Eek! At least I admitted to one obvious error on that front before you pointed it out, but I think he still might disown me.

I really wanted to go straight Pac-10, but that Husker dude is so awesome, especially when he's bouncing on his head. My mistake!

Well, considering how relatively lame the Big Ten did with Snark's straight-line support, maybe she should continue to root for the Big Ten!

Some analysis:

Big Ten Teams that won:
Iowa (Hawkeyes)
Illinois (Illini)
Ohio State (Buckeyes)

Big Ten Teams that lost:
Northwestern (Wildcats)
Michigan State (Spartans)
Penn State (Nittany Lions)
Michigan (Wolverines)
Wisconsin (Badgers)

The only winning mascots are those that are barely a thing. Hawkeyes aren't Hawks. Depending on who you ask, they're nothing, an homage to a Native American chief, or Alan Alda. Their physical mascot is a big bird that wears a helmet like he's a special needs avian or something.

The Illini are again not really a thing. I guess it's technically another Native American but even wikipedia lists "mascot: none" for Illinois.

Ohio State, while my dear alma matter, has a pretty weak mascot. It's a nut. Granted, if you eat enough of them, you'll probably get a pretty bad stomach ache. They're also poisonous to cattle. Brutus Buckeye is kind of a cool guy, but he's named after the guy who killed Caesar. That's less cool. He also got roughed up by a Bobcat this year, so he lost some street cred.

Now the teams that lost include the wildcat, while pretty weak, is at least a thing. It's basically a house cat that eats small rodents. No real pride in that. The Spartan is a nice mascot. I'd make a 300 reference, but I never saw it. Lions, badgers, and Wolverines are all pretty bad assed and don't need explanations.

So, in closing, if you're in the big ten, you better have a weak mascot (or apparently none at all) if you want to have success. And that, Snark, is why the awesome Husker dude cheered his team to embarrassment.

That ended up being a very exciting game, even it was a lower scoring match than expected.

Also, how much do I owe thacon? 250k?

The first half was great and the end of the fourth was exciting, but I thought most of the second half was fairly boring. It's a shame the game swung in the end based on a bad call, but oh well. (His wrist was down) I think they need to do something about the rule where you're not down if you end up on top of the defender on the ground. With how often they talk about player safety, you'd think they'd want to discourage the defense from tackling people after they get back up because, well, maybe they hadn't actually touched the ground.

And don't worry about sending me meat. We never really firmed up the stakes, so let's call it even.

ETA: NCAA Football Rules: "PROTECTION OF DEFENSELESS PLAYERS--In 2008, the committee introduced a separate rule prohibiting initiating contact with and targeting a defenseless opponent. The following are situations in which defenseless players are susceptible to serious injury:...The player who has relaxed once the ball has become dead."

So the play was never actually dead because the whistle was never blown, but the guy obviously relaxed. I think if in the second before he started running again, an Oregon defender layed him out, it would have been a personal foul.

I'm pretty disappointed that "Title Vacated" won. One person is responsible: Chip Kelly. His balls were gone. Sure, he had a couple ballsy plays like the fake punt. But where was the onside kick late in the game? Where was the "calling the same play 10 times in a row because it kept working?" Why didn't they attack the edges? The defense showed up and did what it needed to, the offense was completely lackluster.

Auburn didn't win that game, Oregon lost it.

Also, I'd take TCU over both of those teams. I think Stanford could have handled either. We need a motherfucking playoff, the entire idea of a National Champion without one is asinine.

Also, I think that this goes to show why 40 days of rest is completely retarded. It takes nearly a full quarter to work out the kinks. I'm not sure I saw a January bowl game where the teams looked like they did in November.

Fuck fuck fuck. So much for having a classy program. They should fire Tressel and forfeit the entire season. I think players should be able to sell whatever they want, but the rules are the rules and everyone involved knew exactly what they were doing.

What exactly happened with Tressel? I'm seeing all my old college buddies make snarky comments on Facebook, but I have no clue what's going on.

So Ohio State has vacated all of its wins from the 2010 season, including its Sugar Bowl victory over Arkansas. The team that I feel the worst for is Michigan State, since it finished in a 3-way tie with tOSU and Wisconsin but got left out of a BCS Bowl. Had tOSU not played its ineligible players, it likely would have lost at least one more game, and MSU would've gotten a BCS bid.

Similarly, if Oregon cheated (as it seems to be the case), I'm going to feel like Stanford got screwed out of the BCS Championship Game. . . .

Cheated is sort of strong, but yeah, it's entirely possible that this year will end with 3/8 BCS teams invalidated. I don't know how people look at that and conclude anything except that the entire system is ridiculously crooked.

Oh, and Stanford would have kicked Auburn's ass. If only Owusu hadn't been injured, that one play basically cost us the national championship.

(5:43:53 PM) DVvM: You know, reading about this Miami NCAA scandal would be much more impactful if it wasn't Miami.
(5:44:24 PM) DVvM: I mean, people pretty much knew that Miami was dirty since the 80s, right?

Also, is it too early to start talking about the 11-12 season? How about this for a conversation starter: "if Oregon beats LSU, the winner of Oregon-Stanford is in the NC Game."

Maybe, but Pac-10 -- we'll see about Utah and Colorado -- teams have a tendency to pull off upsets. The rivalry games are especially dangerous when one team (Oregon, Stanford) is much better than the other (Oregon State, Cal).

Aww you think Cal can beat Stanford, that's so cute.

(I'm fully aware that things can totally go to crap in a season, but if Cal wins Big Game this season I will poop myself.)

I recall the 1991 season, when Cal was 9-1 going into the Big Game, having lost only to eventual co-national champ Washington by 24-17, only to get crushed by Stanford 38-21. . . . Although in looking at Stanford's record, they were 6-4 going into the game so not as bad as I remembered. Anyway, considering that bad Stanford teams have upset USC and Notre Dame on more than one occasion, might I suggest that you stock up on some Depends, just in case?
