Starfawkes' HCNP TT Mongoose finished 8 day 1569 turns

Post by Starfawkes » Sun Nov 04, 2012 3:29 am

IOTM: Fairy worn boots, small medium, peppermint patch, tome of clip art, and clan VIP pass.

Permed skills: Phat Loot Lyric

Astral items: Trousers and hot dogs

Goals: I've never attempted a hardcore run before, so I'm not sure what to aim for. So, I guess my goal will be to finish the run before the contest is over.

Day 1

Diet plan

I plan to use my fairy boots to get spleen item.

For booze I will use my small medium and one of my peppermint sprouts, if that's not enough I'll probably drink the tavern swill, and a bucket of wine as my nightcap.

For food I will use two of my peppermint sprouts. I'm going to look into semi rares more, maybe I can get tasty tarts. I might use an astral hot dog, but I'm going to try to save that for later. I'll probably eat one or two ultrafondues, depending on if I can think of something else I might need from the tome. I may end up eating a fortune cookie or two also.

Questions

Did I choose the best moon sign?

Should I use my third peppermint sprout in a drink, or should I save it to make 2 patties tomorrow?

What are some other good food options if I'm unable to get full in the first couple days?

Was it worth it to use the clan shower to get the double ice hat? I've been told it's the best use, but I'm not sure I'll be using a lot of mp.

What is a good day one fax?

I start off by using the vip claw machine, diving for treasure in the pool and using the shower to get ice shards. I get the letter from toot and sell the gems. I put on my clothes and equip my small medium.

Notes: I think I had a surprisingly good day one. I think I used all my resources really well, and there's not really anything I regret doing. I learned not to use ultra fondue unless I'm sure I can handle the monster level. I forgot to use a clover to get sonars, I could have saved 20 turns.

level 10 happy medium
level 5 stomping boot

Day 2

Goals: Tomorrows main goal is to get liver of steal. Finish the knob quest, the bat quest and the friar quest. Get what I need from the 8-bit realm. Unlock the island. Kill ratsworth. This all might be a bit ambitious though.

Diet plan

Eat 2 peppermint patties, a cheeseburger or 2, 3 tarts, maybe fortune cookies, maybe an astral hot dog. If that's not enough I have 2 enchanted bean burritos

Drink 7 small medium drinks, steel margarita and bucket of wine for night cap.

Use 3 beastly pastes.

Questions

What should I use the potions from the mirror for?

Should I use my tome of clip art to get a time halo?

Start the day out by getting my double ice cap, which I can't use until I gain one more moxie.

Eat 2 peppermint patties

Do submarine sprints

(15) hidden temple

(18) hidden temple
3 more muscle noncombats

(5) haunted library
unlock conservatory
unlock second floor

(6) haunted conservatory

drink bucket of wine

fax in ascii art and actually defeated it

used the pool table 3 times for +item drops, I probably should have done this earlier.

Notes: I'm not as happy with today as I was with day 1. I made a few mistakes, like forgetting to change pants and use buffs at the right time. Over all I did okay. I wasn't able to get liver of steel on day two, but I guess day 3 isn't too bad.

stomping boots 6 pounds
small medium 15 pounds

Day 3

Goals: I want to kill ratsworth right away. I think I wasn't able to before because I wasn't wearing the right pants. Them finish the last part of the friar quest and get liver of steel. Hopefully finish the crypt and the trapper quest. Get the pirate fledges and hippy costume, and hopefully reach level 10. I know I'm setting some ambitious goals.

Diet Plan

I'm pretty much going to keep my diet the same. I might replace some of the clip art food so I can get an unbearable light.

Questions

What is good thing to fax? I was thinking adding machine, butt I'm going to have to go to the valley anyways to get a lowercase n. Maybe dairy goat. I could try a gaudy pirate, but I'm not sure I could beat it.

Should I be leveling in the gallery instead of the hidden temple?

Should I prep the mirrors for flyers? Or should I use Ed? I think I should probably spend some time in the haunted bathroom any ways to get the towel cape, and it has good non-combats.

Eat peppermint patty

use 2 beast paste

(10) dark elbow of the woods

(8) hippy camp

4 reoderant

use 2 wind up clocks]
eat 2 glowing fungus

eat spooky shroom kabob

I forgot to get the grue egg before I ate the fungus, that would have been way better

Use clip tome for 2 buckets of wine and an unbearable light

drink bucket of wine

Notes: Not a terrible day. Biggest mistake was eating fungus instead of a grue egg omelette. I also should have used my tome to summon something other than a second bucket of wine. Maybe the time halo thing.

9 pound stomping boots
18 pound medium

ended up faxing a dairy goat.

Day 4

Goals: Finish the crypt and trapper quests, or at least get to bosses. Get fledges. Unlock Gallery and ballroom.

Diet Plan

3 demonic paste for spleen

I'll drink mostly small medium drinks, but I'll probably have to drink something else too, now that I have liver. Bucket of wine as night cap.

I'll eat a grue egg omelet, 2 peppermint patties, probably a fortune cookie, 3 tasty cakes, and maybe an astral hot dog.

Questions

Is there a strategy to where to dig in the mine? Like how some parts of the barrel full of barrels give certain thing.

Is it worth sacrificing drinks from the medium to use a +stats familiar? Or should I start leveling a leprecaun for the side quest on the island? Or should I be leveling other familiars for the NS?

eat 2 peppermint patties
eat grue egg omlete
use 3 demonic paste
drink 2 jackhammer
drink Transylvania sling

(9) defiled nook

eat cheezburger
drink fuzzy tentacle
drink over priced beer
drink bucket of wine

get rest of buffs

summon a time halo
summon a bucket of wine for tomorrow

Notes: Decided to end today early, 63 turns left. I ran out of hot tub heals and my spleen was too full for herbs. Also, if I'm going to try adventuring in the haunted bathroom or gallery, I'll be better off with the +non combats buff. Today went pretty well. Achieved most of my goals, and finished the orc chasm quest. I really need to spend some time leveling, so hopefully I'll be strong enough to survive in the Gallery soon. Next time I really need to be more careful about getting teleportitis.

20 pound medium
10 pound stomping boots

Day 5

Goals: Spend some time in the gallery leveling. Unlock ballroom. Get fledges. defeat boss from trapper quest. Finish level 10 quest. Reach level 11.

(2) poop deck

ending early again today
fax in gaudy pirate
drink bucket of wine
use remaining buffs
equip time stuff

Notes: I leveled a lot today, but I'm still having trouble not getting beat up. Like, I take 40 damage every fight. I don't know if I should level more tomorrow. Still I feel like this was a really good day, I leveled more than I thought I would, even though I didn't actually finish the level 10 quest, I got pretty far with it. I'm thinking an 8 day run might be possible.

Day 6

Goals: Finish the level 10 quest, get close to finished with level 11 quest, maybe start the war. If i can survive in te hole in the sky, spend some time there.

(28) haunted gallery
level 13

drink jackhammer
drink more humantini than humantini
eat 1 glowing fungus
drink 1 bucket of wine

Note: I was just short of getting my second semi rare today, at least I'll have 2 tomorrow. Almost finished level 11 quest. I'm just having a lot of trouble not taking a ton of damage. Maybe my moxie isn't high enough. I accomplished most of my goals, so that's good.

Day 7

Goals: Finish level 11 quest. Get at least half way through the war.

Diet plan

Drink mostly medium drinks, a knob coffee and any jello shots or wine i get from the war.

Eat 1 peppermint patty, hopefully about 6 tasty tarts, a fortune cookie and maybe war food, maybe summoned food.

get winkered and dances with tweedles for tomorrow. I also have a hobo monkey.

Notes: I'm really surprised by how well things went today. I actually acheived my goals of finishing the level 11 quest and getting half way through the war. I also got all the whole in the sky stuff and got a lot of stats. Today was really good, and I think I might be able to finish tomorrow. Maybe, if the tower isn't that bad.

Medium 20 pounds
boots 11 pounds

Day 8

Goals: I should definitely finish the war and hopefully finish the ascension.

Diet plan

Eat 2 peppermint patties, 3 tasty tarts and the rest war food.

drink medium drinks, maybe war booze and I have 2 knob coffee.

use pastes, but I'm going to try to be more strategic about when i use them.

Questions

Is it worth it to do the nuns quest? Will it save me 40 turns? Also, I was using my monkey, so I'm behind on medium drinks.

Some food that can be easily acquired on day 1 is rat kabobs (cook rat appendix [from tavern] with skewer [from knoll bakery]) 2 fullness each. Also, enchanted bean burritos. Cook an enchanted bean with a flat dough (buy from gnoll bakery). Make sure you keep 1 enchanted bean fluid for the level 10 quest!

As a general rule you want to pick whatever degrassi sign applies to your mainstat (in basically any path), so it looks like you're set.

Looks like you had a pretty good day 1 - but yeah, I'd stay away from the ultrafondue.

Double-ice hat is really quite worthwhile.

This may be a bit too dick-stabby, but you can avoid the 8-bit entirely by Turtle Taming.

http://kol.coldfront.net/thekolwiki/ind ... tle_Taming

Basically, what you do is you use turtle pheromones, adventure in a zone without a turtle to tame (or use PVP to decrement the counter) and then when there is one turn left you adventure in the 8-bit, which will give you a blue shell that gives 1-3 white pixels and doesn't take a turn. Rinse, repeat ~15 times. It's easier to do later on in the ascension, when you have more meat and the turtles require a rod or turtle familiar to tame.

Don't forget to use a cheap wind-up clock to find more modern zombies.

What should I use the potions from the mirror for?
the +50 HP is really nice for early survivability, especially if you're low skill.

Should I use my tome of clip art to get a time halo?
At longer daycounts? Definitely. At this point, you're going into day 8, so that's 7 rollovers. 7x5-holy crap! 35 turngen from one summons!

When you're daycounts go down and you get more experience and skills, you'll be able to assess whehter you need that turngen to make turncount or whether the summon would be better used elsewhere. For now, it's a slam-dunk. Get it day 1.

Feeling a bit stuck right now. Not sure what to do.
the answer to this is always "ask in /clan." I don't know that I've seen you in chat yet. Come on over and ask us. That's what we're here for.

just noticed I haven't been wearing my astral trousers since I fought the knob king, that explains why I was getting beaten up so much.
Get yourself into the habit of checking your equipment page regularly. Just type /go equip. We all still end up making those types of mistakes anyway, but keeping an eye on it will reduce that.

Should I be leveling in the gallery instead of the hidden temple?
Yes.

Should I prep the mirrors for flyers? Or should I use Ed? I think I should probably spend some time in the haunted bathroom any ways to get the towel cape, and it has good non-combats.See my post in JeffV's thread on the GMoB. Right now it's probably a good idea for you to set him up. Later, not so much.

I didn't think about my semi rare when I got teleportitis, but luckily it took me to the outskirts of the knob and I got a lunch box
Ha ha! You got so lucky!

I think I'll flyer ed instead of guy made of bees
Wait, you know you'll need to flyer a lot more mosters than ed, right?

(13) haunted bedroom
unlock ballroom

Consider doing this earlier and setting the ballroom song for +NC

I leveled a lot today, but I'm still having trouble not getting beat up. Like, I take 40 damage every fight. I don't know if I should level more tomorrow. Still I feel like this was a really good day, I leveled more than I thought I would, even though I didn't actually finish the level 10 quest, I got pretty far with it. I'm thinking an 8 day run might be possible.
Are you using ben-gal? What gear are you using. You shouldn't really be having quite this much trouble. I often find that with better gear, people find things a lot easier. Remember that more power does not necessarily equal better gear. Look for things like +DA bonuses and +weapon damage and such.

Are you making turtle gear? You should. It's one of the biggest advantages of being a TT, and you don't need armorcraftiness for a lot of it. Catch me in chat and let me know what you've been doing and I'll give you some suggestions.

The run is looking good so far. It's very hard to be so very low-skilled, especially as a TT. Good luck with the rest.

ETA: As to your last comment--ask in /clan. You'll get instant advice.

Thanks, your post is very helpful. I haven't been making any turtle tamer gear, I'm not really sure what to make. I guess I should start asking in chat. Some times when I'm on it doesn't look like anyone else is. I'm usually on pretty late for most people, since I live in Hawaii. I didn't know you had to flyer ed and other monsters, I heard that people used him, and assumed it was the same as the guy made of bees. I will probably do the bathroom then. I think most of my equipment is okay, I could just really use a better shield. I've been wearing + item drop accessories all the time pretty much, so that might be a problem too.

Thanks again, that was all really helpful.

Also, I figured turtle tamers would be a good starter class. Would it be easier to go disco bandit? In my experience with DB's they were more difficult to play.

It really comes down to a fundamental difference in playstyle - either could be easier or harder for you. Personally, I found the moxie classes far easier to play than the couple of turtle tamer runs I've done. On average, low-skill players tend to find moxie classes easier because of their survivability. It's usually trivial to get to safe moxie and plink the monsters to death while hardly ever taking damage. There are also many, many very useful skills in both DB and AT. That said, any class really is doable if you're playing to its strengths. Good luck with your last day!

I guess I just have a little bit of favoritism to muscle classes, since I started out as a seal clubber. I've only done one AT run, and I know I have to do more, but I am not looking forward to it. They just seem so fragile to me, even more so than the myst classes. I guess it does depend on how you play, my wife insists that DB are the best, but that's what she started out as.
