Kal 3/752 HC Ed, 6 Skill (tips?)

Hey, so I'm relatively new to speed ascension, & my best run prior to Ed was 5/880 or so with no IOTM on a multi, so I was hoping to hit 3 days with Ed. I'm pretty excited to have done so, but I'd like to be able to bring it down even further and possibly make it onto the leaderboard (ideally, also without shelling out for Conspiracy Island). I feel like my biggest challenge with Ed is going quickly while still leveling enough--while I managed to do without too much leveling this time around, once I'm able to cut more turns I can see it becoming a bigger problem, and it was a struggle to level even this quickly. I'm also wondering if there's a better way to handle the day-1 grind without having Conspiracy Island.

Basically I'd like some pointers on... well, anything, but hopefully "leveling is hard" and "i feel like i'm wasting my turns day 1" gives something to go on.

Started by taking Fist of the Mummy, then took all invocations except Blessing. After that I went evocations with a slight detour to take Blessing before Wrath.
I ran Seshat and Heka for pretty much the entire run, Serqet almost as much, and Purr once I got it. Everything else was as I needed it.

As far as minions, I took Priest first for farming day 1 (possibly also day 2? I'm not sure), and used Scribe for virtually all the remainder of the run.

Farmed in the Barrr with +ML plant once I was able to equip the outfit. Lash for goat cheese (was a bit unlucky), Friar's quest so I could finish the Barrr, and Billiards SR because I awkwardly had nothing else to grab. I bought all the elemental wards before doing the Kitchen.

Didn't get my hot wing drops so I had to spend the rest of my adventures for the day finishing that. Chateau rests at the end of the day.

This was a mistake--I wanted the buff for the Twin Peak NC, but I didn't realize that it prevented me from eating my AHD for the day.

Otherwise, just quests. Lash for logging camp (+using 1 clover), wards make Twin Peak stench test trivial, +ML plant for Oil Peak (had to spend 1 extra adv to get the jar even with a syringe), Talismans for F'c'le. Choker + Shed anywhere I wanted NC. Also, still prioritizing quests in Ka-giving locations.

I wasted talismans getting the Amulet and Mohawk wig--the amulet helped, but I wasn't able to equip the wig. I planted the +ML plant on the ground floor and spent some extra turns there as I believe I still needed some Ka. Dropped all 3 stone wool from Baa. Had both leg upgrades for Alcove, and I wasn't going to get olfaction so I just got the Niche out of the way here. Chateau rests here as well.

Talisman for blackbird drops, and yellow ray for blackberries. I kept going back to the bedroom because I didn't have the camera. I used talismans to get the rest of my A-Boo clues. At this point I realized 3 days was still possible, so I tried to pick which quests to start at the end of this day based on plants and flyers, both of which turned out to be a waste as I overestimated how long flyering would take and I just severely messed up my plants day 3.

The plan was to use talismans + Blessing + the +item friar plant to nearly cap whatever evil eyes I couldn't lash. I ended up pretty lucky with my Lashes and had 3 Talismans remaining. Also I have no idea how I finished the Nook in 7 turns... I don't think that should be possible?

I made a huge mistake in the Palindome--I planted the +ML plant thinking that it was an indoor location, when I had hoped to use the outdoor +ML on the Battlefield.

Relocated janitors, fought one on the final turn, and Lashed a book of matches. Not much to say for apartment/office. Took me 5 turns to find a surgeon but got the NC the very next turn in the Hospital. For bowling, I used cyclops eyedrops (from Chateau) and Blessing to cap drops, extended my eyedrops with stone wool, and finished in 10 turns anyway. So I spent my 3 remaining turns of it in the Spookyraven basement. Used a talisman on a wine rack and got the Vinegar in one turn amazingly, so I spent the rest in the laundry room, using one more talisman I believe. I used my Chateau rests after finishing the Hidden City.

Already had the hippy outfit from earlier, then YR for the frat war outfit. Started the war reasonably quickly. Afterward I spent 1 Ka per fight to flyer each monster 4 times, so I finished flyering between Beach and Junkyard, despite having saved some of the Spookyraven quests to do flyering. I guess it didn't really make a difference since I didn't use any turns leveling to 12.

Beach was fine. Junkyard was fairly slow. I do A-Boo here (in this case, after I finished flyers) so I can spread some of my muscle buffs between it and the Junkyard, so I can sponge more gremlin hits. Wards help a lot for A-Boo of course, and I also had arms at this point. I grab more eyedrops to help finish the laundry room with my SR, then optimal dog + tart to maximize turngen.

For laundry room I had eyedrops + pressurized potion of perception from Chateau (which I forgot I had until day 3 >_>), and Blessing--may have also had one Talisman left. +ML plant for boiler room, where the 2nd boiler took its time showing up. After that, just the rest of the war. I still needed to level so I used my 2 clovers for the day in the bathroom and afterward got 4 NCs in 5 adventures. Lash for warehouse drops, and that's it.
Some of this stuff is messed up (which I think I've noted in most places) because i forgot to make this until after I'd played my aftercore turns for the day >_>

Nice run! The vast majority of your decisions make sense to me, but here are a few things I noticed:
  • You farmed a ton of ka (~120 turns worth on day 1, ~10-15 turns that I noticed on day 2). I've been told that doing this is a net positive on turngen, but I imagine you could still finish in 3 days with much less (say, ~180 farmed ka total (~60 turns of farming)). You might want to consider only getting 30 spleen on day 1, or something like that.
  • You can finish a 7 turn nook these days thanks to lovebugs.
  • Astral bracer seems unnecessary. Even if you can't wear the belt immediately, it almost certainly saves more turns than the 6 turns generated by the bracer.
I'm not really sure what CI-less HCEd does for stats, to be honest. I can't think of anything that'd be better than just chateauing ~level 9 (which can lead to offstat issues) and the SBB diner for getting to 13 if necessary, but other people here probably know more than I do about it.

Yeah I definitely don't need so much farming from a Ka perspective since I finished with a good amount of advs remaining, so putting off the spleen makes sense--eventually I'll probably plan it out more rigorously. And the reasoning behind not taking the belt was, well, not having the belt, but I'm doing a quick run before my next attempt to unlock it. I don't have SBB either but it's cheap and I may pick it up soon, especially if I take a look and it looks potentially useful. Anyway thanks for the feedback.

Awesome run, Kale! Yojimbo is smart & fast, so I'll leave the help I can't give.

How was this compared to your first Ed run? As you know, I am the Queen of the SS SubOptimal so have no pointers, but I will owe you one after I know something. Very sweet run - well done.

Also just a massive thank you to AFH for having a board that is still being used for logs and such. After a long exile from the Kingdom, I thought these sorts of things had disappeared, just when I might get less sub-optimal (not saying I will, just a possibility.)

It's great to see also that my very old (and total guess on log-in) password still works.

well my first run was... not so good, it was 5/1059. I didn't get my organs bought very quickly, I wasted a skill point in the curses tree, I didn't realize the strength of the talismans yet, and generally I just didn't know what the best "Ed" way to handle things was. oh yeah, and I wasted a bunch of turns on stuff like the daily dungeon and getting an enchanted bean (given the way the other quests were going I thought it was reasonable that the beanstalk would disappear). And I was just coming out of my blistering 178-day heavy rains run that I took a break in the middle of, so I was probably a bit rusty as well.

while it's probably not very helpful a 3/752 run is probably my goal for Ed (daycount at least) so for you to go from 10 days to 3 days especially after a break is pretty impressive. So I very much appreciate you posting your run as I'm doing a 5 point run this time through so your run skill tree choices are very relevant to me.

First off congrats on a 3 day run in Ed!

Interesting the way you used the cyclops eye-drops from chateau, I had been using mine in the cranny for evil eyes, but I might switch to your method, especially when i get the book of matches.

Some thoughts:
You kind of mentioned it, but when starting out, the try out going to the shore as your first 3 adventures, I find that it easily gets to me to level 3, regens mana which allows me to start running the +20ML right away and gets it out of the way. Its a slight drop off in substats, I think 78 instead of the the 86 you got here, but I find it useful.

You mentioned you wanted some suggestions on how to speed up bridge building and a better second SR target, well here is my current thought that I have been toying with my last two ascensions. Instead of using your first 3 clovers on getting the ore for mountain quest, instead use your second SR to get the dwarf foreman, drop a talsiman of rene on him to force a complete outfit, then mine for the necessary ore. Now use those same three clovers on the bridge to get 9/9 pieces. If you are lucky when mining, and get a loadstone, then you can stench a 100% drop plank guy at some point and hopefully really decrease your turns needed. But there is a balancing act to consider, reducing turns in the chasm reduces Ka count, and reduces stats since you get no real stats for mining, also make sure to have a Ed bandage handy.

I'm 50/50 on using your day 2 copy on the assassin, using http://kol.coldfront.net/thekolwiki/ind ... ja_Snowmen and the low availablity of init buffs found in Ed I have been using my painting on modern zombies in the nook for five beeps, in most cases, even if it costs me extra meat. What I have been doing is copying the first one I see, but don't use it until I'm closing in on 25. I will only use it if I am at 28/29/30/31 evil left. At 27 its either going to save me 0 or 1 turn (if I get a lucky love bug), at 26, 0 turns. If I don't use it, I will sell as much as I can and wait until I reach gaudy pirate, but could still be used on a third assassin if you want.

Finally, I'm not a big fan of taking the Hot Dogs as your astral consumable, while it lacks the stats, the turn gen on the liver astral consumables are pretty nice, and it allows me to drink the tea's in the speakeasy for stats.

This is interesting and I'll definitely look into it, although I'm a little afraid since historically I always have terrible luck with mining.

Right--I didn't think that choice through very well. The modern zombie thing sounds interesting.

I'll definitely look at this planning my consumables for future runs, although I'm not entirely sold on the pilsners--my original reasoning for taking AHD was that there was a real lack of good food options, especially on day 1. Mostly what I see from other people is eating some CI food to fill this gap--are there other viable options I'm missing?

I was scared of mining too, take a look at http://ectabo.com/kol/mining/ give it a try in after core so you understand how it works. But it works pretty well for me.

Player not from AfH returning to KoL super recently (quit after first mafia penguin event, lost old account). Just wanted to come in and say that this log (specifically this one without conspiracy island) really helped me get my 3 day ed run. Everyone else here seemed to be spamming IotMs and I did not think a 3 dayer was possible without all of them. TY for posting your log. I wished I kept one but I didn't know about programs that automatically do it for you now. Back in the day, logs were kept by hand...

I definitely think that I can improve as I messed up in a lot of places. I missed 3 semirares, never took priest as a servant (ka was tight the whole run, never got elemental wards, had to spend a lot of time farming ka), failed a bunch of tests (pool skill, insult pong), died a bunch of times, didn't abuse adventure queue, did some quests in wrong order, did not reach/know where zone unlocks were to get the best food/booze, etc. Unfortunately, I'm too burned out from that run--going to take it easy for a while.
