Slaw's 2/576 HCEd (This is where I usually type comments!)

Post by yojimbos_law » Mon Mar 09, 2015 9:51 pm

I did a run, so here's a log.

Overall, this run has a lot of mediocre RNG and some highly suspect strategies. There should be a lot of room for improvement in the plan and execution, so I'm expecting big things from you, log reader! Please ask questions or comment if something seems inexplicable or just obviously incorrect to do; examples of constructive comments and critiques are included early in the log (i.e. ctrl+f 'cannon').
NEW Ed Hardcore Actually Ed the Undying ASCENSION STARTED 20150308
------------------------------

This log was created by the Ascension Log Visualizer 3.7.4.1.
The basic idea and the format of this parser have been borrowed from the AFH MafiaLog Parser by VladimirPootin and QuantumNightmare.

===Day 1===
The goal of this run was just to do a 2 day HCEd run, so stop reading here if turnbloat offends your sensibilities.

For the pre run stuff, I take the xi receiver to maximize ultra-burrito consumption and +10% item accessory having-ness, blender to maximize turnbloat, belt to maximize turns not spent leveling, bram because I hate noncombats and the song set and because I haven't seen anything else reasonable [No, I don't think mountain man is a thing.], and pilsners because I want them to be my favorite booze eventually and because distention pills aren't standard or Edcessible (get it? ha!).

Starting with all the skills, imbues, and iotms, for what it's worth. Familiar plan revolves around not getting fucked like last run: 1 priest (level 3), 5 scribe (level 6), 4 cat (level 9), 0 bellydancer (level 12). I think these are correct with the exception of the bellydancer which is taken solely out of a well-justified fear of the lash limit; missing daycount by 1 turn due to an invisible counter being hard to track is probably my worst experience with KoL, so I'd recommend avoiding it if possible.

As for ka purchases, all the consumption skills and the DA skill on day 1 followed by the survival skills on day 2. Note that the +init% skills are taken solely for the alcove and aren't actually good at all.
[0] Ascension Start [0,0,0]
-> Turn [0] none
Note that this is the point where I knew this run would be a 2 dayer, since I got 5 porquoise gems. They are the best gems for Blender HCEd (due to +item/meat/moxie), and pork gem yahtzees are +50 ascension points.

Cannonfire40: Terrible.
YOJimbOS_law: :D
YoJiMBos_LAw: just wait, it gets worse.
Cannonfire40: Come on, with ed hat you don't need nearly that much.

You're welcome to believe cannonfire about this. I mean, it's a free country, man. However, I believe he's actually a butt that can't even the HC good.

Please kmail, pm, or chat in /hardcore and /butts about alternatives to this so I can tell them to people that ask me for advice instead of saying 'Oh, I just sewer level for 40 turns and then play a BIG run'.

Cannonfire40: I hate you.
yOjImBos_laW: hahahaha
YOJIMBoS_law: 40 is a nice round number.
yoJImBoS_lAW: so I spent 40 turns there.
yOjImbOS_LAW: btw, can I post your CI thoughts in my annotated log?
Cannonfire40: Yes.
Cannonfire40: Please do
Cannonfire40: That you spend that many turns there is awful
Cannonfire40: and completely fucking unacceptable

Another valuable counterpoint to CIwer leveling. Cannon has a point: 40 turns is a lot. Cutting this down to 20-30 could work, but I won't be bothering to try.

Knoll turnbloat isn't so bad. I plan to use a renen on the skirt, but (as with basically every renen target barring the f'c'le and clues) I lash first to try to save the renen and succeed. Just a small thing that probably ends up netting you 2-4 extra renens, effectively, each run.

This weird hopping around between the barrr and niche is just to swap in my ed hat and die for effectively a full heal between insults whenever I wouldn't otherwise be able to insult the first pirate on my first life. HCEd is fiddly as all hell. Also burning a horus talisman which I used while collecting insults before heading back for the cap'm's map with -combat% running.

You said in chat I could ask all the bad questions. Please excuse the cluelessness that may be coming - your "turn bloat" run is like 60 turns less than my "as fast as I can go", so I'm looking to figure out what horrible habits I have and if there are things I simply don't know about.

- Did you push a button in the hatch before you started running in the lab? If yes, which one?

- If you had gotten the keycard while on CI would you have nightcapped with a Highest Bitter?

- How do you set your Ed crown?

- Why the Beanbat instead of Batrat? Does it matter?

Comment: Literally? Lash doesn't work on bridge parts? FML. How can I not notice something like 20 lash attempts not working?
Thanks, Lightwolf. That makes sense.

- Are you running all the buffs? (Well, obviously you only need to run the non-com where you need non-com.)

- You say, "Closeting shenanigans. No real reason for it this run, unlike most." regarding bowling balls. Why do you closet bowling balls?

- You say, "I don't banish the attorneys since I intend to lash them for free runs." What does that mean?
Figured out the writ thing. Kind of surprised that is worth using lash on. If you fail to get a writ one time it is equal to sending them on vacation, right? I mean vacation doesn't give stats, but from a turns spent perspective?

I think I need to play my next run while looking at this. Thank you for posting it! <3

Lash does work on bridge parts, its just that they have a lot of items.

Figured out the writ thing. Kind of surprised that is worth using lash on. If you fail to get a writ one time it is equal to sending them on vacation, right? I mean vacation doesn't give stats, but from a turns spent perspective?
Not quite, since the office building and apartment noncombats are scheduled. You need to fight 9(?) pygmies in the office building, so assuming you're not worried about getting enough files, every free run is a turn saved (minus whatever fraction of a powerlevelling turn the stats would have been worth).
scullyangel wrote:- You say, "Closeting shenanigans. No real reason for it this run, unlike most." regarding bowling balls. Why do you closet bowling balls?
As far as I know, the main reason to closet bowling balls is if you used a limited duration banish on one of the pygmies. You want to make sure you get all 5 bowling balls before the banish runs out. Not sure if that's the case in HC, but in SC, I usually use pantsgiving banish (30 turns) on the janitor, and then do the apartment and hospital before the bowling alley, so putting off the first four bowling noncombats gives some wiggle room to finish farming them before the janitor comes back.

scullyangel wrote:You said in chat I could ask all the bad questions.

I pushed the ooze one (+150 ML to all) on turn 2-3. It's probably correct to push it on turn 0 (if you're doing CI), but I tend to be cautious about early +ML stuff.
- If you had gotten the keycard while on CI would you have nightcapped with a Highest Bitter?
Unlikely. I don't think the +item% saves many turns at that specific point in my run, and the drink is somewhat worse than meade (~1.5 turns not including the keycard turn). I may have put off drinking pilsner #4 in case the jungle juice would help powerleveling to 13 (which took precisely 0 turns this run), but I'd have to be either need to have a ton of extra turns (at least 7) or be massively underleveled (quite literally >2k mainstat below 13) to actually do that.
- How do you set your Ed crown?
It's generally set to +20ML with a few exceptions:
  • +2 myst/fight is used for several turns in CI until I have enough hp to survive the elemental hit at +100ML (~70 maxhp).
  • the blocking setting is used for bram and the ninja assassins out of laziness.
  • the +item% setting is used when I'm very close to capping drops or when I can't cap drops and want to pretend I can (+560% item ==> +570% item in a-boo peak, +260% ==> +270% in the nook, etc.)
I'm pretty sure that's it.
- Why the Beanbat instead of Batrat? Does it matter?
The beanbat has fewer items than the ratbats and batrats, so you have a higher chance to lash one (1/2 vs. 1/3 and 1/4). This is more important than the drop rate (to me) since it represents the chance that I get to not burn a renen or YR here. works
Comment: Literally? Lash doesn't work on bridge parts? FML. How can I not notice something like 20 lash attempts not working?

- Is there any hope for me if I failed to notice lash not working on bridge parts?
I've heard that it works (see above), but it takes soooo many lashes to get so few parts. Even with those parts, it'd take me until turn 21 to finish the bridge (regardless of whether I clover, too), so it would have saved literally nothing in my run. Even if you're on the edge of making a bridge and lash, say, 2 wood and 2 fastener total, that's spending something like 20 lashes to save ~2 turns; it's not terribly efficient when other options can save the same amount with fewer.
- Are you running all the buffs? (Well, obviously you only need to run the non-com where you need non-com.)
Yes. I run basically all of the buffs at almost all times. The only real exceptions are when trying to extend my inhaler with stone wool and letting purr drop when I'm running the priest for awhile.
- You say, "Closeting shenanigans. No real reason for it this run, unlike most." regarding bowling balls. Why do you closet bowling balls?
Closeted bowling balls don't trigger the bowling alley NC. My runs usually have a limited time banisher used on the orderlies and sometimes drunk (louder than bomb and/or champagne popper), which can run out if you're encountering the noncombats as you go. I also like to encounter my arrowed monsters in the desert or hidden apartment/office (or the sea if I'm trying to copy a LFM with green taffy), so being able to choose when I get the bowling ball NCs allows me to more easily manage the arrowed monster timing. Oh, sometimes there are considerations about limited buff duration, too, like if I'm running blue taffy and don't want to waste it on NCs. Basically there's almost always some small, nontrivial benefit to closeting the bowling balls, so I just do it out of habit even if it doesn't save anything in this particular instance.
- You say, "I don't banish the attorneys since I intend to lash them for free runs." What does that mean?
The short writ of habeas corpus is a free run when used on pygmies. It has a 1/3 chance to be lashed and a 5% base drop rate from lawyers. It's a pretty common strategy to just banish lawyers in most paths to make sure you don't get screwed by the RNG with thrice cursed and the McClusky file, but both of those are very easy to get in Ed (since you only need 1 shaman for thrice cursed with proper abuse of undying) and Ed has a very high chance to pickpocket the short writs.
I think I need to play my next run while looking at this. Thank you for posting it! <3

I though there was always a 100% crude, which would mean your lash is always going to hit that one anyway. Or am I just totally clueless as to how this works now?

As far as I know, lash doesn't care about the drop rate. It just forces a randomly selected pickpocketable item to drop (assigning equal probability to each such item, like v-pocket and rave steal do). In this case, it has a 1/3 chance of hitting the 100% crude, a 1/3 chance to hit the 30% one, and a 1/3 chance to hit the 10% one. If you math this out with, say, +220% item you see that I'd get 1 + 3.2*0.3 + 3.2 * 0.1 = 2.28 crude per turn without lash and 1/3*(1 + 3.2*0.3 + 3.2*0.1) + 1/3*(1 + 1 + 3.2*0.1) + 1/3*(1 + 3.2*0.3 + 1) = 2.52 crude per turn with lash, which is a pretty substantial improvement! Edit: it works out to 11.4 vs 12.6 crudes on average in the first 5 cartels.

This mechanism is what makes lash so powerful in many relevant situations. Things like the evil eyes, sonars, and most +ML/stat gear would be much more troublesome to force if it didn't work in this fashion.

Ok, going to try not to waste lashes!

I also didn't know about needing to hit a certain number of pygmys, so that all makes a lot more sense.

I have the pygmy orderlies in my ice house, that should be AMC Gremlin instead?

Dunno. I'm under the impression that both save ~2 turns in HCNP, so I imagine they're pretty much indistinguishable in HCEd, too.

Keep in mind it's the Office Building and Apartment noncombats that are scheduled to occur on fixed adventures in those subzones. The Hospital and Bowling Alley don't have any delay() type effect, so every orderly you encounter is a wasted turn.

That's true for AMC as well. Both can be banished easily in Ed, but only the orderlies have a potential free runaway (with writ). Since Ed should generate more writs on average than most runs, I suspect the balance is in favor of using Ice House on the AMC.

As a side note, the wealth of extra lash options in Ed might actually make dancer the better turn-cutting servant for level 12, assuming you've already used your imbues and you don't need to run scribe for stats during level 12. Freeing up 8 or more lashes for use earlier on tatters/writs/whatever might actually save more turns than a low level maid during nuns. I'll take a look before I start my 2-day attempts.

hi! Just a few questions from a noob. I noticed you didn't really use spells to attack, like ever. Do you just attack with your weapon repeatedly? Does lash kill them? What's your in-run gear look like other than whatever you pick up? Do you stick with staff of ed until lv11?

Not including flyering, combat usually goes like this:

Scarab mp
if damaging the monster will kill it
dictionary for 30 rounds
scarab mp
dictionary for 30 rounds
scarab mp
kill the monster for 0 mp somehow
endif
if I can reduce the monster to dead or fist of the mummy range by just attacking and/or using the lovebug stench thing
start doing that
scarab mp
do that some more
scarab mp
finish doing that
skill fist of the mummy
endif
if neither method works
dictionary for 30 rounds
scarab mp
dictionary for 30 rounds
scarab mp
skill storm of scarabs
endif

Ed combat sucks so much.

Edit: it looks like I killed ~100 monsters by just attacking them to death, ~25 by mummy fisting + attacking, and ~350 with storm of scarabs.

Unless I need an outfit, it looks like this:

Head: 'edpiece on +20ml
back: best +spell damage thing
shirt: goth shirt or highest DA thing
weapon: serpentine sword with shield > witty rapier > serpentine sword sans shield > curmudgel > ocarina of space > ed staff
offhand: snake shield > engorged sausages and you (actually happened to me 2 runs ago) > anything with mp regen > gore bucket (out of spite for it costing me a turn once).
pants: highest DA pants since I never get lucky enough for buoy bottoms or troll britches. Usually war pants > swash pants > boss bat pants > pantsless.
a1: astral belt
a2: whatever +ML thing I find (preferably badge of authority).
a3: bram's choker and xi wrist-puter situationally.
Kalefornya wrote:sorry if this is obvious but--what's the benefit of running thoth all run?
I don't actually know what that does. I imagine it's +myst or +spell damage, in which case, I run it to make things dead easier. Perhaps I could make things dead just as easily without it, but considering which buffs I need is much harder than just running a couple hundred turns of everything but shed at all times (being mindful of the 10 effect limit for stone wool for the nuns).

Hi! I was about to ask how you survive combat but I saw this and I somehow got more confused. How do you do this? Because I die first round almost all the time at low levels. Also, what's the point of prolonging fights?

Well, with CI the low levels really whiz by. Notice that I don't leave there for the first time until level 7 (probably should've for an earlier YR, but I'm really forgetful about that kind of thing) with 24 base moxie/muscle. I keep up hair spray and ben-gal balm for most of the run, too. Monsters that are approximately level-appropriate tend to kill me in 2 hits on day 1 before I purchase tougher skin (turn ~130 this run) and 2-3 hits afterwards, and on day 2, I purchase the +muscle and/or +moxie skills as soon as I enter the underworld after a monster hits me for more than my maxhp (happened in the top floor of the giant's castle). It's smooth sailing after that since torso's DA boost lets me survive several hits. I should also probably point out that I do a lot of damage arithmetic between adventuring; 1.25 * ( [monster attack] - [moxie] - [DR] ) * [DA fraction] gives a decently tight upper bound on monster damage, and the start of combat elemental damage hit from +ML can be estimated using this formula times 1.1 http://kolspading.com/forums/viewtopic. ... =436#p4788. I'm sorry in advance if using the latter formula gets you killed.

There are a couple benefits to drawing out fights, namely mp and ka (in addition to flyering and insulting). You want to fight every undead monster 3 times due to the 'edpiece's start of combat chance to give ka (it can happen multiple times/combat, last I played Ed), and whenever mp is marginally scarce, you want to cast love scarabs 3 times/combat. Letting the fight hit 30 rounds is often just the easiest way to do this. Oh, you also need to prolong combat when waiting for the bellydancer PP, but that's generally pretty quick.

Winklered, inhaler (extended with stone wool), airborne mutagen, the ka skill, the gnome +meat% passive, and whatever else I happen to find in run (e.g. acoustic guitarrr for +8%, sometimes). You could summon the +100% meat demon, but I'm pretty sure that's not really worthwhile; it costs a tattered scrap of paper and however long it takes to find 3 thin black candles and makes the nuns 3.7 turns shorter when added to the above setup. It's worthwhile if you know the forced NC in the top floor is due soon, where 'soon' is some number that would be difficult to compute without a simulation (it's at least 4, though).
