13]
}> [41] Disintegrated sleepy mariachi
Spangly pants acquired without fuss.
-> Turn [41] Mini-Hipster
[42-46] Spooky Forest [16,3,6]
+> [43] Got Spooky-Gro fertilizer
+> [45] Got Spooky Temple map, magical ice cubes
=> Level 4 (Turn 46)! (13/8/9)
Although I have 3 swills to mix, it takes 10 long turns of regen to summon a garnish. Uggh.
[47] Mix 1 magical ice cubes + 1 Typical Tavern swill [0,0,0]
o> Drank 1 blended frozen swill (12 adventures gained) [3,2,28]
[48-53] Bat Hole Entryway [32,23,13]
+> [51] Got Pine-Fresh air freshener

o> Drank 1 blended frozen swill (13 adventures gained) [2,3,26]
[60-62] Batrat and Ratbat Burrow [20,6,9]
o> Used 1 beastly paste (10 adventures gained) [24,20,22]
[63-70] A Maze of Sewer Tunnels [293,140,164]
+> [67] Got magical ice cubes
My very first sewer leveling ever. W00t! Blew all three pool buffs at once on this, which boosted init, damage, and gave sufficient MP regen to use noodles. The reset of day 1 I could not afford to use noodles.
=> Level 5 (Turn 66)! (20/14/16)
[71-74] Haunted Pantry [22,11,9]
+> [71] Got razor-sharp can lid
#> [74] Semirare: The Pilsbury Doughjerk
o> Ate 3 tasty tart (16 adventures gained) [20,16,17]

Omm nom badass pie!
-> Turn [87] Knob Goblin Organ Grinder
[93-97] Cobb's Knob Harem [37,19,20]
+> [94] Got Knob Goblin perfume
+> [96] Got Knob Goblin harem pants, Knob Goblin harem veil
-> Turn [95] Pair of Stomping Boots
-> Turn [97] Knob Goblin Organ Grinder
[98] Throne Room [35,25,21]
+> [98] Got Cape of the Goblin King
=> Level 6 (Turn 98)! (29/21/23)
About here day 1 goes to hell. In my previous runs, I day 1 food has been whatever my organ grinder manages to make. This run, I bet that I could eat hell ramen on day 1. This was a gigantic mistake! No way were those Hellions going to cooperate, especially without the MP to use Entangling Noodles.

After blowing through my free (hot tub) and cheap (medicinal herbs) healing, further healing became very expensive. I have no healing skill. I got tired, frustrated, and sloppy. If I had half a brain, I would have banked my turns for the next day when I would make my Ice Cap and my healing and pool buff options would return.

Do I do this? Hell no. Watch me stumble around trying to get the mimic to heal me (lazy beast) and burning of beaten-up by going on vacations.
[99-109] Dark Neck of the Woods [65,28,35]
+> [99] Got wussiness potion

[111] Dark Neck of the Woods [13,4,7]
+> [111] Got empty meat tank, tires
[112-114] Muscle Vacation [12,0,0]
-> Turn [114] Stocking Mimic
[115-119] Haunted Billiards Room [32,16,12]
+> [115] Got pool cue
[120] Dark Neck of the Woods [0,0,0]
+> [120] Got dodecagram
[121] Dark Heart of the Woods [0,0,0]
[122-124] Haunted Billiards Room [14,9,7]
[125] Haunted Library [0,0,0]
[126-128] Mysticality Vacation [0,15,0]
I did end up arrowing a BRICKO ooze. No way could I have handled a bat! Terrible luck on BRICKO summons though -- only one eye block in the lot. Still, I did arrow it.
+> [128] Got BRICKO ooze
-> Turn [128] Obtuse Angel
[129] BRICKO ooze [0,0,0]
+> [129] Got magical ice cubes, magical ice cubes, magical ice cubes

+> [157] Got shard of double-ice
o> Drank 1 bucket of wine (16 adventures gained) [49,42,47]
o> Ate 2 plain pizza (6 adventures gained) [0,0,0]
Plain pizza! I had dry noodles. I had a tomato. I did not have a brain. I was that tired.
-> Turn [145] Baby Sandworm
-> Turn [150] Stocking Mimic
-> Turn [157] Mini-Hipster
Thank goodness that was over. I did accomplish what I had hoped to, except for the Hell Ramen bit. The island was open and Hey Deze mine for the taking.

Do you use your he-boulder's red ray? On day 1 it is especially awesome, but even later on it's good. With a few weight buffs and a sugar shield it's basically a single turn of 500-900 pounds of volleyball.

I notice you're eating a few non-badass pies, meaning you're spending a lot of time with your organ grinder, yet somehow you're also strapped for cash. What are you buying? Healing, MP? Consider running your mimic more (probably every time you're running your grinder for something other than a badass pie, really), as it can give a ton of HP/MP, meat, and delicious candies that are super useful later on.

(Rollover ends, /me logs on...)

And wow, you won't be struggling for food for the rest of the run O_O

I don't know if you know this, or if it's worth doing, but the chefs in the Knob Kitchens drop knob mushrooms/sausages at 15%, both of which can be used to make reagent pastas. You can also clover for a grab-bag, which has a chance of giving you knob sausages and mushrooms.

No. I've never done that. Sounds good, and I'll start.

The excess pies mostly came from running it in the crypt. I was trying to pre-load parts for the next boss, and ended up with a couple dead lights.

I've mostly using meat for guild skills, to try to ease combat. I did end up buying a mushroom plot to avoid wasting more turns farming reagent ingredients.

If you were thinking about the ridiculous consumables, I got drinks, not food. With that mushroom plot though, I'm covered.

I did end day 1 hoping for such a drop. I should have used a clover. Thanks for the reminder.

Talking with JT last night, she expressed surprise that I didn't use my Slimeling if I was hurting for MP. Duh! In retrospect, I wish I had blown Familiar Jacks on my Rogue Program on day 1. I did that early day 4, playing a bit after roll. It's doing a great job of both funding my growing collection of buffs (leash, ghostly shell, tenacity, and soon empathy) while also extending noodles. It gives no +item or +stat, of course, but it does give GG tokens.

I didn't really consider it for extended use because I'm so accustomed to boots, grinder, and hipster being my top familiars, for turn-saving & turn-gen. Stupid narrow-minded noobish thinking.

On a somewhat unrelated note, I fulfilled the day 3 bounty early day 4, and the day 4 bounty is mechas, which I will probably fulfill day 5. I had been debating giving up lucre collecting for the purposes of this contest, but this run is already non-competitive. Unless there is a compelling reason not to, I'll simply do the best lucrecore I can. Best of luck to those who have a shot of winning!

Also, thinking ahead a couple levels, should I switch from toss to shieldbutt as my primary attack skill at level 10 when it becomes available? Toss does pretty low damage. and I have a hard time seeing how it will hold up through the war. I'd lose the kung-fu +init & +item intrinsics plus the use of halos. A big difference between what I'm doing and what Tiny Plastic Brain Stem can do stems from the fact he has Master permed for +20 to hit.

Yeah I don't have a slimeling myself, but it would have saved me plenty of grief last night. I like to use the rogue program to starfish (when I remember), and get the tokens to use on finger cuffs and little parachute guys. I'm tending towards 1 parachute guy per token this run, as it's easy enough to use the first time I finger cuff. Might not be as useful if you don't have funkslinging, but it's an option.

I've gotta say I'm surprised you were sewer leveling so early, unarmed, with no combat skills perm'd. Rather I'm surprised you were successful. How were you killing them? Honestly, I really want to know since I didn't think I had the skills to sewer level myself. Ah, just noticed your comment about using toss. That explains much!

Once you hit level 10 it's going to become much harder to survive long enough to kill monsters with toss. You can do it, but you'll either take tons of damage or quickly use up all your finger cuffs (as I did day 1). Shieldbutt is a good option, and you can get away with using the hilarious comedy prop in your main hand for extra healing. You do lose that big initiative/item boost though.

I've used a couple parachute guys too this run.

Noodles + fingercuffs + hipster. Toss did a wee bit of damage too.

Overall, day 4 went very nicely. Collected two bounties. Filled in all the missing guild skills. Ate well, drank ridiculously better.
Would have finished Hole in the Sky except rollover was looming, so I banked almost 60 turns.

Not shown here is my final summons of three cold filtered water. No time to log it with mafia -- got them right under the wire. They will come in handy with the upcoming bosses.

I'm level 10 now, and have shieldbutt, but no shield. Time to make busy taming turtles!

Day 5 goal is spiked turtle gear and as far through the level 11 quests as possible.

This is starting to feel like 7 or 8 days. Today went about as well as expected. I probably spent a little too much time taing turtles. Also forgot to use the angel or he-bo.

Because I forgot to arrow it, I only got one gunpowder. This isn't the end of the world -- with a fax & arrow tomorrow, I'll have all five gunpowders. Tomorrow's YR will be a war outfit.

My big decision coming up is which side of the war to take. I'll have Sonofabeach pre-done. I plan to flyer Cyrus in 7 turns and a clover.

I really want to skip gremlins, as they could easily tear through more reagents than I have. No sauciness means only 5 turns/reagent and low moxie with no defensive perms means stacking multiple buffs. Uggh.

I have a scarecrow with mariachi pants plus polka pops for the orchard. Both BRICKO and double-ice pants for nuns, along with a couple inhalers. Dooks shouldn't be a problem.

So, frat boy or hippy and why?

The gremlins quest is a pain with few skills. My strategy has been to turn off all ML, crank muscle/moxie up with cheap buffs (ben-gals, hair spray, airship/castle buffs) then go in without a helmet other than the double ice cap. You don't want to stun them because then you won't get the item to show up. I figure if I'm taking damage as low as 9 to 15 I'm doing good, sometimes 19 is acceptable if I have enough health to last 15 rounds. A recent tip I got was to use a banisher like crystal skull on the AMC gremlin. I use the spectre sceptor from the hidden city boss to delay each turn.

As for which side to take, both have their merits. Fighting as a Frat is a bit faster because you spend fewer turns dedicated to the arena (assuming 0 added turns if you flyer for other quests), where as a hippy you would probably have most of those side quests done before reaching the arena. Honestly I'd suggest doing the war as a Hippy simply because you can make pies from the orchard. The dooks quest isn't too bad if you use the chaos butterfly trick, and by the time you unlock the gremlins you can have a decent supply of healing items so recovering between fights shouldn't be too bad.

No path is quite an adjustment after nothing but fist runs. I think it's given some people bad habits towards normal runs, myself included.

7 days is looking quite realistic. War is started, Hippy side. Orchard & nuns are done. Started dooks, just barely. Gunpowder is collected, and 7-turn flyering is ready.

Re: Getch's DitR HCNP TT (in run, please comment)

Sounds like things are coming along nicely, Getch. And yay for getting lucre! I wouldn't write off getting a mushroom patch next run. It gives you all the reagent pasta you want for zero turns. Since you're looking at 7-ish day runs, you're going to need a good bit of food. I know the 5k is a lot and that you need to buy skills in-run, so I'm not saying that you should buy one, but you should certainly consider it.

As far as the slimeling goes--My slimeling was my most-used familiar for my last 53 runs or something. I'm obviously partial to the little guy. He can pump out a huge amount of MP, but on day 1, he's light and you don't have much to feed him. (remember that you can feed him meatstack-based armor and get slime stacks out of him)

MP is by far my biggest issue on day 1, so I feel your pain. I get what I can out of my slimeling, starfish with my rogue program, use little parachute guys, use the MP-restoring pool buff, make tonic water if I can, take a couple of disco naps, buy knob goblin seltzer, and whine. Wisdom of the Elder Tortoises does make things easier.

Did you have terrible luck getting a g-string or something?

One or two of the bounties were there, I think. Of the 7 days, I skipped day 1 & 2 bounties and did the rest for lucre.

I would recommend not taking bounties in-run during a speed attempt, unless they can be completed while doing other objectives (e.g. airship if you can run +21 ML).

However, even during lucrecore, I would recommend never doing a bounty south of the border. It's one of the swingiest bounty (50% NC, 5 different monsters) in a really bad zone.

Personally, when I was doing lucrecore my selection process was:

1) Is it an airship, giant castle or hole in the sky bounty on a day when I'll need to adventure there anyway?
2) Is it an airship, giant castle or hole in the sky bounty and I expect to spend turns there tomorrow? (especially relevant now that you can turn yesterday's bounty and still do today's)
3) will I be spending a good amount of turns in that zone anyway?
4) is there an ultra-rare there? (Mise!)

Nothing wrong with getting lucre in run, but also nothing wrong with letting loose every now and then and doing a run without lucre-ing.
