Let me first preface this log by saying this was not meant to be a log to follow turn by turn (but rather as a general example on the whole). But I wanted to put up something for people to get a look at and start thinking about doing serious runs. There was *a lot* of room for improvement and I wasn't taking this run seriously as you can tell in spots (ran away from strange stuff you shouldn't run from, etc). But that said I hope it gets some people thinking about things to pull/do/etc in the early days of AoB so that we can see some good low skill AoB competition.

For future 3 day runs I don't see any reason why really low 500 turn counts aren't possible. But I would encourage you to do some 2 days (even failed 2 days are good!) rather than try to do as low a turn count 3 day stunt.

I started this run with 4+1 AoB skills. I took hot dogs/astral belt and went Wombat moon sign.
I went Feasting 5>Shouting 9>Fighting 3 (not in that order)

It was more like Shouting 5>Feasting 5>Shouting 4>Fighting 3 (the last 3 fighting were for lack of anything better) I skipped banishing shout since it was so late and since I had vmask + stinkeye I had already banished most everything I wanted to rather than delay those quests until late.

Skills
My thoughts as far as skill points go is basically get solitude as fast as possible so you can and also make sure you can use Song of the Glorious Lunch before eating anything

I'm not a huge fan of cleave, it's not a bad skill but with a lot of ML running it's not autohit. Bellow seems much more effective from levels 6-7+ and the improved bellow with stun is fabulous!

Early on Solitude (and to some degree Banishing shout) is probably the valuable skill for softcore players in Boris, keep this in mind. Accompaniment & Song of Battle are pretty close up there as well. The ML skills start getting more attention once you start off with more base skills 7-10+.

Combat for me is generally Blue Balls>Bellow>Axeing(or Orange Agent early on if you still can't hit after a bellow)>Cup(heal)>Axeing(or Agent) until dead.
It will be pretty much that way through the whole run. The more ML you are running the more you are going to spend on healing and mp in the early game.

Part of my rationale in pulls is that in AoB +item is severely limited. So anything I can pull that is dependent on item drop or isn't viable via yellow ray I'm just going to pull to make my life easier.

You'll notice there is tons of stuff that is maybe/maybe-not optimal in that pull list. The big thing to consider though in softcore and this applies not just to Avatar of Boris is that your pulls are very very valuable. They are what make softcore and hardcore different. How you value them is quite a lot of how well you do in softcore. If you value your pulls at a very high value 60 can be considered a lot. If you're used to just squeaking by in a normal 3 day run with 60 pulls it may not feel like many but let me tell you once you cut out some of your less valuable pulls (you know you have some just admit it ;-) ) you'll find 60 can be quite a lot.

Also please don't be afraid of things like rations/blank out/whatever other expensive item. It can almost always be substituted with some other item (generally a clover). That may sound easier said than done, but it's generally true. My pull of a rations may really only save lets be generous and say 10 turns over a pull of a clover or some other turn gen pull.

If you need more turn gen feel free to pull a bunch of milk of mags 10 adventures for 1 pull is a pretty good ratio, but the idea is always we want to reduce turn gen pulls in favor of pulls that help us lower turn count. Don't be afraid to fail to make day count in trying to lower your turn count. You're going to learn from your failures. My first 2 day AoB run was a mess and a failure, but I learned how to correct it and my second attempt was successful. Break out of your comfort zone and try aiming to generate 20-30 less than your best run and aim to cut your turns to match. I think you'll find when you're forced to work in tighter boundaries you'll find a way to make it work (maybe not the first time but eventually).

Some of the worst offending items (maybe) in my pull list are things like pulling 3 wines/3 war outfit pieces/3 pirate outfit pieces/etc. Remember you have 60 pulls! These pulls might not save as much as a clover or a bottle of blank-out or whatever else might but this should give you an idea how much flexibility we have in softcore! You don't have this much flexibility in a 2 day run though so think about why you pull what you pull and how many it turns it is really saving!

Starting your run off right
I think most people see that Wombat is a pretty good choice since we can equip shirts. So that's what most people are doing. Pulling a dictionary gives you enough meat for a bus pass/buying PoO/Torso/Crumhorn on turn 0. You can set the MCD immediately, and if you go female you can buy handsome potions that give +6ml (whee!)

I pulled a single groose grease for stats (not adventures). Don't go and pull 3 of them, your pulls on day 1 are more precious than other days.

Don't be afraid to bank turns for the next day if you run out of things to do because you are waiting on more pulls.

Don't play turns just because you have them!!

Cane-mail + astral belt + mcd + npzr ml is a lot of ML to try to handle with only a few Boris skills and you are going to spend a lot on healing. Taking an astral shirt is not a bad option and it makes your life simpler!

Misc other thoughts/notes
Banishing/Copying is extra powerful in Boris since we lack olfaction. The vmask was pulled basically just for banishing 3x
Legion Loathing Knife you want to wear the necktie as much as possible, but even if you don't the main reason for pulling it is the screwdriver which allows you to untinker the dictionary which saves you from getting it from degrassi knoll which is a hell hole (this could be moved to day 2s pulls if needed)
Legendary Beat I'm using it day 2&3 at fcle and filthworms. Pulling more peppermint crooks for filthworms and an extra eyedrops for the fcle is probably better, but this is lazier :)
I took tarts as my 3rd semi rare.. I didn't need the turn gen at all, if you do grab them. I'm just a sucker for tasty tarts :)

This is great, and in a very useful format.

I just realized late last night after completing my day 1 (in a very similar skills situation) that I probably should have gone to the shore for turns [1-3], because I never managed to get there with all of the Crimbo buffs running. Is there a compelling reason not to get the shore counter started immediately (say, something to do with the SR counter), or did you just have so much flexibility that you picked it up (I see your first vacation at 124, in the middle of the Cyrpt) whenever it fit in with buffs?

Also, I find that an occasional shot of Feed (vampire fangs) make HP and MP much easier to maintain at +60ML, (especially on humanoids!) but aside from that my combats look almost exactly like yours. Agent Orange has saved me on about one combat in five, which tells me I'm just about right for ML, at least for levels 1-8. (And my last three runs I've ended up at about +40,000 meat, so Agent Orange is certainly affordable...)

Are you vamping out at the end of each day? I didn't see it in the logs, but two runs in a row now I've used it on day 1 a bit earlier than that to hit the next level and get another skill point...

Yeah that run I actually probably almost waited to long to do it. I would generally try to fit it in between booze crimbo buff running out and eating crimbo food. So around turn 50ish? You want to ideally wait as long as possible to shore since the stats scale, but as long as you could fit it in comfortably on turn 0 before doing anything else and still make all your goals of eating with song + solitude in time to do -com stuff you could do that. It's not ideal but in a 3 day you have that kind of flexibility :)

Yeah I guess the log doesn't show it. I use it right at the end of day 1 basically. Then on day 2 generally in the push from 9>10. And day 3 the push from 11>12. At least that's how I break my days up personally.

First off, thanks for posting this log.

I'm hoping to get a two day run in before the path is over.

The only spleen I saw was a grease on day one and a slimy alveolus on day three. Are astral hot dogs really that great? And at what point should I switch from energy drinks to hot dogs? (Right now I wouldn't make day count without the energy drinks.)

And Thanks for the reminder to Vamp Out. I only recently got my fangs, and didn't even realize vamping out was useful (other than black hearts).

Thats all I used for spleen.

The alveolus was me being sloppy with flyering so I pulled that to help finish :-/ . Not that an alveolus is a bad pull, but yet another reason not to verbatim copy me. There were a few ways I could have handled the situation. One was pull a bricko airship to flyer and runaway from as many times as necessary (I didn't have one in Hangks). Another and the way I chose was to look at my stats and see that it was likely I would need at least some stats to make 13 after the war was finished an airship would have only handled the one quest not the stats. So alveolus + a few turns in the gallery gave me enough to finish flyering and then some turns on the battlefield. It worked out perfectly that I hit level 13 killing the war boss :)

Astral hot dogs are like clovers you can eat, while they don't give as many turns as AED's they still give a bunch and they cut a fair number. Also unless you are pulling a mojo filter (maybe you are) you are probably not getting max adventures from them as it is. I would say give hot dogs a shot on a run so you can see how awesome they are and pull a borrowed time or something to make up the difference.

But I think you'll see that even if you followed my consumption plan to the letter of how I did it, you'd could generate as many turns as necessary to finish. You'll see that I drank basically crap on day 2 and day 3 I had a ton of fullness to fill that I only did so I wouldn't lose it after prism break. In fact that 3rd semi-rare of tarts was just because in a serious run I would have just skipped that SR in all likelyhood.

I became a believer in Hot dogs when they vaulted me from lvl5 to two turns away from lvl6 on day 1, and let me hit a lot of other marks (stomach of steel, the boris stomach bonus, etc.)

I couldn't tell what you used banish on. I keep forgetting to use my one, let alone pulling the v-mask to have two. Can you banish both other lichees in the crypt, then either both other goats, or the fcle guys? what would you banish on day 3? (Course that question is only relevant until banishing attack comes into play)


Did you not level up Clancy or grab his lute? I've been using some of my runaways in the bar room (and then fighting the ghost miners since i need combat stats at that point anyway). Seems it takes 6 turns in his zones to get the level, and you need the first 2 to get lute for 5 x fairy weight Clancy.

Yeah day 1 banishes in the cyrpt to get the dirty old lihc, day 2 for the goatlet, day 3 amc gremlin + either a non-blur in the oasis (to save on the drum machine pull) or a non bob racecar. Though both of those are semi marginal. Maybe fcle (chatty + barrnacle?) if you push goats to day 3 or you have banishing shout. Or if you'd rather pull and 8-bit magazine you can banish the fleaman/medusa (though I personally think you have enough room consumption wise for all the pies). Skipping the +5 stomach skill at some point and focusing on the ML from fighting + shouting tree might sway you towards 8-bit magazine over pies, but I'd personally wait until I was starting with maybe 8+ skills before going that route.

My current thinking with Clancy is to completely ignore him. A level 3 clancy with his lute is 40.72% item. Song of Accompaniment is basically equal to Song of Fortune in terms of +item drop so that. So you are spending 13 turns (you're getting stats for those adventures) so I'm just not sure that its worth it. It is also increasing his stat gain as a volley but that's pretty non significant. Maybe once you have enough skill points to have the passive +weight skill l might consider it. But my pull list is based on the assumption that your +item drop sucks and the only things you need it for are fcle and filthworms (and to some extent for evil eyes). Are you saving more than 13 turns in those 2 areas (including the higher stat gains of those monsters vs clancy zones)? Maybe

My thought on the lute is that having it can reduce swinginess in several zones and that hopefully you can get a few things you might have pulled to drop. I'm not sure it's worth the 13 turns either, but I'm also not sure that it's not. I'll be getting it for the time being because having no fairy is more stressful to me than those 13 turns.

It's still kind of hard to wrap my brain around the idea that 60 pulls is a whole lot. I can see how there is a bunch of flexibility there, but it still seems like I'm working hard to fit things in, especially on days 1 and 2.

I'll put my pull list for my last run (3/625) below. Our consumption plans were really different and I pulled a clockwork maid and an aviators cap. I overgenerated turns, but I wanted to finish with <14 fullness so I could do the legendary beat quest after I broke prism. There are also a few things I pulled to bail me out of a bad situation or correct an error, 2 mojo filters and a gummi trilobite among them. Note that I donated for Rain-doh so it's not on the list.

That's fine if it gives a comfort level. I know you well enough to know you at least understand the trade off that you're making. Some people might not understand why you would get it or skip it.

Is it possible for you to break that out per day? Also what were your semi-rares you took?

Thanks very much for this. One of my problems in general is creating turns for turn generation's sake even when my goal is a new low in turns. Your explanations of what to try and risk are really helpful, not just for Axecore.

That said I'm probably just going to turngen like crazy to get a 3-day axecore run, first. And this will make even more sense after a run or two.

And, of course, congrats on a strong run.
