Instalite's 3-day 738-turn SCNP AT (Blender)

Post by Instalite » Mon Jul 28, 2008 2:36 pm

It feels weird to post this on a board sparsely populated with logs of much better runs, but Kujjie encouraged me to seek some collective wisdom, so here goes.

Some bits are just plain embarrassing, starting from forgetting to activate the screwdriver quest, but besides the obvious I have fairly few ideas about what I should focus on improving. I'd very much appreciate any advice on strategy, big or small.

Mafia seems to have had a few hiccups in the logging, so a few places look weird and notably the day boundaries have mysteriously disappeared.

Things I've been considering for next time
  • I should do something to wrangle the turns I need without getting liver.
  • Farming ratchets instead of hitting the middle chamber might be a good idea.
  • Now that I have the fireworks, I can't really justify the hatrack. I take not needing more sombrero turns as a sign that my questing was inefficient.
  • A combat strategy that doesn't involve pulling two mercenaries would be nice. Brimstone is probably a bad habit, too. I wasn't even Vcrisising.

Some quick thoughts, though 90% of what I know about speed softcore comes from Kujjie and Alrik, so ignore me and listen to them if there's a conflict in advice. . . .

1) V crisis will speed you up, seriously. For the 888 contest, I foolishly went with a BRC and no V crisis. Result: 777 turns used. For KoLA, I went with V crisis. Result: 633 turns used.

2) I used to like Blender, but Vole works better with V crisis.

3) I like to farm the ratchets after pulling the first one. Ice sickle turns into an ice pick, flaming item into a flaming shirt. I pull BHH pants and a Mr. A Jr., and use a semi-rare on cyclops eyedrops (though some of that goes toward the filthworms). It may not be turn count saving, but it allows you to flyer the rats, which is better than turning the wheel in the Middle Chamber. Olfaction is needed, though.

4) Yeah, I'd ditch the hatrack. I *might* use mine for the nuns, but that'd be about it.

Standing offer for anyone else out there as well. Toss up a log, and we'll be happy to try and give a little advice. It's pretty amazing how much improvement can be had from a nice log delving.
Instalite wrote:My familiars outside the basic set are the Green Pixie, Llama Lama, and Mad Hatrack.
Llama and pixie are two of the best for softcore, so far so good. If you're looking to expand, one of the volleyfish (ggg or hobo) might be good, and the volleychauns are a very nice standby. However, a solid volley and fairy (along with the sombrero) are all that's needed. If you're happy with those two, you should be fine.
Instalite wrote:[*]Now that I have the fireworks, I can't really justify the hatrack. I take not needing more sombrero turns as a sign that my questing was inefficient.
The biggest downside to the hatrack in softcore is not being able to use familiar equipment. Hardcore it's a great familiar, as it gives multi-functionality in a single familiar without much effort. Softcore really wants to use equipment. Fireworks (assuming 1/2 wax lips) over the course of this run would have given over 400 mainstat (accounting for stat days). That's fairly significant. Wax lips would give even more, at the cost of some item drop. The hatrack is still nice for the nuns, where stats should be all accounted for, and meat drops could save turns. Aside from there, you'd probably be better served moving the exp bar along. For hardcore, it's probably a top 3 familiar though.
Instalite wrote:Things I've been considering for next time
[*]I should do something to wrangle the turns I need without getting liver.
Once you can get to around 700 turns for a run, liver should be the next thing to go. Aside from a minor amount of stats, it's mostly wasted turns.
Instalite wrote:[*]Farming ratchets instead of hitting the middle chamber might be a good idea.
With olfaction, the upper chamber becomes surprisingly effective. I tend to save the rats for flyers, and line up my high item drop boosts with the filthworms. Something like (1) find gland #1, (2) olfact a tomb rat, (3) use gland, blue cones, cyclops eyedrops, and any other high item drop bonus, (4) find glands 2 and 3 (but not killing queen yet, that wastes a turn of item buff), (5) kill tomb rats with remaining bonus.
Instalite wrote:[*]A combat strategy that doesn't involve pulling two mercenaries would be nice. Brimstone is probably a bad habit, too. I wasn't even Vcrisising.
Mercs are a nice strategy without a strong combat suite. I see you're lacking shieldbutt, which is probably the easiest non-merc method. Brimstone beret is quite nice, as it gives a hefty moxie boost, great DA, and an extra song slot. Crisis is quite handy, and fairly easy to manage with both shieldbutt and a beret. The high defense from a pilgrim shield and a Tao'd beret will provide ample protection from a few hits. Shieldbutt also helps micro-managing monster HP, as you can bring them to a single hit worth of life, then critical the rest away.

At maximum efficiency crisis will give 2 extra mainstat per combat. This is roughly 950 mainstat for your posted run if critical hits killed every single monster that run. In practice this bonus ends up being far less. A couple of extra absinthe or gongs would provide the same amount of stats, at less RL time. Very fast runs are possible without crisis, however absolute optimal will require maximizing stats from combats. The total number of turns between an optimal run with crisis and without might only be 10 or 15.

A couple of other things...

I mentioned Shieldbutt as a useful skill you don't have. A few others I'd recommend would be Cannelloni Cocoon, Overdeveloped Sense of Self Preservation, Spirit of Ravioli, Aloysius' Antiphon of Aptitude, and some form of elemental damage. Otherwise a solid base skillset seems to be in place.

Blender is a nice sign when turn generation is an issue, but for turn optimization, muscle signs are far better. Save turns at the meatcar and pirate quests, instant MCD, mushroom plot, and bakery access are all very useful. I'm partial to vole for the bonus to crisis, but wallaby is a very popular sign as well.

Instalite wrote:[28-50] Got Baron von Ratsworth's monocle

Three extra turns for a small amount of item drop. Probably not a bad idea considering the length of the tavern already, but I'd probably skip it. Better item drop can be had from Jrs or Jeks, and accessories are by far the hardest slot to switch around. So many good choices.

Instalite wrote:[51-54] Barrel Full of Barrels

The barrels are pretty terrible, and should never be used in softcore. They're a slightly ok option for hardcore if booze situation is desperate, but softcore can pull drinks if things are that bad. Barrels are roughly the same as doing PvP for flowers and drinking schnapps, without the adventure cost or explosions.

Instalite wrote:[300-323] Barrrney's Barrr
+> [312] Got bottle of whiskey, bottle of vodka
+> [318] Got bottle of vodka, bottle of gin, bottle of gin

The stat adventure isn't too bad, especially if you've already drank. Since you did craft your own booze, taking base bottles isn't a terrible idea here, however it does cost some stats. Another drinking option is pulling the booze mixers (rye sprouts, brown sugar, etc), and crafting bottles to be mixed up.

Instalite wrote:I take not needing more sombrero turns as a sign that my questing was inefficient.
It looks as though there was just an over-abundance of dance card leveling. With a green pixie, absinthe leveling is a very nice choice. Gongs are also very handy. With a little more leveling from those two sources, in addition to adding the firework stats and some more sombrero usage... the need for dance cards decreases, which should help overall turncount. Efficient leveling is the biggest key for getting turncount around 650 and below.

I'll take another pass through the log, and try to hit on the pull list when I have some more time. Still, 738 is a very nice turncount for what appears to be a first real attempt at softcore speed. Nice job, hope your next run is able to break 700 or much better!

Indeed -- a fantastic shot at softcore speed. This run cut turns in all of the right places with nice use of pies and semirares and effective combat/noncombat rate modification.

If you can cut half of your leveling turns (doable, I think) and then skip the friars, you'll be at 660. Getting access to a navel ring for "bonus" adventures every day will get you below 650.

As suggested earlier, absinthe and gong use will help decrease the time you need to spend farming dance cards. As your turncount decreases, you can start trading consumables with high adventure yields for items with high stat yields. Furthermore, if you tighten up your pull list, you will also have room to pull some stat items like dance cards or clovers.

Where might you save a couple pulls? When you get a combat set, you can cut the merc/bot. Switching from the hatrack will save you a hat pull or two. When you hit 3-days, you'll often be unable to eat all of the pies you want, so you'll farm the HitS for the star chart and maybe the star hat and weapon. If you're really tight on pulls, you might consider farming one item piece for each outfit you pull ... and then pulling the remaining pieces. The second inhaler might only save a turn or two -- but run numbers to make sure, since you don't have candy hearts.

Anyway -- thanks for posting! It's good to see someone put down a great run ... and then want to beat it!

Thanks, guys. That was a real "Why didn't I think of that?" experience. My absinthe/gong management was pretty horrible. And I, uh, hadn't considered the Jr. or bounty pants and didn't remember the base booze ingredients existed.

I don't rightly remember what reasoning led me to use the barrels. I believe it involved a fair bit of panic after the wasted early turns and the long tavern.

I do want to go muscle sign, but it will take some math to convince myself I don't need the Blender turns.

I was thinking I really want to skip the Hole because it potentially involves a lot of extra castle turns. Is that overly paranoid?

That's good thinking ... and I still believe it, sometimes. The problem is that you won't be able to eat (or maybe even pull) all the pies and extra equipment that you might want to, so you'll need to make some choices based on what kind of yields you get.

On a three day run, you'll have room for nine pies. Three legend, for sure. That means you'll need to reserve at least two more pulls for !potions. Then, three digital, which will get you 24-30 pixels. Only in 1/27 runs will you get the 30 you need for the key. You'll need to decide if you want to pull a fourth digital pie rather than hunting for the remaining handful of white pixels ... which is a kinda crappy stat location. If you decide to farm pixels, you can pull three star pies and almost guarantee your star key. Then, you'll need three additional pulls to skip the HitS -- six total pulls.

If you're lucky, you can get by with two star pies, but it's a 1/27 shot there, too (since you have a 1/9 chance of getting the stars and 1/3 chance of getting the lines). However, the HitS and castle are decent stat locations, so I don't mind spending a few extra turns there. In fact, you may need to spend a few extra turns in the castle anyway if you're using a demon name to speed up the nuns. So, you can pull the two pies, open the HitS, sniff an astronomer for start charts, and see how many stars and lines you have once you have two charts. You might be able to make both the star hat and star key, for example, or you might be close to all three. This path will cost you two or three total pulls.

So ... it really depends on your pull situation, your stat situation, and what yields you get from your pies. In general, I tend to spend a few turns in the HitS rather than spending extra pulls to skip it entirely.

Alrik makes a lot of good points, but I'll take a slightly different approach to the question.

If I can spend ~20 turns in the 8-bit realm, or ~20 turns in the HitS, I'll take the higher ML zone every time. I use this general guideline throughout my run as I'm determining which pulls I want to use. Stunt nuts or spooky-gro? Drum Machine or Harem Veil? Always take the higher ML, it'll make your adventuring stat gains higher, which decreases the powerleveling needed, and as a result, your overall turncount. When in doubt, "waste" turns in a high ML zone and "skip" the lower ML zones.

My 2 cents: muscle sign gives you 2 items that you might have to pull otherwise (wheels + frilly skirt). Blender gives you 1 item, at the lair. Sacrificing the drinking adventures gives you an extra pull, which you can use to potentially save yourself a lot of trouble. besides, I don't think adventure count is a problem for you anymore.

P.S. Sorry, but I did a non-teddy borg run and beat you

Pulling dope wheels seems like a good idea regardless. Muscle sign gives you tires, but then the RNG decides how long it takes you to get sweet rims.

Skip the RNG entirely! I tend to use my first clover in the sewer and take: accordion, totem, trinket. Trinket becomes rims, and later pull the planks.
