TheBlackCat's mistake-filled 2/587 KOLHS AT

Greetings, forumers!

I'm TheBlackCat, a returning player to KoL. I previously submitted 3 logs for the DiTR4 contest, each failing to breach the 2 day SC mark. But never again! Armed with a bunch of new shinies (and powercreep) from my old investments and also ascension area revamps (more powercreep), TheBlackCat is ready for another attempt at breaking that barrier. If you've read the topic, you'd already know that I succeeded. ><

Anyway, this is a KOLHS run because of some contest thingy in the forums. Bein
g the lazy bum I am, I had to rely on the contest to motivate me to move out of my comfy aftercore routine in order to ascend. I put together a run planning sheet, and then prompty proceeded to ignore it as I jumped the gash.

Feedback is greatly appreciated. There are a ton of mistakes and a ton of places to improve, so much so that I don't think that I could possible spot them all myself. But I'm rambling again. One thing to note is that the run has to be mostly with the Evil Teddy Bear, so I just ran it whenever I would otherwise run a stat familiar. Historically my most used familiars tended to be fairies, so I figured that if I rotated my fairies around the Evil Teddy Bear would probably end up the most used. I ended up needing to powerlevel very little (2 or 3 cave bars around turn 395), so not having a stat familiar wasn't very significant.

I have most of the significant skills permed, but still have much much more to accumulate. IOTMs to note are: Buddy Bjorn, stinky cheese, spooky putty, Juju Mojo Mask, Mayo Clinic, a bunch of IOTM familiars, Source Terminal, Smith's Tome and Divine Favors. Mostly non-Standard stuff.

On a separate note, it appears that the solving the daily puzzle in the Witchess Set is breaking the log parser, so not all the information here is accurate. I'm not sure how to fix it, so I resorted to deleting parts of it from the session logs.

     -> Turn [0] Gelatinous Cubeling
     &> 1 / 1 free retreats
Regular pulls. I'm starting to get a bit overwhelmed by the sheer number of options available, but I just stick with the plan. Today's fax is going to be the writing desk, and I'm planning to Digitize it in order to skip the first floor of the Manor.

Code: Select all

     => Level 3 (Turn 40)! (8/8/10)
First mistake: forgot to heal up and started a fight. Tried to use a free GAP runaway, before realizing that I had my old sweatpants equipped. Oops.
Second mistake: Two writing desks appear, then I forget to Digitize the last one again. Oops. Looks like it going to be a while before the next one shows.
Third mistake: I screw up and olfact the wrong monster. What on earth am I going to do with a bunch of twisted pieces of wire?

Adventure a bit to unlock the guild, spending some of my hipster fights. Not sure if this is worth it, but I do want some AT skills that I haven't yet permed anyway. Plus MMJs and clocks would be nice later on. I remember that I should probably get in my yellow ray ASAP since I already delayed it effectively by 40 adventures due to the KOLHS, so on to the Boss Bat Lair..

Huh. I forget to stock milk of magnesium and accidentally pull a glass of goat's milk, so I just went ahead and crafted it myself. Not sure why my Rapid Prototyping didn't kick in. Or does it not work here? Its strange because it works for that other goat's milk later on. I think. :?

Adventuring in the Dark Neck because why not. As you can see I'm very organized with this run. Got my 3 hot wings too, with the Baby Gravy Fairy. I sort of recall that some of the quests were gated by the mosquito larva quest, so I go ahead to finish that with my hipster and GAP runaways. Also, my digitized writing desk is coming up soon, I think, so it would be nice to be able to use it to burn an adventure of delay().

Encountered my fourth writing desk here. I promptly forget to digitize it, again, but I don't realise this until much later. MUCH MUCH later. Anyway, back to the Friars quest.

I want to go the KGE route for the Goblin King, and my semirare is coming up very soon, so I quickly rush to get the encryption key. Pulled a Blank-Out because why not, I'm running out of runaways and my GAP hasn't really been cooperating. Semirare comes up just as I unlock it, so all's good. Potential crisis averted.

Now that that's done, let's move on to unlocking the Temple. But first, meatcar. Because why not? I have meat to spare anyway, since I pulled a facsimile dictionary. A bit wasteful, to be honest, that pull. I never spent more than 10k of that autosell meat, and mostly on Mayo Clinic purchases.

Blank-Out runs out just as I unlock the Temple. Err.. Goblin King? I cook the Knob cake, then realise that I spent an adventure on it too. Does Rapid Prototyping also not work on the Knob cake? Since I dont feel particularly motivated to fight the King now, I move on to the Crypt.

10 turn Nook. That's a little longer than I estimated it would take (~8.8 turns), but good enough I guess. Wasn't able to cap out item drops here. Perhaps in the future I should do the Goblin King earlier for the KGE Dispensary potions to help a little more. I eat a fortune cookie, then realise that I can't use Mayodiol without a spare fullness available. Distention pill to the rescue, although that costs me a pull. Also I go a bit on tilt here, so I don't really recall what went through my mind, but I misclick and end up fighting the Nook boss (I have a habit of lining all the bosses up and fighting them together).

Here comes my next biggest screw ups. First I fatfingered and accidentally Snokebombed a dirty old lihc. Later, I Digitize a modern zmobie, without realizing that I was only at 4 writing desks. That's probably the last straw for me. I unlock the Bonerdagon, then stop for a nap and a break. Hopefully my mind will be a bit clearer when I wake up.

So right now, it seems that my fax tomorrow is almost certainly going to be writing desk. I was originally planning to fax assassins, but I guess I can just pull the ninja gear. I don't really relish the idea of adventuring more, but I got to get in my second YR before I bank turns. So I guess I'll just work on whatever quest I have to do for now.

5 turn Goatlet, 23 turn Pirates. Pretty average. Spent a banish on the chatty pirate and another on the barnacle one. I fat-finger myself and accidentally hit Adventure again and waste an adventure in the F'c'le. Gotta remember to do the Daily Dungeon. I've gotten the first 2 scheduled drops from Cubeling, so this shouldn't take more than 4-5 adventures..

Woops, clean forgot about the KGE Dispensary potions. Ah well, at least I have it now. Should do this earlier in run next time. Day one complete! A ton of mistakes, to be sure. I would like to attribute most of them to unfamiliarity with IOTMs and KOLHS, and the quests in general, but part of it was also rushing through the ascension and not thinking through my decisions better. Also, I need to stop forgetting to use Digitize properly.

Lots of wasted resources today. I ended the day with 3 uncollected Hipster fights (was afraid of Hipster dominating the familiar use percentage), 4-5 familiar runaways, a bunch of possible GAP runaways, GAP charges, ALL FIVE COPIES from my spooky putty sheet, 2 KOLHS bell rings and some wasted adventures in fighting modern zmobies after the Crypt was cleared. Only discover later that Rapid Prototyping doesn't affect cooking adventures.

Fax Writing desk before I forget again and fax the assassins like I originally planned. Then pulled the ninja gear too, just in case. Also pull the ores for the Trapper. I always forget about the Lair revamp and ended up pulling a heavy metal thunderrr guitarrr. I guess it doesn't really make a difference.

Wow.. I didn't encounter a single Quiet Healer this Airship. I only managed to pick up a single SGEEA, so I'm going to have to be extra careful with my sniffing from here on out. I didn't think it would be worth getting the Airship chest just for the SGEEAs, but the noncombats were basically Mech fights anyway. I try to spend as many of my Hipster fights and runaways here as possible since I can't think of any other place I'd want to spend them right now.

I Digitize Baa'baa'bu'ran, which turns out to give me more stone wools than I could hope to use. I honestly think using Digitize on a free fight would've been much more worth it, in hindsight. Anyone knows whether Digitized Witchess pieces cost adventures to fight?

Got a bit of bad RNG with the gaudy pirate, both before and after sniffing. Perhaps I should just use a copy next time. Next step is the Hidden City. Again I remember thinking to myself something about optimality and delaying wander monsters, but eh, that's too fiddly to deal with and I don't have the spare mental capacity to juggle all of that at the moment. It's already 2AM local time.

Still on the trail of gaudy pirate, so I decide to arrow one of the dudes to increase the encounter rate frequency. Now that I think about it, the other way around might've been more efficient..

Finish up the Nuns, although it took longer than I expected. Did I forget to use some buff or something? I definitely forgot to use the Source Terminal buff and the KOLHS buff, so that could've shaved off ~1.5 turns at least I think. Sniff the surgeons and banish the orderlies with Snokebomb. Probably should have done this together with the Bowling Alley.

I realize with horror that my spooky putty wasn't squished properly when I reached the last bandit. No spooky putty sheet for copying to use the nuns trick. Fortunately, I picked up a sculpture from the Art Class on my first day. I'll pull a Blank-Out, to help conserve some turns in the upper chamber to try to make daycount.

Additional note to self: Its a good idea to save Shattering Punches for nuns.

And that's the end of the Battlefield. I'm still level 12, but the Big Wis-whatever should bring me nicely to level 13. A quick glance at my remaining adventures: 17 tells me that there is a very real chance that I won't be able to make 2 days, but I do have 4 more pulls and 1 more fullness to play around with. I decide to go to bed, and wake up early to finish off the ascension.

After some consultation with /clan (thanks, Slaw!), I decide that I'll just go for it. The worst case scenario would be pulling one of those turn generating consumables that don't take up diet space, like the essential tofu. Yojimbos_law suggested using a Twelve Night Energy, but I don't have enough meat to afford that.

Making daycount is going to be dependent on how well I do during the Adventurer Contests. I pull a little red jam to ensure one turn Hottest Adventurer, but I'm going to have to roll the dice on the Smartest Adventurer, since I should save that pull for an essential tofu, just in case.

I'm out of adventures, so its time to roll the dice on my last point of fullness. 6 adventures (+1 from Mayo)! That might be enough: 1 turn for Wall of Skin, 1 turn for Wall of Bones, hopefully 1 turn for Wall of Meat, 0 turns for Mirror, 1 turn for Shadow, 2 turns for NS. That's 6 adventures.

Fingers crossed..

Turn rundown finished!
..what awaited me in that chamber was not the NS, but the Principal, which only requires one adventure to fight! An epic ending to a rather poorly planned run, but finally at long last I've broken the 2-day SC barrier! :D

Reflections to come tomorrow, after I finish taking a good long look at my log.

Congrats! Daycount barrier breaking is the best.

A few random notes:

Rapid Prototyping should work on all fancy cooking. Maybe it is the AVL log parser getting confused? Sometimes it'll attribute a turn spent in your next adventure zone to some action that was actually free. I wonder if the mafia logs themselves would show the cooking didn't take turns?

The Black Forest has a base combat rate of 95%, so you only need +5% to minimize noncombats. However, that NC is forced if you have spent 4 or more turns there without seeing it. In SC that usually means 1 NC if you pull the galoshes, or 2 if you get the galoshes from the first NC with berries from the bjorn.

I like to do the filthworms out of uniform before starting the battlefield so I can flyer them and anything else that I want to do with big +item%, like the haunted cellar and pyramid. Just have to remember to turn the heart in once you've cleared through as a Frat Boy, which I've been known to forget.

Also, it turns out the NS only takes 1 turn. Her 2nd and 3rd form don't take turns.

Thanks for the quick response, ungawa!

After going back to the session logs, you're right. It was just a parsing bug with AscensionLogVisualiser, and the crafting adventures didn't actually take that turn. Good to know my karma wasn't wasted!

Regarding the Black Forest, what happened was that one of my Digitized writing desks appeared while I was adventuring in the Black Forest, which incremented the round counter for the NC, but not the Black Market exploration counter, causing me to encounter and waste a second NC.

For the filthworms, I was waiting for turns of On the Trail to run out so that I could olfact the rats and use the rest of my filthworm item buffs in the Pyramid. Turns out that 4 rat tangles pretty much means that you instantly get all the ratchets you want anyway, that was a pointless optimization.

The NS takes only 1 turn now? That's wasn't how it used to work. Probably got changed during the NS Tower revamp.

Learning Points (for now):
To Do Better Next Time:
1. Use runaways and free fights more liberally! Nonstandard softcore has an unbelievable number of runaways
2. Remember/Plan to use Digitize and badly romantic arrows and copies (ideally efficiently)
3. Don't forget to use KOLHS Saved By the Bell
4. Plan out usage of Snokebomb and other banishers instead of haphazardly using them whenever
5. Try to schedule sniffs as well, so as to be able to use more of them without interference; might prove hard to do with increased usage of runaways
6. Summon BRICKO bricks for more free fights. Perhaps even consider using these, Witchess fights and seals to charge JiTB?
7. Can't use Mayodiol when fullness is maxed out
8. Don't adventure in the Black Forest when a wandering monster is due to appear! Are there any other areas that work like this?
9. Remembering to familiar switch better. This is a toughie, due to how many familiars are competing for that slot time.
10. Do A-Boo Peak before doing Oil Peak for a chance of syringes

Things I didn't know/think about:
1. Use Shattering Punch to extend duration of buffs (Nuns meat buffs and eventually the 1 turn LT&T Gift Shop skills come to mind)
2. Pulverize Smith equipment to make Louder than Bombs near the end of the run (useful for Level 11 and 12 quests maybe)
3. The Intergnat demon name can be used once per day to save a pull on an antique machete or a star chart
4. KOLHS specific: +Stat items are much less useful when you're basically forced to powerlevel for 40 turns a day. Possibly consider running away from these fights too
5. Consider digitizing/copying Witchess pieces instead of getting more stone wool. The diminishing return of too many copies means that the fact that Witchess pieces don't take a turn to fight(?) is a huge advantage. Plus it helps with filling my diet with radishes.
6. Blackberries can be obtained from the Buddy Bjorn, so a blackberry galoshes pull saves slightly under 1 turn.
7. Portscan basically replaces a fight in any zone with a scaling monster - useful for delay() zones!

Things to find out:
1. Do Digitize fights and familiar wandering monsters overwrite each other?
2. Do Digitized Witchess pieces take a turn to fight? If so, what about BRICKO?
3. Is there any way currently for me to beat the Witchess King/Queen/Witch without robin eggs? That might help save a pull and give some nice stats.
4. What are insta-kills good for beside insurance in combat? Are there any specific monsters or zone where they are best used?
5. Are the KOLHS semirares worth getting over some other semirare if I'm planning to copy them? Gut feeling says no, but should at least give the theory a shot and look at the numbers
6. Which fights should I be Duplicating? If I duplicate say, a writing desk or lobsterfrogmen, will I search two drawers or get two barrels of gunpowder?
7. Does shattering punch increment the NC counter when searching for the Black Forest map?

It has worked that way since I started playing in 2006 at least. Some challenge paths have a different end boss after the NS1 fight, and as a result take more than 1 turn total.
6. Summon BRICKO bricks for more free fights. Perhaps even consider using these, Witchess fights and seals to charge JiTB?
JitB is no longer good since it activates on a random combat.
1. Do Digitize fights and familiar wandering monsters overwrite each other?
One can push the other back, the same as if you were away from adventure.php for a while. The other one eventually has to show up once given a chance.
2. Do Digitized Witchess pieces take a turn to fight? If so, what about BRICKO?
No and no. The monsters are free, no matter how you fight them.
6. Which fights should I be Duplicating? If I duplicate say, a writing desk or lobsterfrogmen, will I search two drawers or get two barrels of gunpowder?
You get more normal drops, like barrels of gunpowder. Special drops (like ninja assassin), or non-drops like drawer searching, are nut duplicated.
7. Does shattering punch increment the NC counter when searching for the Black Forest map?
The counter was incremented when you entered combat. It doesn't matter how the combat ends.

The main other example that comes to mind is the Hidden Apartment/Office building scheduled NCs if you're worried about finding enough shaman or accountants. Assuming you have some ability to olfact/banish, that's not often a concern and those can be good places for wanderers to basically help burn "delay".
theblackcat wrote:6. Blackberries can be obtained from the Buddy Bjorn, so a blackberry galoshes pull saves slightly under 1 turn.
My math is sketchy, but I think the galoshes are actually expected to save on the order of 2 turns, which is respectable in Standard if you're not worried about turngen pulls, but may not make the cut in Unrestricted. Pulling them gives 4 extra exploration before the first noncombat, which both saves about 1 turn of exploration overall as well as likely being the difference between getting 1 and 2 forced noncombats.

If you haven't seen it, our cool clannie, Disco Lord Ross, has a forum post that might help you with that question. I haven't put a lot of thought into what it would take with fewer perms/iotm.

theblackcat wrote:4. What are insta-kills good for beside insurance in combat? Are there any specific monsters or zone where they are best used?
As you say, the 2 main benefits are avoiding getting beaten up when you find yourself in trouble, and maintaining buffs. For me, most of my free kills go towards extending LT&T skills. In addition to shattering punch, the replica bat-oomerang is a pretty solid pull. Day 1, I'll use free kills to extend the 2x Init skill for modern zombies. Day 2, I'll use those free kills plus all 5 power pills to maintain the 2x item% buff while capping filthworm drops and carrying it through to pick up the unstable fulminate ingredients.
theblackcat wrote:6. Which fights should I be Duplicating? If I duplicate say, a writing desk or lobsterfrogmen, will I search two drawers or get two barrels of gunpowder
Day 1 doesn't have a great target that duplicate actually works on, so my main thought is Dairy Goat. Outside of The Source path, Gaudy Pirate is a good option to get both keys, or Lobsterfrogman.

Yay! Thanks lost and ungawa for your responses.

I'm actually interested in being able to beat the Queen in-run. Only problem is that I don't have a source of strong item/skill based delevellers, outside of being a Sauceror. Based on Disco Lord Ross's post though, I'm still short on a lot of the damage needed to kill them before running out of rounds.

Regarding the replica bat-oomerang thingy, I'm not seeing why its worth a pull. It gives a bunch of insta-kills a day, but those kills still cost an adventure, no? At least that's what I'm getting from the wiki. No Puck Man for free kills either. =P

Hmm, yea, the terminology isn't clear, but the replica bat-oomerang kills do not cost a turn. It links to the insta-kill page, which I guess is intended to list what I would tend to call "One Hit KO" items, whether or not they take a turn.
Maybe a better term for such items that don't cost an adventure would be "free kill", but I don't know if there's anything like a consensus within the community...
Tackling that is more effort than I'm up for at the moment, but at least now the wiki says the bat-oomerang doesn't take adventures.

Edit: Oh, and the wiki is wrong about what it takes to get the bat-oomerang. I won't edit that since I don't know the actual requirement myself, but you don't have to defeat the jokester. In fact, you don't have to defeat any bosses, so it doesn't even require you to consume a comic. As far as I can tell, it's just awarded to the "best" X runs from yesterday, where the definition of "best" and value of "X" are not clear to me, but there don't tend to be too many people playing any given day.

I'm pretty sure that was changed so you need to at least use up a comic now.
