Well, my first ever attempt at Softcore. A whole lot of credit goes to my clannies, especially NotJim, who really helped me out with planning, pull strategy, differences from Hardcore and so on.

I didn't win the contest - I know Kaindragoon got 611 for a start - but it was the fastest NS13 SC SCNP run ever :) I'm pretty happy with that!

Goal: A 2 day Softcore run.

Notes
Didn't make use of gongs/absinthe at all. In the case of the former, it feels so painful switching to the Llama vs the tuned bander that I just didn't want to.
Got a little absinthe, but not nearly as much as I would normally in HC, and I didn't even actually use it.


Mistakes:
- Missed the ASCII semirare.
- didn't use all my Inigos casts on day 1, making day 2 crafting more awkward than it needed to be - though, at least for (non-moxie) SC, the casts of Inigo's allowed are pretty generous.
- had on the trail active when I found first dairy goat, cost me dear.
- forgot/misunderstood how the stocking mimic worked. VERY stupid.
- neglected to use UPCs for half of Nuns.
- got one too few Ratchets, misunderstanding how a pulled one worked.


What went right:
- Judged day 2 pulls quite well. Had enough slack to shift gears near the end and decide to pull star hat + weapon rather than making them (was quite proud of this - felt very softcorey ;) ).
- Judged levelling near perfectly. Hit L13 just as I finished off Ed + Wiez.
- Pull choices were all solid I think, though I owe that more to !Jim than myself!


Impressions on Softcore, for a first timer:
I had a lot of trouble choosing between all the cool accessories I had. (Scarf, CARNIVORE, Vivala Mask, Navel Ring, Mr A Jnr, Stinky Cheese Eye). I was trying to VCrisis, but it seemed awfully hard to NOT hit monsters with regular attacks, as a muscle class with V Mask, Katana and Pilgrim shield (none of which I wanted to drop). Being Moxie, or having a lot of extra ML (gown) would have helped here.

Combat and resource management were extremely easy, compared to bleeding edge hardcore (note that I'm not claiming to be bleeding edge softcore, by any means!), and that I didn't have a gown or sticks (I don't own them, and they were banned for this contest anyway). Combat was like having a Bunker, with the added bonus of lots of free MP every turn.
Katana MP was enough to power pretty much any buff I wanted, whenever I wanted it. I didn't have an awful lot of meat, but I really didn't need it.

Early levels were really nice - rations and lunchbox food were almost like the good old NS11 days of consuming your path rewards to skip the early levels.

Overall, it was a fun experience - very much more so than I expected. Not getting to (HC) perm a skill at the end is disappointing though - feels like I've done a run for nothing.

Day 1 wasn't too bad (5.45 hours), but Day 2 took a ridiculous amount of time - I think 11 hours, split into two sessions. Some of that is due to inexperience, but even so, it's a crazy amount. As much as I enjoyed a lot of it, I would be put off ever doing it again by the time alone - even HCNP pales in comparison.

Horrible mistake. My HC-trained mind wasn't, I think, really conscious of how the Mimic actually worked. I thought I'd get him out for a few turns, hope for a Polka Pop or two for L12. That in itself was probably a bad idea in SC, considering all the Banderstats I'd be giving up. What was far worse was a) not realising that Mimic drops relied on having his own equipment, b) Mafia auto-equipping the LBoF, and c) spending more than 40 advs with him out, wondering why I hadn't had any drops.

Yes, I just used a Cocoabo for 40+ advs in a contest.

If I had to pick one single mistake that lost me the contest, this would be it. I'd like to claim I was tired and drunk at this point, but that wasn't until later :D

Here I make perhaps my first real Softcore strategy decision. I had planned to olfact Astronomers and build the star stuff, as I would in HC - but now I think:
1 - pulls look free, from the easy tower. I might need one or two for turngen, though I have adv.cock ingredients and a cast of Inigo's in hand.
2 - turns look ok. I'm not sure I can finish, but I think I can - and I already have a target - 611. So in terms of the contest, it doesn't matter if I don't finish, once I've gone over 611. So I only need to guarantee turngen to 611.
3 - I have pretty much exactly what I need for a Star Key, and basically nothing left over.
4 - Pulling the star hat+weapon will save quite a few turns.

So I do. Correct decision I believe, and more importantly, a genuine softcore-mindset adjustment to circumstance.

Stupid mistake. Forgot to equip my Sniffsword+UPCs for the first 12 advs or so. Given that, it seemed pretty quick.

Had a nasty moment at the end - was being very careful not to screw up the putty trick. Putty on the penultimate adventure. Have carefully noted meat recovered on the last few adventures - and Mafia reports the amount remaining being bang in the middle!
I can't risk not finishing with the puttyNun, so I suck up a wasted adventure by switching off the monkey and sniff sword, killing one more bandit for about half the remaining meat, then switching them back and having way overkill for the puttyNun. Better safe than sorry.
