Effovex's DitR3 2/579 AT (29 skills)

Post by Effovex » Wed Nov 03, 2010 10:47 pm

This is the part where I would normally explain my plan for the run, but unlike my previous softcore attempts where I obsessed for days on end and planned my runs nearly turn by turn, this run I didn't have a whole lot of free time and my planning basically consisted of checking if I could generate enough turns if eating 6 key pies, where "enough" was 600-ish. I checked the numbers for both possible rations splits, figured out it had no real impact on turn generation, and ascended. Apart from that, I decided I didn't want to waste a clover on a R&R legend since it was only a one clover day and, as I wasn't planning on puttying ASCII, didn't want to risk facing a 0-clover day and being short on the next day. So I decided to pull a Jew Hat, but I think I might have been able to manage with just a regular accordion; MP was rarely a problem. I'm ascending as an AT so I can buy Moxious Madrigal and Polka of Plenty in-run. I make sure I have everything in stock, discard 3 karma, and ascend. HCNP Sauceror lead-in means I get 5 pork elf gems and a stainless steel scarf from Toot. I donate 10$ for a Mr. A which I'll turn into a Jr. later on.

Then I look into my telescope and see this:

Outer gate: locked gate (Locks Like the Raven/Black No. 2)
Tower Guardian #1: endangered inflatable white tiger (pygmy blowgun)
Tower Guardian #2: giant fried egg (black pepper)
Tower Guardian #3: flaming samurai (frigid ninja stars)
Tower Guardian #4: fancy bath slug (fancy bath salts)
Tower Guardian #5: big meat golem (meat vortex)
Tower Guardian #6: giant bee (tropical orchid)

That is not too bad at all. The present under the tree is a crimbo cookbook, which I use and probably should have sold, because I completely forgot I had it for the rest of the run. I think I used one candy at the end of the run.

[1-2] Guild Challenge [0,0,0]
     #> Turn [2] pulled 1 stinky cheese eye
[3-11] Mysticality Vacation [0,13,0]
First thing I do is I put on the Mr. A and do the guild challenges to open the beach. Then I fish to get the stuff I need from the hermit - dinghy planks, sweet rims, clover. Then I cast MMM, put on the jew hat and head on to the beach to vacation a bit, but not before making my first mistake: I drink a schnapps right before vacationing. I do some mys vacations because I think I might get lucky and do all my shoring right away, but I don't have enough money to do that anyway. I fact, I run out of money to buy the detuned radio. So I just vacation thrice, run out of money, and realize I wasted 9 turns of delicious crimbo spirit. I'll come back to the beach in 35 turns to get my orchid.

     -> Turn [12] Baby Bugged Bugbear
     &> 3 / 3 free retreats
     => Level 3 (Turn 12)! (6/8/9)
     => Level 4 (Turn 17)! (8/10/13)
I only summon one sugar shirt, because I want more stickers. I'll make one shield and use it for the whole run, for bander runaways and some punctual uses. I overfeed the boulder, put on the sugar shield, and red ray something in the outskirts, then put on a bugbear with the balaclava and get the encryption key in 7 turns. I start running Aria, leash and springy fusilli right at the beginning and they pretty much never come off the whole run.

     +> [27] Got razor-sharp can lid
     -> Turn [31] Green Pixie
     &> 2 / 3 free retreats
Just getting my mosquito and trying to open the manor; I don't get it right away and decide I'll come back later. Whenever I run away, I entangling noodles first then sing a bit to gain CoT MP to fuel my buffs.

Code: Select all

     +> [33] Got sonar-in-a-biscuit

I went to get a sonar; I put a pet rock in the CoT for the stench resistance.

HUUUGE mistake here. I yellow ray a fricking Goblin girl. I then realize that the shore is almost up and I should have used that yellow ray on a hippy because how else am I going to drink? Yeah, good job.

     +> [46] Got Boss Bat bandana

     -> Turn [43] Knob Goblin Organ Grinder
Going for the boss bat; I switch to the mimic for a few turns to try and get polka pops, then to the grinder after 3 bodyguards because I'd like a bodyguard pie for my filler.

     -> Turn [48] Stocking Mimic
     &> 3 / 8 free retreats
     => Level 6 (Turn 57)! (17/18/29)
I don't know if you're a pro at deciphering those parsed logs, but that looks like a ton of gibberish to me. I like using the organ grinder in the billiards room because he can kill chalkdust wraiths, which I have trouble with when I have a pool queue equipped. Well, I wouldn't have had a problem if I had remembered my first perm was chronic indigestion, but I keep forgetting about that skill. Still, lvl 6 was almost up and I wanted to eat as much food as possible at the same time to maximize milk of magnesium (although I then realized with spice melange I had more than 15 fullness anyway so it was mostly irrelevant). I again used mimic a bit after getting my badass pie; I ran away from the wraiths, and got pretty unlucky on the free runaways. I was running smooth movements and sonata, but it still took a while for the pool adventure to show up, and when it did my chalk had run out. I skipped the adventure, put chalk on and got it again right away, so no harm done.

[62-66] Dark Heart of the Woods [58,63,152]
     +> [64] Got llama lama gong
     -> Turn [63] Llama Lama
I pull a RoC, realize I can't equip it yet, spend one turn with the llama and get a gong. I spend a few turns with the mimic, get a polka pop, then decide I'll finish the woods later when I have more -NC and free runaways.

Code: Select all

     o> Ate 1 fortune cookie (1 adventures gained) [0,0,0]
[72-74] Moxie Vacation [0,0,18]
     -> Turn [74] Slimeling

Hahaha gigantic mistake here, I click the treasury instead of the kitchen. I was super baffled: why didn't I get the guardsman? Did mafia screw up my semi-rare number? Then I realize I'm at the wrong place. Well done! I think it's at this point I realize I'll run out of turns before yellow ray is up and I need the hippy outfit if I want to have a shot. I was fairly certain my run was going to fail at this point.

Code: Select all

[75-84] Hippy Camp [72,71,228]

     #> Turn [84] pulled 1 filthy corduroys

I try to get the hippy outfit the hard way and realize the drop chances are pretty damn low. I get one piece and pull the other.

Code: Select all

[85-91] Pirate Cove [50,54,114]
     +> [87] Got swashbuckling pants
     +> [89] Got bottle of rum
     +> [91] Got eyepatch, stuffed shoulder parrot
     #> Turn [91] pulled 1 ninja pirate zombie robot head
I go for the pirate to get some drinks and open them up. Pull a NPZR head to finish the outfit and make a clockwork maid, but I don't have the stats to wear me swashbuckling getup yet.

Code: Select all

[92-94] Haunted Bathroom [42,48,113]
     +> [94] Got fancy bath salts
     => Level 7 (Turn 94)! (24/25/40)
I'm not sure why I decided to go there at this point, I guess I figured I needed to level a bit so why not get a tower item at the same time?

Code: Select all

[95-104] Haunted Bedroom [84,184,293]
     +> [96] Got Lord Spookyraven's spectacles
With moxious madrigal and telescope buff I can get in the bedroom with some turns to spare. I pick combats every time I can and get a ton of stats, but neither ballroom adventure.

Code: Select all

[105-109] Barrrney's Barrr [36,35,129]
     +> [105] Got bottle of rum
     +> [109] Got bottle of rum, bottle of rum
Now I can wear the outfit, I go back to the bar to get some alcohol and waste MP. Basically, since I can't wear the CoT here and I'd rather not waste a pool buff on MP, I alternate between the barrr and places I can wear the CoT.

Code: Select all

     +> [119] Got Spooky Temple map
     +> [120] Got Spooky-Gro fertilizer
     +> [121] Got spooky sapling
Finally get the correct nightstand twice in a row, as usually happens, then olfact a dancer and get lucky with a dance card and quick quartet. I get a drink and go to the spooky forest with my bander to use some runaways in the spooky forest. I see a single combat and finish the forest having used only one runaway. Very nice.

Code: Select all

[122] Pirate Cove [0,0,18]
Forgot to put on the outfit. Then I decide to go somewhere else anyway

because after inigo's and ode, I'm a bit short on MP.

     o> Drank 1 mandarina colada (21 adventures gained) [0,19,32]
     => Level 8 (Turn 132)! (30/31/54)
I powerlevel a bit and get some extra dance cards for later. I decided to powerlevel to be certain to sniff instant Karma today. I realy wanted to hit level 9 without trouble. I chose to skip Curtains here; combats gave 60 substats with the ton of ML I was running, and Curtains gave 60 moxie, and I felt it was better to try to get more waltzers since I was getting as many substats. Dunno if that was the correct choice.

I just want to mention I didn't get a single good NC in my whole barrr. No booze, no stats, just the one where you can get rotgut or a fight. I got so lucky everywhere else it'd be bad to really complain too hard about it though.

     +> [176] Got divine cracker
[179-184] Defiled Alcove [75,55,182]
     +> [179] Got rusty grave robbing shovel
I felt the Cyrpt was super ultra long. I was at -20% NC and got every one of the choice NCs at least 5 times each. I puttied a hipster combat. Also I shouldn't have run hipster here, since there are no superlikelies (I think). Mimic probably would have been best. At the very least I think I should have avoided using hipster after getting the choice NC in each
zone; I think once you get the choice NC the delay is up and the boss NC becomes as likely as the choice NC. Maybe I'm wrong about that though. Anyway, Hipster would have been better in the airship, but I don't think I would have been able to get all my hipster combats had I not used it here.

Super duper ultra fast friars' gate. I use some bander runaways here, but I barely get any combats. I don't get hot wings nor a Ruby W . Oops! I have to backfarm hotwings, but I get a hot wings NC almost right away. I ended up pulling the WAND since I didn't get the W. Lame.

Orc Chasm was really bad. I just got a ton of irrelevant combats and barely anything that drops scrolls. I gave a flaming troll the stink eye

I get a SGEEA from the first combat I meet, clear my nose of the mop pirate, and olfact a quiet healer two turns later. I get a few SGEEAs there, but not as many as I would want. I make a serum of sarcasm, then start to kill puttied hipster combats, but then after like two fights I forget to putty so it was a bit of a waste. I get the food blessing for goats tomorrow, make sure to put on my diaper and clockwork maid, and drink a jar of squeeze.

END OF DAY 1.

===Day 2===
Adventure count at day start: 91
Current meat: 11477
So at the beginning of day 2 I was feeling fairly confident. 2 clovers at the hermit, I made it to level 10 and have most of the quests completed. My plan for early in the day is to adventure in the airship for a few adventures to get some SGEEAs, to use my free mining to get the ore I need, which I'm guaranteed to get without spending a turn because I hit the right ore on my fifth dig yesterday, and then to use a SGEEA, olfact a dairy goat, and get my goat cheese as quickly as possible. I don't intend to open the HITS. Whenever I don't need to activate the GAP, I will wear the diaper to charge the stinky eye without using an accessory slot.

     +> [259] Got Plastic Wrap Immateria
     +> [260] Got S.O.C.K.
So I wanted to get some extra SGEEAs, but then I finished the quest almost immediately. Oh well, hopefully my 3 extra SGEEAs (after clearing my nose for the goatlet) will be enough, which I think it will be with just some rearranging.

I'm in your goatlet, stealing your cheese. I hit a drunk goat, then a dairy goat which I olfact. I was expecting to stinky cheese the sabre-toothed goat, but I hit 4 dairy goats in a row before getting toothy. I figure it's better to just use a free runaway at this point, and finish the quest on the next turn. Pet rock in the crown to finish the quest; I think it took 8 turns overall, including clearing the rocks. Not that impressive, that's about my average in hardcore anyway.

Takes a while to get the wheel. Boosts my muscle by a ton. I notice a bit later that I've got a warm subject gift certificate which I could use for a goth t-shirt; I probably missed like 25 mainstats from not noticing right away. OMG. I run away from the procrastination giant because I'm dumb. I didn't want to get cunctatitis, but DPN removes that, so that's a runaway wasted on a monster that gives good stats.

I use up some tangles of rat tails and discover 2 things: 1) tomb rat kings can be flyered again. 2) They're hella tough. Maybe I shouldn't have flyered them. Anyway, it takes way longer than expected to get my tomb ratchets. I get a ton of tomb asps that always win initiative and poison me and wish I had a popper or other banisher left; sadly, all my rare divine summons are champagne flutes today.

Pretty nice day 1; you have most if not all of the relevant gear and it's pretty clear you know how to use it :). Some comments:

- I don't think YR'ing the harem girl was that big of a mistake; for a <600 run you could probably have gotten by on drinking swill (12 fewer adventures than SHC, so costs you 1 additional air pull on day 2). Obviously, if you'd run out of adventures before hitting karma, that'd be bad. In any case, I like the way you looked ahead and saw that you needed the hippy outfit, and worked around the change in plans. Very nice work.

- Run away more aggressively early. I'd recommend running away even at 30% in the starter areas (forest, pantry, outskirts), and maybe even from tavern rats if you don't get kings.

- Perm a spell, and those chalkdust wraiths will be easy-peasy. Or consider using dragon stickers and shieldbutting.

- Your crypt was actually about right, maybe even a little faster than expected; I usually budget 46 turns for it, and you did it in 43. I believe that the boss is a scheduled adventure with the condition of having to get the normal noncombat first, in which case the right play is to not run the hipster until you get the choice (since you don't know what your delay is and hipster can override the choice), then run the hipster until you get the boss (since he can't override the scheduled adventure, so every free fight acts as a runaway).

- You were getting 60 mainstat from the ballroom combats? That seems like an awful lot. How much ML were you running? I usually only expect to get aorund 40-45 from the ballroom.

I was getting 60 substats, or 30 mainstat. Not quite as good, but a regular combat also gives a shot at a dance card, which I wanted to hoard for later. Basically, Curtains wasn't a whole lot better than a regular combat and while it made me level faster, it also would have made my secondary stats lag more, which I had a few problems with. I didn't feel it was worth a turn at that point.

Chalkdust wraiths: well, I would have permed a spell on my lead-in, but that would have put me over the limit. Besides, I have chronic indigestion which should deal decent damage (since it's fire-aligned), although I actually ate just a bit later so indigestion wouldn't have been that good.

It is true that I should run away more early and less later; I do run away pretty aggressively, just not always in the right places. I ran away a lot in the pantry and the forest, but I spent combats in the outskirts to level (with the amount of ML I was running, I don't think it was a huge deal, but I agree with you nonetheless I need to budget my runaways better).

I wanted to keep tavern until I could have a metric ton of ML for rat kings, so I didn't want to do it early, meaning no swills. I didn't do the goblin king until much later anyway so reversing the rays would have been much, much smarter.

BTW, I'm trying to edit in my day 2 but I only get a blank page. I'll try posting it in a new post.

Edit: the TM in Breathetastic was being converted into weird symbols which prevented me from posting the logs until I deleted them. Weird.

I start running Aria, leash and springy fusilli right at the beginning and they pretty much never come off the whole run.
Did you actually get the jump much later on in the run? Sometimes I run fusilli for a little bit, then I realize I'm not getting the jump anyway so I stop wasting MP on it.
I felt the Cyrpt was super ultra long. I was at -20% NC and got every one of the choice NCs at least 5 times each. I puttied a hipster combat. Also I shouldn't have run hipster here, since there are no superlikelies (I think). Mimic probably would have been best. At the very least I think I should have avoided using hipster after getting the choice NC in each zone; I think once you get the choice NC the delay is up and the boss NC becomes as likely as the choice NC. Maybe I'm wrong about that though. Anyway, Hipster would have been better in the airship, but I don't think I would have been able to get all my hipster combats had I not used it here.
There's a floor plus delay before you can get the superlikely boss adventure, which also depends on getting the normal noncombat first. This is one of the best places to use the hipster, at least once you're this far into the run (pantry, outskirts, and first 5 turns in the spooky forest are good earlier targets). With +20% noncombat, it should take 3 turns on average to get a noncombat, which is less than the 5 turn floor that you get even if delay is 0 for the zone. Therefore, you should run the hipster the whole time.

On another note, once you get the noncombat in a zone once, all of that +noncombat doesn't really help too much. It does help slightly, since there's a 2 turn range where the superlikely is possible but not guaranteed, and getting the regular noncombat and declining it gives you another roll for the superlikely.
I realize I don't have enough myst to wear the war outfit.
When you don't have enough myst for pirate fledges, this is likely to follow.
Anyway, I activate the pants for +500 DA, then lose the ability when I put on the frat outfit to get the next part of the quest. I activat the pants again and do the rest of the quest without visiting Yosarian until I'm done. LESSON LEARNED.
Do you mean without switching into the outfit to talk to him? You can talk to him without having an outfit on and he will still give you a message that mafia keys in on for color-tracking stuff. I guess maybe it's possible without visiting him at all, I've never done that though.

I hadn't really thought of this; looking at the raw logs, I seem to be getting the jump most of the time - I'd estimate over 50%? I wasn't always running CARNIVORE and Scarf (usually just Scarf, because it's hard to have two free accessory slots), but still my ML was usually 60+ in the second half of the run, which now you mention it, should make it fairly difficult to get the jump. Juju gives 30%, fusilli 40%, and I've got nothing else; maybe because I wasn't wearing a gown or using a bugbear for a lot of the run? I usually could pickpocket, though I forgot a bit too often, this is something I have to watch for. I definitely think fusilli was worth running (plus I had a ton of meat at the end of the run, so I could have run a few more buffs had I permed any).

Man I guess everything I thought I knew about the cyrpt was wrong. Good to know, and glad I used the hipster. I think the cyrpt is the poster child for everything that's wrong with delay's obscurity. It feels like it should go so, so much faster, but apparently I was under average.

Really? That seems to contradict my experience, but maybe that's something that has changed since I had tried it initially and I never tried again. Since I'm usually HC the outfit switching is just a minor annoyance. And yeah, you can do it without talking to him and mafia will still color-code the message when you have to use the magnet. It just won't tell you if the monster you're fighting is the right monster for that zone, but I just double-checked on the wiki.

I do this all the time. As soon as I get the war started, I go pick up the magnet, flyers, and talk to the guy at the beach, then change back to my main outfit. Mafia still color-codes everything perfectly; all you have to do is talk to him between items (out of uniform, even) to move to the next one...

You don't need to talk to the guy at the beach before getting barrels for him. I never do.
