Kelemvor SCNP TT Mongoose 3/696 (2 day attempt)

Will have a full log up eventually, but for now:

Day 1 went great, and I was running about 5 adventures lower than estimated.

Day 2 was a non-stop RNG fuckfest:
- 34 turns in the airship, running 20% noncom
- 43 turns in the castle, running 20% noncom
- 10 turns to get swordfish, running 20% noncom
- 12 turns to make Talisman with olfaction
- 0 for 3 on the first gland with 205% item drop and a charged 35 pound jack (that's 350% item drop)

Some other stuff that could have been mitigated w/skills and a hound, but was still pretty shitty RNG:
- 26 turns between the orchard and junkyard and I still don't have the last tool
- 33 turns to collect ratchets

If anyone needs me, I'll be curled up in the fetal position, crying softly.

There's a bunch of delay in the airship, I don't think 34 turns is bad RNG (much shorter and you get the delay in crappy early zones instead). The rest of that looks pretty bad though.

Hm...the last few runs that I did for speed, I spent 33, 30, 26, and 24 turns in the airship.

I suppose I just had good luck then, and I should be planning for 35 turns in the airship.

Thanks for the hug, Ceird! I needed that. (Was thinking about quitting speed ascending about an hour ago -- it's kind of soul-crushing to not make any significant mistakes and have your run borked by RNG -- but I'm better now. I think.)

You get over it, eventually. Make a few more attempts and the RNG will eventually cooperate on one of them.

I think I just don't get along with muscle attempts. My type II muscle run was a disaster too (although I could have played it differently).

Also, at least I didn't have to slog through an HCO lead-in to make the attempt at all. Karma FTW!

After going through my log and doing some reflection, my RNG wasn't quite as bad as I originally thought. Decidedly worse than average, but a lot of my turncount estimations were grossly padded because I was 5/1 absintheing (you'll see why in a bit). Here are the best and worst bits of my RNG:

Good: 2 turn larva, 5 turns in library to unlock both upstairs and conservatory, 4 turns sonars, 6 turn f'c'le, first turn cellar unlock, 3/2 clovers from hermit, picked up an AC form the tavern.

Bad: min booze yield on both rations and lunchboxes day 1, tough tower, 20 turn tavern, 30 turn barrr, 42 turn castle, 10 turn swordfish, 7 turn gaudy pirate.

Day 0: Introduction
Coming off a 2/672 moxie run, and now having aria and SHC, I wanted to try and do a 2-day muscle run. I'd been talking about it in the DitR II thread, saying that the decreased turngen from SHC and the turncount from having to open the gallery were entirely surmountable obstacles, so I figured it was time to walk the walk.

I also wanted to try for a speed run that was a little more aggressive in its goals and closer to what real speedrunners do; specifically, hit ASCII as my first semi-rare and pull ore. Pulling ore is a pretty significant hit to turngen, both because of the pulls used and because I can't make milk until day 2, but I thought that this would be surmountable also.

As it turned out, this run taught me quite a bit, and pointed out several skills that I really want before trying again. Full analysis at the end.

Nothing really exciting here, except for the 2 jek belts (thanks Kevlar and tiv!). In hindsight, I don't think these were worth the pull; next run I'll be donating for Jrs and saving precious pulls on day 1. The item drop came in handy, but it really hurt my flexibility.

Opened my rations and lunchboxes and got minimum booze yields. Ugh; this hurts turngen a little as well. Also, my tower is pretty unpleasant: wussiness, NG, meat vortex, pygmy blowgun, leftovers, black pepper -- looking like 2 lock pulls and clovering for leftovers, but it could easily cost another for the vortex. On the bright side, the hermit has 3 clovers today, yay!

Takes me 10 turns to find another adding machine, and had a bit of bad luck in that I didn't collect enough parts to farm another scroll. Once I got the adding machine, however, I ran into another problem -- I don't have hero, and my moxie is way lower than I'm used to (my speedruns have all been moxie runs), so getting ML up to the point where I can make all my scrolls on 2 adding machines means I'm also getting hit pretty hard. I voluntarily get beat up to squeeze out another add.

On the puttied machine, noodles only lasted the minimum number of rounds. I got lucky and the machine missed on the last round, but I had turned off some of my ML, and killed the machine with a 334+334, leaving me one add short of getting a fourth 31337 scroll. With the three that I have, though, I'll be able to buy out the hermit, so a fourth only gets me about 3 turns' worth of savings (1.5 clovers). Not worth trying to hunt down another adding machine, even if I collect enough parts to farm a fifth scroll. Off to the barrr.

Use up remaining runaways at the spooky forest attempting to open the temple, then mix my nightcap and overdrink.

Day 1 assessment: had some fairly bad RNG and some pretty good RNG, but overall the day was solid. I estimated 270.5 turns generated, and got 274 instead; my turncount estimation is running about 5 lower than plan, which is great news, as I planned for 630. (To be honest, I actually thought I was running 20 lower than plan, and spent a fair bit of time replanning day 2 consumables to see if I could lower turncount further. In the end, I decided to play it by ear, which was a good decision, because I completely forgot that I hadn't yet finished the crypt, and would need about 15 more adventures.)

A few other minor mistakes -- I never did use my scope buff, and I should have used it in conjunction with my tea party buff to get into the bedroom before the crypt. Also, once I picked up a fedora in the orc chasm, I should have gone to the tea party then, to get that familiar weight on my fairies. Still, this isn't terrible -- I pick up the buff at the end of the day, so will get a goodly portion of the benefit first thing tomorrow.

First few turns through the giant's castle go well - pick up all the quest items and two of the three black candles. Haven't seen the first wheel, though, which makes me a little nervous. As soon as my nose clears, I go finish the goatlet. The trapzor's reward is nice, but not having to buy skills in-run (I took empathy, but nothing else) and being a muscle class (fewer shieldbutts) has really cut down on my meat needs -- I have quite a comfortable cushion.

I didn't know it at the time, but I think this was probably the mistake that cost me the run. With the giant's castle taking close to 20 more turns than expected and the pirate ship taking another 10, I really should have thrown my diet out the window and completely replanned, probably doing something like pulling some more lunchboxes and doing the DD for a key. I don't know if it would have saved the run, but I really didn't think about it until too late.

Looking back, I'm pretty annoyed at myself -- the whole reason I log turns spent in-run is so that I can know whether the run is going as planned or if I need to re-plan. Anyway....

Things I learned
  • It's not that easy to hit level 9 in time for ASCII; I need to look into a way to make crisis more viable. Solution here is Hero and Saucy Salve, plus empathy for early familiar weight boost. Meat in the early game might be tough, but I think I should have enough to run empathy/ur-kel's/leash.
  • Pulling jek belts gets a big item boost, but the pulls are too valuable for that, and I need the +stat boost from Mr.A's to get into the bedroom. Next run I'll be donating for those.
  • Having more +item drop would be a good thing. I'll be grabbing Phat Loot and Observatiogn before my next 2-day muscle attempt, plus a hound, which should make up all the different between Jr's and jek belts.
  • More stats, more stats, more stats. I want to grab Torso Awargness, so that I can buy Armorcraftiness in-run and wear a hippo poncho from level 8 onwards.
  • I do a fair amount of crafting in-run, so grabbing Inigo's would be a good idea to save 5-10 turns where I'm not gaining any stats.
  • It's only valuable to track turns spent in-run if you're going to take advantage of that and re-plan. Revisit your plans earlier; if you wait, it might be too late.
