Lespectre's BM DB run - 11/1502

Post by Lespectre » Wed Jul 07, 2010 3:50 am

I just finished day 2 of a DB BM run, so I thought I'd log it here. No promises that this is going to turn out well, though I hope to at least to better than the PM run I just finished, which had several truly embarrassing errors. I'm going to update as I go along, because my memory is pretty poor, and so I can get pointers along the way. My goal is 10 days, which is pretty ambitious, but I have faith.

I started a few days earlier than might be ideal for stat day (and Dia) placement, but I'm traveling later this month and wanted to get the run done before then.

This log was created by the Ascension Log Visualizer 2.4.3.
The basic idea and the format of this parser have been burrowed from the AFH MafiaLog Parser by VladimirPootin and QuantumNightmare.
===Day 1===

[0] Ascension Start [0,0,0]
#> Turn [0] pulled 1 Clan VIP Lounge key
-> Turn [0] none
[1-2] Haunted Pantry [0,0,0]
[3] Rest in your dwelling [0,0,0]
[4-6] Haunted Pantry [2,0,0]
[7-12] Outskirts of The Knob [0,1,2]
+> [10] Got chef's hat
+> [12] Got Knob Goblin encryption key
So far so good. I got both the manor and the encryption key really fast, plus the two artist items. The Chef's hat will allow me to build up a buffer of Disco Aerobics before there's any other demands on my MP.
[13] Unlucky Sewer [0,0,0]
+> [13] Got worthless knick-knack
[14-19] Sleazy Back Alley [2,2,5]
+> [18] Got Harold's bell
o> Ate 1 fortune cookie (1 adventures gained) [0,0,0]
[20] Guild Challenge [0,0,0]
I'm fairly sure I bought Pride here. This is also about when I remember to turn pickpocket on autoattack. Oops.
[21] Sleazy Back Alley [0,0,0]
%> [21] Badmoon: Sandwiched in the Club
[22] Guild Challenge [0,0,0]
[23] Haunted Kitchen [0,3,2]
[24-30] Spooky Forest [2,3,11]
+> [26] Got stolen accordion
=> Level 2 (Turn 27)! (4/3/5)
[31] Degrassi Knoll [0,0,0]
With one turn of Chronologically Pummeled left, I realize that I might as well be fighting in the Knoll for slightly better stats than the forest. I get a noncombat there anyway.
[32] Spooky Forest [0,0,0]
+> [32] Got mosquito larva
Grab a terrarium at this point. I decide to get the volley ASAP.
[33] Unlucky Sewer [0,0,0]
+> [33] Got worthless gewgaw
Good luck with trinkets so far, 2/2. This will not last.
[34-37] Barrel Full of Barrels [0,0,0]
o> Drank 1 strawberry wine (6 adventures gained) [0,0,9]
-> Turn [37] Blood-Faced Volleyball
[38-41] Spooky Forest [8,5,8]
%> [41] Badmoon: This Doesn't Look Like Candy Mountain
[42-43] Barrel Full of Barrels [0,0,0]
o> Drank 1 martini (6 adventures gained) [0,0,10]
o> Drank 1 whiskey sour (6 adventures gained) [12,0,0]
Good luck with drinks, two mainstat ones. I probably should have considered saving one as a nightcap, but I haven't eaten anything yet. I do have quite a few spooky mushrooms if worse comes to worse.
[44-57] Spooky Forest [24,11,26]
+> [53] Got spices
+> [54] Got Spooky Temple map
+> [56] Got Spooky-Gro fertilizer
+> [57] Got spooky sapling
o> Ate 1 Brimstone Chicken Sandwich (5 adventures gained) [-25,0,28]
Probably should have gone to the Haiku Dungeon, but it's nice to get this out of the way, and it didn't take that long. I'm doing okay on meat, so I buy Envy and a Chicken Sandwich.
=> Level 3 (Turn 44)! (6/4/8)
[58-67] Haiku Dungeon [24,12,34]
o> Ate 1 Brimstone Chicken Sandwich (4 adventures gained) [-28,0,27]
I get gravy, Bugbear Pants, and a meat locker I can open. I also get a Blowgun, which becomes my weapon because I am dumb and haven't made my epic weapon yet. Oops.
=> Level 4 (Turn 64)! (4/6/13)
[68-76] Typical Tavern Quest [20,13,35]
o> Ate 1 Brimstone Chicken Sandwich (4 adventures gained) [-28,0,30]
o> Ate 1 fortune cookie (1 adventures gained) [0,0,0]
o> Ate 1 spooky mushroom (3 adventures gained) [0,0,0]
o> Ate 1 stalk of asparagus (1 adventures gained) [0,2,0]
I find the faucet on square nine, but decide to go after Ratsworth. Tomorrow.
[77-78] Barrel Full of Barrels [0,0,0]
o> Drank 1 Mad Train wine (3 adventures gained) [0,0,0]
o> Drank 1 ice-cold Sir Schlitz (1 adventures gained) [0,0,0]
o> Drank 1 shot of orange schnapps (1 adventures gained) [4,0,0]
[79-82] Typical Tavern Quest [16,13,10]
o> Drank 1 bottle of sake (3 adventures gained) [0,0,0]
I've got a few turns, so I decide to look for Ratsworth. Bottle of Sake isn't a dream nightcap, but at least it's a three-drunkeness drink.

Overall, I'm extremely pleased with my Day 1. I got everything I wanted done, and much more. I probably should have made my Epic Weapon, but oh well. My goal for Day 2 is to get meat to afford Cocktailcrafting, preferably with 8 drunk left so that I can drink two ACs and then have one for a nightcap. I should probably have done vampire hearts, but that's the way it goes.

Sorry for the multipost! It wouldn't post the whole thing in one post. (I think that was the issue?)
===Day 2===

[83-91] Typical Tavern Quest [21,12,35]
+> [85] Got bottle of tequila
Day 2 doesn't go nearly as well. I use the muscle buff, hoping to kill Ratsworth with Moxious Maneuver, using the DR to take the hit. Ratsworth is on square 23, which sucks. Additionally, I believed MM was auto-hit, which it totally isn't. I did at least successfully run away from him.
[92] Degrassi Knoll [0,0,0]
[93-95] Haiku Dungeon [2,3,10]
I reason that as long as I'm going to be doing the Knoll, I should have a fairy, so I don't miss gearhead drops. I luck out and get a knob mushroom on the third turn.
[96-103] Degrassi Knoll [15,19,28]
+> [96] Got tires
+> [103] Got eyepatch
[104] Cook 1 Knob mushroom + 1 fairy gravy boat [0,0,0]
+> [104] Got pregnant mushroom
-> Turn [104] Baby Gravy Fairy
I can't afford an oven yet, so I have to spend some knoll turns without it anyway. I make and equip the fairy here.
[105-113] Degrassi Knoll [22,14,24]
+> [105] Got Knoll mushroom
+> [109] Got Gnollish toolbox
+> [113] Got Gnollish toolbox
Get the meat tank on toolbox number two.
[114-119] Unlucky Sewer [0,0,0]
+> [114] Got spices
+> [119] Got worthless trinket
My good trinket luck is over; five turns for this one. :/
[120] South of the Border [0,0,0]
I go here to try to get the meat adventure, but I still have trouble killing stuff. Oops.
[121-123] Barrel Full of Barrels [0,0,0]
o> Drank 1 whiskey and soda (6 adventures gained) [0,10,0]
[124-126] Degrassi Knoll [7,9,8]
+> [125] Got Gnollish toolbox
Back for the meat adventure. It doesn't show up.
[127-128] Unlucky Sewer [0,0,0]
+> [128] Got worthless gewgaw
At this point I finally wise up and decide to make my EW. Unfortunately, I'm also running out of turns.
[129-130] Cook 1 spooky mushroom + 1 skewer [0,0,0]
o> Ate 2 spooky shroomkabob (5 adventures gained) [0,0,19]
Pride is making it hard to efficiently get adventures with only crummy food available. Good enough, though.
[131] Smith 1 stone banjo + 1 disco ball [0,0,0]
o> Ate 1 Brimstone Chicken Sandwich (5 adventures gained) [-26,0,25]
Finally make the banjo. Also grab another sandwich, because I'm going to need two meat adventures to afford cocktailcrafting.
=> Level 5 (Turn 131)! (9/11/20)
[133-136] Guano Junction [11,10,14]
+> [135] Got sonar-in-a-biscuit
+> [136] Got sonar-in-a-biscuit
At this point I'm desperate for the meat adventures, so I decide to go for the one in the Entryway, which requires having the boss bat open.

[137] Typical Tavern Quest [0,0,0]
I need stuff to put garnishes in. Ratsworth one-shots me instead. Should have bought ODSOSP, maybe.
[138-140] Degrassi Knoll [7,2,6]
Work off beat up in a place with a meat adventure.
[141] Cook 1 spooky mushroom + 1 skewer [0,0,0]
o> Ate 1 spooky shroomkabob (4 adventures gained) [0,0,11]
[142-143] Degrassi Knoll [5,3,7]
Give up on this place. I figured this one would be fast, because I've done its trigger, but it's a no-show. Go south of the border for gate stuff and the meat adventure.
[144-147] South of the Border [2,1,7]
+> [144] Got tamarind-flavored chewing gum
+> [145] Got bottle of tequila, marzipan skull
+> [147] Got jabanero-flavored chewing gum
o> Drank 3 ice-cold Willer (3 adventures gained) [0,0,0]
o> Drank 1 monkey wrench (6 adventures gained) [0,9,0]
I didn't make it. I have to resign and drink some more.
[148] Typical Tavern Quest [15,5,18]
+> [148] Got Baron von Ratsworth's monocle, pickle-flavored chewing gum
@#$* you, Ratsworth.
[149-150] South of the Border [0,0,0]
%> [150] Badmoon: The Beaten-Senseless Man's Hand
FINALLY I get a big meat adventure. Still need a bit more, since I need the cocktailcrafting kit, too.
[151] Guano Junction [3,3,3]
+> [151] Got loose teeth, sonar-in-a-biscuit
[152] Bat Hole Entryway [0,0,0]
%> [152] Badmoon: Onna Stick
Bam. Buy Cocktailcrafting and a kit. Realize that I've been wearing a bum cheek instead of the chef's hat for a while, and still have 7 MP as a result.
[153] Rest in your dwelling [0,0,0]
+> [153] Got little paper umbrella
I don't know why the heck I did this. I had just a few turns, but I totally should have soda watered for MP. I did have meat.
[154] Mix 1 Typical Tavern swill + 1 little paper umbrella [0,0,0]
+> [154] Got magical ice cubes
o> Drank 1 fruity girl swill (11 adventures gained) [3,30,2]
o> Drank 1 ice-cold Willer (1 adventures gained) [0,0,0]
[155] Mix 1 margarita + 1 magical ice cubes [0,0,0]
I decide to put the ice cubes in the margarita, since the swill is more versatile.
[156-157] Haunted Pantry [2,5,4]
+> [156] Got magical ice cubes, razor-sharp can lid
o> Ate 2 spooky mushroom (5 adventures gained) [0,0,0]
o> Ate 1 stalk of asparagus (1 adventures gained) [0,2,0]
I was looking for food, but I don't know why I was looking here, besides the fact that beaten up + Affronted Decency were tanking my moxie to 4, preventing me from even entering most zones. I end up with Enhanced Archeologist, which only makes things worse.
[159] Mix 1 Typical Tavern swill + 1 magical ice cubes [0,0,0]
o> Drank 1 blended frozen swill (10 adventures gained) [2,2,30]
With the MP I need to summon it (courtesy of Chef Hat and soda water), I summon my last garnish, mix it for some reason, and then nightcap. I'll sleep off the rest of Beaten up, though tomorrow I'm still going to have the other two -Moxie effects on me. I'll barrels and craft first, I think. I should also shore if I plan to shore-buffer at all.

Day two was definitely rockier than day one. I made a lot more dubious choices, and was generally less well-planned, especially with regards to dealing with Bad Moon effects. I'm wondering if I should have actually done Oyster Egg Day; there are places where I could have used a mainhand disco ball without cramping my style, and it might have been worth stats or an adventure or two or a buff. On the whole, I'd characterize my luck this run as well above average, with only the long Ratsworth as something that sticks out as kind of bad. As much as I want liver, I think boxen are the priority tomorrow, particularly a chef so I can eat even remotely profitably. I have a wig and an extra skirt; A maid will be worth 36 adventures, which could save a day; I'll have to see where things fall. I also really, really need a lucre so that I can get limes at some point. Semirare will be a KGE guard unless I screw something up and am not afflicted with some -stat thing when my SR comes.

Random other notes: Didn't get Torso. In my last run, a PM run, it was good pretty much for just DR and eventually +5 ML, which seems not worth it. I know there are some good shirts, but I'm not going to spend a potentially large number of turns looking for the noncom.
I briefly considered not belling the bats, but I think that the additional eyedrops and pet-buffing spray that having a bunch of extra meat will allow might make up for it.
I haven't set the Hellevator yet, which is probably a big mistake, but I was fighting at barely-safe moxie a lot of the day, so I wouldn't have wanted to set it too high. It's going up so I can get more useful rewards from the next two bosses, and it'll probably stay there.
***
Help is welcome! This is my first time posting a log; I hope it is okay reading.

Re: Lespectre's Disco Bandit BM run - In progress!

Post by Lespectre » Thu Jul 08, 2010 1:51 am

Day Three Summary: Started out strong, faltered near the end.
===Day 3===
[160-164] Barrel Full of Barrels [0,0,0]
+> [160] Got magical ice cubes
-> Turn [0] none
-> Turn [104] Baby Gravy Fairy
[165-167] Muscle Vacation [8,0,0]
I still had a ton of negative bad moon effects on me, so I did this stuff. First two barrels were mimics, which I couldn't kill because of all the negative effects on me. Should have done the vacation first. I decided that box servants are a priority for today, over liver rushing.
[168] Fun House [1,2,5]
+> [168] Got box
[169] Heartbreaker's Hotel [0,0,0]
Set it to eight. I determine that the Bling will be slightly better than the Britches, since I'm going to get Elite Pants soon anyway, plus eight is a choice right away.
[170] Fun House [2,4,5]
+> [170] Got bottle of vodka, bottle of whiskey
[171] Pre-Cyrpt Cemetary [3,3,5]
[172] Fun House [5,2,3]
+> [172] Got box
I'm good on boxes now. I'm not remotely close to clownosity, so I decide to skip 'er.
[173] Pre-Cyrpt Cemetary [2,2,7]
[174-175] Typical Tavern [0,0,-10]
%> [175] Badmoon: Because Stereotypes Are Awesome
+> [175] Got leprechaun hatchling
[176-177] Pre-Cyrpt Cemetary [3,2,6]
+> [176] Got loose teeth
%> [177] Badmoon: What Do We Want?
-> Turn [177] Leprechaun
Here's what happened here. I realize that I'm going to want the BM effect (+Meat) from the cemetary for when I'm fighting bodyguard bats. Then I realize that I'm also going to want a lep for that, so I get the lep, then go back to the cemetary.
[178-185] Boss Bat's Lair [25,22,37]
+> [182] Got coconut shell
[186] Knob Goblin Kitchens [13,8,23]
#> [186] Semirare: Knob Goblin Elite Guard Captain
I use Hella Smooth here for the extra meat on bodyguard bats and to make sure that the Elite Guard Captain won't kill me. He doesn't. I am more proud than is warranted of the decision to use Hella Smooth here.
[187-201] Boss Bat's Lair [39,40,106]
o> Ate 1 fortune cookie (1 adventures gained) [0,0,0]
I don't kill the boss bat now because my moxie isn't high enough. I probably should have bought eye-poke, so that it would have been easy.
-> Turn [201] Baby Gravy Fairy
[202-214] Pre-Cyrpt Cemetary [33,34,65]
+> [202] Got skeleton bone
+> [203] Got grave robbing shovel
+> [209] Got loose teeth
+> [213] Got skeleton bone, skeleton bone
+> [214] Got smart skull
Miss the first smart skull even though I'm at +80 item drop. Get the second one. At some point I buy Disco Nap to save money on healing. Very little money.
[215-233] Fernswarthy's Ruins [35,42,78]
%> [220] Badmoon: Mind the Fine Print
+> [223] Got disembodied brain
+> [233] Got chef-in-the-box
o> Used 1 Manual of Dexterity [0,0,20]
o> Drank 1 calle de miel (10 adventures gained) [9,0,26]
o> Ate 1 lihc eye pie (6 adventures gained) [0,12,0]
I'm running out of adventures, so I bid my chef hat adeiu. My buffer of Disco Aerobics is much smaller than I would have liked. There were a lot of times when I forgot to cast it. At this point I do some math and figure that if I get really lucky, I'll be able to get liver today. I decide not to try, and instead to try to get my food sorted, by getting a bugbear beanie, or at least another bungguard. (For zapping.) I would also like to make a bartender.
=> Level 6 (Turn 226)! (17/18/29)
[234-236] Muscle Vacation [0,0,0]
+> [236] Got stick of dynamite
[237-239] Fernswarthy's Ruins [7,5,18]
o> Ate 1 uncooked chorizo (1 adventures gained) [-5,0,0]
I promptly forgot that I didn't have a bartender. I'm holding out hope that I'll be able to eat remotely decent food today, so I eat a one-fullness thing so I can mix.
[240] Mix 1 salty dog + 1 magical ice cubes [0,0,0]
o> Drank 1 slap and tickle (12 adventures gained) [0,10,27]
[241-243] Fun House [4,9,20]
[244-262] Degrassi Knoll [45,31,79]
+> [244] Got Knoll mushroom
+> [245] Got Gnollish toolbox
%> [248] Badmoon: Flowers For Oregon
+> [249] Got tires
+> [253] Got Gnollish toolbox
+> [256] Got Knoll mushroom, Knoll mushroom
+> [261] Got Gnollish toolbox
o> Ate 1 ghuol egg quiche (6 adventures gained) [-3,0,0]
o> Ate 1 lihc eye pie (10 adventures gained) [0,12,0]
Now I'm really hurting for lack of bugbearage. I start in the funhouse, but then remember that the knoll still has the 2000 meat adventure, plus it drops ingredients so I can eat decently even if I don't get the beanie today. I do get the meat adventure. I don't get the beanie. I finish half a bounty, so if nothing decent turns up, I can finish getting the lucre there.
[263] Mix 1 bottle of whiskey + 1 lemon [0,0,0]
[264] Mix 1 whiskey sour + 1 coconut shell [0,0,0]
To make sure I have a nightcap, I make a fuzzbump now.
[265] Degrassi Knoll [2,4,3]
[266-270] Pre-Cyrpt Cemetary [8,17,30]
+> [266] Got loose teeth
o> Ate 1 rat appendix kabob (4 adventures gained) [0,0,6]
[271-272] Typical Tavern [68,0,-10]
o> Drank 1 fuzzbump (14 adventures gained) [34,0,0]
I realized that with nothing good to drink (without a bartender, schnapps aren't very efficient, and I'd rather save my fruit in case I take a while to get a hippy outfit.) and no lenses anyway, it made sense to use my remaining drunkenness to try to get them. I didn't. Drank my nightcap.

My strong start (read: amazing luck) at the beginning of the run has started to peter out. Looking at where I was at the start of day three compared to the end of day three is a little depressing; I basically leveled a small amount and made a chef and some meat. I'm starting to get kind of worried about consumables, since I'm still at no lucre and no beanie. I think one of my first priorities tomorrow might actually be getting a lab key, so I can get my item drop up. Liver would also be nice. Bad Moon has an interesting pace; I'm rocketing through levels faster than I can get stuff done, thanks to Pride and not having Leash/Sympathy/Lyric.

As before, Comments appreciated.

Re: Lespectre's Disco Bandit BM run - In progress!

Post by Lespectre » Fri Jul 09, 2010 12:26 am

Not much to say about today's run. It felt horrible, but I got a lot of crummy swingy stuff out of the way, which is nice. Painfully, but out of the way. I STILL don't have a lucre, and no progress on liver.
===Day 4===
[273-279] Degrassi Knoll [3,8,17]
+> [278] Got Knoll mushroom
[280-284] Haiku Dungeon [8,8,18]
More adventures of Lespectre on the quest for the bugbear beanie. I've spent just an insane amount of time looking for this thing. I'm in the knoll because I'm still looking for the bounty there, but I realize that there's nine combats there and all the noncoms are unskippable and worthless, so I'm only fighting a bugbear every 11-12 adventures. I make for the haiku dungeon, and get the beanie after another five adventures there. (Including skipping the mushroom noncom about five times.) I'm wondering if I should have grabbed those for stir-fries. I'm thinking that not staying in the knoll was a mistake since I'm going to need to spend another jillion years there for the bounty anyway.
[285] Pre-Cyrpt Cemetary [2,4,4]
+> [285] Got loose teeth, skeleton bone
Now I'm looking for a smart skull. I realize that I want eyedrops and buffing spray.
[286-288] Mysticality Vacation [0,0,0]
+> [288] Got tropical orchid
[289] Pre-Cyrpt Cemetary [3,4,4]
[290-314] Knob Goblin Harem [72,80,118]
+> [299] Got disease
+> [301] Got Knob Goblin harem pants, Knob Goblin harem veil
+> [312] Got magical ice cubes
[315] Barrel Full of Barrels [0,0,0]
[316-324] Knob Goblin Harem [11,24,48]
+> [324] Got Cobb's Knob lab key
This was just brutal. 33 turns in the harem before I got the key, and I STILL got no perfume. (Did get about five veils.) This was just straight up poor luck.
o> Ate 2 lihc eye pie (16 adventures gained) [0,22,0]
[325-333] Fernswarthy's Ruins [12,31,41]
+> [333] Got disembodied brain
o> Used 1 Manual of Dexterity [0,0,40]
[334-338] Pre-Cyrpt Cemetary [10,14,26]
+> [334] Got skeleton bone, skeleton bone
+> [338] Got smart skull
Slap on some eyedrops, get a quickish brain and skull. Well, the brain took nine turns to show up, but at least the first one dropped it.
[339] Typical Tavern [0,0,0]
+> [339] Got bartender-in-the-box, beer lens, beer lens, little paper umbrella
+> [339] Got magical ice cubes
Break a day of sketchy luck with a zero-drunk lenses. Well, I guess I got three drunk yesterday failing to find them, but no more drunk for today.
[340-341] Knob Goblin Harem [16,0,0]
o> Drank 1 ducha de oro (12 adventures gained) [9,27,0]
-> Turn [341] Blood-Faced Volleyball
[342-343] Whitey's Grove [0,0,0]
o> Drank 2 white lightning (15 adventures gained) [0,0,0]
First turn White Lightning, second turn sign. Excellent. I make a mistake here in drinking the white lightning in a place where I'm about to want item drops. Let's burn it off
[344-347] Barrel Full of Barrels [0,0,0]
I get beaten up here, but it will wear off at the same time as eyedrops.
[348] Daily Dungeon [4,1,7]
-> Turn [348] Baby Gravy Fairy
Dungeon was terrible today, no doors, so I have no idea why I decided to do it today, since I'm not going to have limes or a wand today. Mistake.
[349] Degrassi Knoll [6,0,2]
+> [349] Got Gnollish toolbox
Misclick. Right square, wrong map zone.
[350-363] White Citadel [62,62,79]
+> [350] Got filthy knitted dread sack
[364] Knob Goblin Harem [0,0,0]
#> [364] Semirare: Hands On
[365-367] White Citadel [8,13,23]
+> [367] Got filthy corduroys
16 turns to Hippy outfit. Not bad, at least I didn't have to go to the island to complete it. I consider running from frat boys to keep from finishing the quest, but that seems dumb.
o> Ate 1 fortune cookie (1 adventures gained) [0,0,0]
[368-370] Moxie Vacation [0,0,0]
+> [370] Got barbed-wire fence
o> Drank 1 white lightning (7 adventures gained) [0,0,0]
[371-373] Muscle Vacation [19,0,0]
[374-378] Unlucky Sewer [0,0,0]
+> [374] Got turtle totem
+> [375] Got spices
+> [378] Got worthless trinket
o> Ate 3 Knoll stir-fry (16 adventures gained) [49,0,0]
o> Drank 1 fine wine (2 adventures gained) [0,0,5]
Great, another five-turn sewer. I guess I'm still averaging three-turn sewer overall, which is only a little below average.
-> Turn [378] Leprechaun
[379] Boss Bat's Lair [5,2,8]
+> [379] Got Boss Bat bandana, Boss Bat bling
Might as well get this guy out of the way. Grab his bling, which replaces the bling I was wearing.
[380-387] Daily Dungeon [3,6,11]
+> [387] Got Boris's key
Lockpicks, not sprout. I've got one more chance at it.
-> Turn [387] Blood-Faced Volleyball
[388-395] Degrassi Knoll [19,21,42]
+> [393] Got Knoll mushroom
Go here to finish the bounty. At some point a distant memory resurfaces, and I remember that the gearhead bounty is unusually slow. Dangit. Anyway, I still don't finish the bounty. In fact, despite having spent 66 turns in Degrassi Knoll so far this run, I have a mere three oily rags. That kind of sucks.
o> Drank 1 rockin' wagon (13 adventures gained) [0,0,36]
Today went pretty poorly overall, but there's not really anything I could have done about it. Some stuff - like perfume - just needs to happen at some point, and this time it took forever. (And still didn't happen.) Goal for tomorrow is to get liver. Screw all this other junk. And I guess I'm still probably going to have to finish that bounty at some point. Ten days is looking pretty not-happeningy at this point, just on raw turncount. Bleh.

Re: Lespectre's Disco Bandit BM run - In progress!

Post by Lespectre » Sat Jul 10, 2010 2:00 am

I can't believe that this was day five already. I'm almost level eight by the end of it, but am incredibly far behind on quests, mostly because I have spent 100 friggin' adventures in the knoll. I don't care if there are supposed to be two copies of the gearhead. I'm never, ever taking that bounty again. Onto the log. It's a short one today.
===Day 5===
Dungeon's only got one door today, and I already have a key (even though it's not mainstat), so I decide to just go straight for liver. I consider getting limes first so that I can eat better pies today, but I decide not to risk it.
[396] Knob Goblin Harem [0,0,0]
-> Turn [396] Blood-Faced Volleyball
Uh, the game weirded out on me here, so I don't know what happened, but whatever it was got me a perfume. Nice. Not sure why I didn't kill the king immediately. I think I wanted to leave the Hellevator on 8 for longer.
[397-403] Dark Heart of the Woods [18,34,54]
-> Turn [403] Baby Gravy Fairy
=> Level 7 (Turn 399)! (28/28/40)
[404-406] Dark Neck of the Woods [11,15,30]
+> [404] Got ruby W
+> [406] Got coconut shell, coconut shell
-> Turn [405] Blood-Faced Volleyball
[407-424] Dark Elbow of the Woods [78,87,178]
+> [412] Got little paper umbrella
+> [424] Got eldritch butterknife
o> Used 1 Manual of Dexterity [0,0,100]
[425-426] Dark Heart of the Woods [0,0,0]
+> [426] Got box of birthday candles
[427-428] Dark Neck of the Woods [6,4,12]
[429-430] Barrel Full of Barrels [0,0,0]
[432-436] Dark Neck of the Woods [20,31,38]
[437] Barrel Full of Barrels [0,0,0]
[438-439] Degrassi Knoll [2,12,12]
[440-453] Dark Neck of the Woods [69,98,111]
+> [444] Got wussiness potion
+> [453] Got dodecagram
o> Drank 1 rockin' wagon (10 adventures gained) [0,0,34]
[454-483] Friar's Gate [134,167,259]
+> [463] Got Azazel's unicorn
+> [473] Got Azazel's lollipop
+> [483] Got Azazel's tutu
Basically average Friar's luck. (Or is it? Now that I think about it, 50 turns to open the gate seems kinda long.) Got the Ruby W and a Wussiness potion.
o> Drank 2 fine wine (6 adventures gained) [0,0,9]
o> Drank 1 ocean motion (11 adventures gained) [25,12,0]
o> Drank 1 slip 'n' slide (11 adventures gained) [35,0,0]
[484-494] Degrassi Knoll [19,34,64]
+> [488] Got Knoll mushroom
o> Ate 1 lihc eye pie (11 adventures gained) [0,15,0]
[495] Friar's Gate [0,0,0]
+> [495] Got steel margarita
Nice. I also bought gluttony here, since I'm already mostly through level seven and I haven't even started that quest. I can definitely use adventures more than stats. One plus of yesterday's poorish luck was that I'm leveling like nobody's business. Although I guess it's somebody's business, because it's my business. Business is pretty good.
[496-520] Degrassi Knoll [56,59,97]
+> [500] Got Knoll mushroom, Knoll mushroom
+> [501] Got Gnollish toolbox
+> [511] Got Knoll mushroom, Knoll mushroom
+> [513] Got Gnollish toolbox
+> [520] Got Gnollish toolbox, filthy lucre, odor extractor
o> Ate 3 strawberry pie (25 adventures gained) [0,0,29]
-> Turn [520] Baby Gravy Fairy
Not much to say about an 101 turn bounty. Even if there's only one Gnoll in the area, 66 turns (still horrible) would be the average. For comparison, I got at least eleven Crossdressers in that period, since that's how many wigs I had. Also, the first combat was a bugbear that dropped both parts.
[521-525] Menagerie 1 [19,28,45]
o> Drank 1 a little sump'm sump'm (13 adventures gained) [0,34,9]
o> Ate 1 rat appendix kabob (3 adventures gained) [0,0,8]
*> [522] Started hunting Fruit Golem
Obviously with the 100 turn bounty, the whole extractor escapade was totally not worth it, but as long as I have the extractor, I might as well do it, and I might as well do it where I can overlap friar blessings and Hella Smooth. In the few turns I spend, I get three cherries, but no limes.

I'm likely going to be banking quite a bit tomorrow, both because the stat day is a few days away and because I'm kind of busy during that period. Goals for tomorrow are to DD and then to do whatever. It's past the point of the game where I have a bunch of competing goals.

One thing I've been thinking about is how I'm going to handle NS familiars. Buffing Spray is a given, but my other options seem to be:
- Get all five before trying, level them up to 5 on the battlefield or whatever, use buffing spray, use pet snacks.
- Get all five before trying, use buffing spray, pet snacks, arena buff. (Requires doing arena as a hippy.)
- Get whatever comes. Get two pet snacks. Level whatever I have up to five on the battlefield. If I don't have the second one, get it, arena it to five, and use my second pet snacks if the first one expired.
- Get whatever comes. Get one pet snacks. Level whatever I have up to five on the battlefield. If I don't have the second one, get it, level it up to 10 in the arena, and cover with buffing spray and the equipment it wins. If it wins a necklace, get two more levels. Also, Magic Whistle.

I like Plan C the best. That means my next three semirares are Pet Snacks, ASCII, Pet Snacks, and it means that I do need to make sure that pirates are done sometime in the next 180 adventures or so. (Since my next SR is 20 turns off.) I can actually probably wait on the second pet snacks until my last SR, which will help me gauge if it's better to switch to Plan A. I think plan A is better if I get 4/5 of them during my normal adventures - or basically if I get a Barnacle.

Great log. There's not much I could add or suggest, given your reflection and insight! (and your horrid bounty issues)

My usual option for tower familiars is to take whichever I get (though my extra vacations are muscle, and if I get the anti, then I usually pick up the extra cheese too), only get one pet snacks, and use it + knob buff + arena. There's some risk, but I've passed with only having 2/5 before, and I often can pick up the lime/goat/potato before the ten turns run out. Of course, this option has cost me a day and 35 turns, too.

Overall, I'd suggest that you consider where you need to go in the next few days, and try to organise your critical path in a way that allows you to run easiest to hardest. For example, I suggest going elbow> heart> neck, because elbow is the most survivable -- and if you can just survive the elbow, you can probably garner the two moxie you'll need to survive the next zone.

Hopefully limes will drop like crazy for you and you'll make your target.

Keep at it!

Thanks for the feedback phel! It was sort of weird to go to the Neck first, but I had some item buff left over, so I figured I'd go there until a Ruby W dropped.
===Day 6===
I'm a big believer in banking turns for stat days, and I like to start two days in advance so that the day before I have some extra turns to work with when looking at various things I want to have set up for the stat day (like having the powerleveling zone unlocked.) While stats are something I'm not having trouble with this run, I'm banking anyway. My luck turned around today; while I didn't do much, what I did went pretty well. (I got a lower-than expected number of limes, but only by a few, but my pirate outfit came fast.)
[526-548] Menagerie 1 [89,103,195]
+> [526] Got lime
+> [529] Got little paper umbrella
+> [535] Got lime
+> [542] Got lime
+> [543] Got lime
+> [544] Got lime
+> [545] Got lime
+> [546] Got lime
=> Level 8 (Turn 541)! (36/38/53)
[549] Menagerie 2 [0,0,0]
#> [549] Semirare: Rokay, Raggy!
Regardless of what direction I decide to take it on the NS familiars, I'm going to want at least one of these.
[550-561] Menagerie 1 [48,46,107]
+> [555] Got lime
Final limecount: 8. I closet one for a lime cub so that I won't accidentally eat or drink it before then. There's a spooky mushroom already in there for a future Grue Egg Omelet. (That word always looks spelled wrong.) I got eleven cherries, which are nice for Cherry Pies and for booze that's a little better than normal mixed drinks. I also got ten oranges, which I don't really care about. I guess they save money.
[562-567] Heartbreaker's Hotel [0,0,0]
-> Turn [567] Blood-Faced Volleyball
Is there any rhyme or reason to the Heartbreaker's floor options? It took me a long time to get it to 7.
[568] King's Chamber [21,17,36]
+> [568] Got Cape of the Goblin King
Knock off this guy finally. His cape goes on, and I buy Mad Looting Skillz with the spoils.
[569-575] Daily Dungeon [6,6,12]
+> [575] Got Jarlsberg's key, magical ice cubes, magical ice cubes
I do this before eating, because I would rather cook with a Sneaky Pete's key if I get one. I get Jarlsberg's. While my Muscle is somewhat lower than my myst (Thanks, Brimstone Chicken Sandwiches), I decide to eat Jarlsberg's Pies instead of Boris's. So, uh, I can equip the fledges earlier. That was my actual thought process. What I probably should have done is eaten cherry pies or something, waiting to eat Key Lime Pies until I can eat mainstat ones, which are just a zap away. I manage to poison myself on the first turn (a door) since Pick-o-matic lockpicks do not work how I think they do. Fun fact: The potato sprout comes from the first chest, not the second one. That means that I had basically no chance to get it either time. A-whoops. I kept thinking "I should really check on this". I didn't. Until now.
o> Ate 3 Jarlsberg's key lime pie (59 adventures gained) [0,90,0]
o> Drank 1 ducha de oro (13 adventures gained) [10,25,0]
o> Ate 1 fortune cookie (1 adventures gained) [0,0,0]
o> Ate 1 rat appendix kabob (4 adventures gained) [0,0,6]
-> Turn [575] Baby Gravy Fairy
[576-581] Pirate Cove [27,31,39]
+> [576] Got stuffed shoulder parrot
+> [581] Got swashbuckling pants
I know that I'm going to want the bridge before my next SR, so I do this now, plus I'll want to be in the Barrrrrr on stat day for the good stat adventures. I get amazing luck, finishing my outfit in just five turns. (I already had the eyepatch from a gnoll.) Both items dropped from combat.
[582-587] Barrel Full of Barrels [0,0,0]
+> [584] Got bottle of vodka
+> [585] Got boxed wine
+> [586] Got bottle of rum
+> [587] Got bottle of tequila
o> Drank 1 calle de miel (11 adventures gained) [10,0,26]
o> Drank 1 sangria (9 adventures gained) [0,8,0]
I opt for the middle row of booze over the top, because it gives me more flexibility with garnishes (since I have the hippy stand open), and lets me potentially make Old-Fashioneds or Sangrias (base booze + cherry drinks), which are better than anything that comes from the top row. (They're worse than garnished drinks, but I can't fill up on just garnished drinks.)
[588-590] Whitey's Grove [7,3,15]
+> [589] Got bird rib
%> [590] Badmoon: A White Lie
o> Drank 1 calle de miel (13 adventures gained) [8,0,26]
o> Drank 8 fine wine (14 adventures gained) [0,0,29]
Thinking about getting a wand, I realize that I didn't get this adventure. I grab it now, since there's a reasonable amount of stuff I can do where I won't mind the -20% stats.

Today's luck was relentlessly epic - making up a little bit for some of my bad luck earlier. Let's get to it. It's worth noting that ten days is no longer really a realistic goal, just on pure turncount.
===Day 7===
[591-599] Haunted Billiards Room [20,23,45]
+> [595] Got pool cue
I'm banking today, so it's mostly about setting up what I'll want for tomorrow. I decide that having upstairs open would be nice, so I get to that first. Eight turn Billiards, not bad. Killin' stuff with my Infernal Fife.
[600] Barrel Full of Barrels [0,0,0]
+> [600] Got boxed wine
I had one turn of Maid Disservice left, so I figured I'd work it off.
[601-606] Haunted Library [29,21,62]
-> Turn [602] Baby Gravy Fairy
I decide after spending a few turns here that opening the DoD is more important so I can eat mainstat pies.
[607-609] Greater-Than Sign [0,0,0]
+> [607] Got plus sign
Excellent! Three turn unlock.
[610-612] Barrel Full of Barrels [0,0,0]
+> [610] Got bottle of tequila
+> [611] Got bottle of vodka
[613] Typical Tavern [0,0,0]
+> [613] Got beer lens, beer lens
I go to the barrels to burn off Teleportitus. I have one turn of it left. I gamble. I get beer lenses. I know I'm photographing an ASCII, not sure what else. (Since I'm certainly not doing Beach.)
[614] Fun House [4,0,4]
+> [614] Got box
For the camera, before I forget.
[615-616] Greater-Than Sign [10,10,17]
I spend two turns here before I remember to, you know, actually read the plus sign.
[617-622] Dungeons of Doom [19,40,37]
+> [618] Got magical ice cubes
+> [620] Got magic whistle
o> Drank 1 perpendicular hula (11 adventures gained) [0,0,35]
o> Drank 1 pink pony (11 adventures gained) [26,0,9]
I get beat up. Poisonous enemy + autoattack macro that doesn't stop on that isn't a good combo.
[623-625] 8-Bit Realm [14,6,12]
Might as well.
[626-630] Dungeons of Doom [17,23,57]
o> Ate 5 cherry pie (50 adventures gained) [0,42,0]
At this point I decide that this can wait until I have the song set. I've had and 100-turn wand before when running -15% combat, so I'm going to do what I can to mitigate this. I do have the yellow glass bounty at least. (I had to give up the Raver Bounty I was holding onto from yesterday to do it. Not sure that was the right move, since the odds of me finishing the yellow glass bounty are pretty small.
[631] Haunted Library [0,0,0]
I get beat up. Corroded Weapon + Moxie Class with no bonus damage means that it's not hard to die on enemy crits.
[632-634] 8-Bit Realm [9,5,18]
Might as well.
[635-644] Haunted Library [39,41,75]
+> [637] Got inkwell
[645] Haunted Bedroom [0,0,0]
I get beat up. Should have turned autoattack pickpocket off.
[646-648] 8-Bit Realm [6,3,19]
[649-659] Haunted Bedroom [0,0,59]
+> [649] Got Lord Spookyraven's spectacles
I get beat up. This time I just got jumped.
[660-662] 8-Bit Realm [10,5,18]
[663-664] Haunted Bedroom [0,0,0]
o> Drank 3 snifter of thoroughly aged brandy (14 adventures gained) [0,29,0]
These are the same adv/drunk as fine wine, but give myst instead of moxie. I'm trying to reserve some meat, though, and these are free. At this point I need to burn down some turns, so I decide to see what the trapper wants. He wants chrome, so I go to the mine.
[665-672] Itznotyerzitz Mine [25,32,56]
+> [669] Got miner's helmet
+> [672] Got 7-Foot Dwarven mattock, miner's pants
Pretty quick. I continue the streak of getting outfits from drops instead of noncoms.
[673-682] Itznotyerzitz Mine (in Disguise) [0,0,0]
o> Drank 5 fine wine (9 adventures gained) [0,0,20]
It's not free, but it's the best I got.
[683-687] Goatlet [29,25,28]
+> [686] Got bottle of whiskey
+> [687] Got glass of goat's milk, goat cheese
o> Drank 1 rockin' wagon (13 adventures gained) [0,0,34]
At this point I fail at subtraction, and think that I should overdrink when I'm at 150 instead of 140. As a result, I end the day with 163 adventures, and my chrome crossbow isn't going to help. I look for things to smith, but I got nothing. The only useful thing I can do is set the Hellevator. I decide to set it to lobby to allow myself to survive in the Ballroom ASAP. It's worth noting that I have the easy but nontrivial task of hitting level 9 in 35 adventures for the SR. Shouldn't be too hard if I'm in the Barrrrr and Ballroom during that time.

Tomorrow's wide open. Goals are to get a wand so I can eat mainstat key lime pies, camera the ASCII for easy stats, and do the Barrrrrr. I'll probably also have time to powerlevel a little and finish goats.

One thing I need to consider is whether I want to drop 10000+ meat on the Disco Bandit combat suite. Basically lets me dump 15 MP into a fight for +20% item drops. I think that after I sell the dictionary, that actually makes sense. It'll also speed up the nuns a bit, and let me fight in areas with really uneven monster level, like the airship, earlier than normal. Disco Power Nap might conceivably pay for itself, but it won't do that until later, and meat now is better than meat later.

Day Eight had some brilliantly good luck marred by some dumb errors. My first goal was to get to level 9 in 32 turns, for my semirare. I didn't underestimate the amount of stats available, but I did underestimate the extent to which I could survive monsters. Stuff I was outmoxing was regularly two-shotting me with crits, and even if it couldn't, the disco banjo hits for almost no damage.
[689-690] Defiled Nook [6,6,31]
+> [690] Got loose teeth
-> Turn [689] Blood-Faced Volleyball
There's a huge amount of going in circles today. I start out here, because I want the stats.
-> Turn [690] Baby Gravy Fairy
[691-692] Goatlet [11,10,23]
+> [691] Got bottle of whiskey
I go here because I still have turns of the Friar's buff left from yesterday, but quickly abandon it since the stats are so low.
[693-694] Haunted Ballroom [0,0,75]
o> Used 1 Manual of Dexterity [0,0,50]
I guess I've been forgetting to use that. Oops. That does end up costing me. Even though I can outmox the things here, I can't survive combat at all.
[695-698] Goatlet [16,24,46]
+> [696] Got bottle of whiskey
+> [698] Got glass of goat's milk, goat cheese
Go here again, then do some math and realize that I'm going to need to be somewhere with stat adventures to get close.
[699] Haunted Ballroom [0,0,0]
Beat up.
[700-711] Defiled Nook [61,62,240]

+> [709] Got skeleton bone, smart skull
+> [711] Got skeleton bone, skeleton bone
-> Turn [703] Blood-Faced Volleyball
At this point I realize that Barrrney's Bar is a good middle ground - not as tough as the bedroom, with good moxie stats.
[712-723] Barrrney's Barrr [45,36,277]
+> [714] Got bottle of rum
+> [716] Got bottle of gin, bottle of rum, bottle of vodka, bottle of whiskey

o> Drank 2 fine wine (4 adventures gained) [0,0,8]
o> Drank 3 old-fashioned (24 adventures gained) [0,28,0]
I make the pretty key mistake of not drinking before I go in. Doing so would let me get way more stats from the karaoke adventure.
[724] Limerick Dungeon [0,0,0]
#> [724] Semirare: The Bleary-Eyed Cyclops
Failure. I weigh my options and decide that an Eyedrops is probably best.
-> Turn [724] Baby Gravy Fairy
[725-733] Goatlet [246,238,366]
+> [727] Got glass of goat's milk, goat cheese
+> [728] Got goat cheese
+> [729] Got bottle of whiskey
+> [730] Got glass of goat's milk, goat cheese
+> [732] Got goat cheese
+> [733] Got bottle of whiskey
Finish that out.
[734-745] Defiled Cranny [142,133,216]
-> Turn [734] Blood-Faced Volleyball
-> Turn [737] Baby Gravy Fairy
-> Turn [739] Blood-Faced Volleyball

[751-761] Barrrney's Barrr [58,73,354]
+> [756] Got bottle of rum
o> Ate 1 fortune cookie (1 adventures gained) [0,0,0]
[762] Cap'm Caronch's Map [0,0,0]
-> Turn [762] Baby Gravy Fairy
Get crab-crit to death. At this point I decide that plinking with the banjo just isn't working. I take the moxie hit to switch to an Infernal Fife. I notice that I don't have a stolen accordion.
[763-765] 8-Bit Realm [6,5,19]
[766] Cap'm Caronch's Map [8,5,18]
[768] The Infiltrationist [0,0,0]

[773] Defiled Cranny [18,13,32]
-> Turn [773] Baby Gravy Fairy
[774-790] F'c'le [146,83,300]
+> [775] Got mizzenmast mop
+> [777] Got barrrnacle
+> [783] Got rigging shampoo
+> [789] Got ball polish
Sixteen turn F'c'le. I'll take it.

[795-797] Haunted Ballroom [21,14,35]

-> Turn [809] Blood-Faced Volleyball
A few more turns here gets me the wand. I make the Sneaky Pete's key. Maybe not the best use of my zap, but it's worth about 120 stats from eating mainstat pies.
[810-826] Defiled Alcove [89,96,241]
+> [813] Got loose teeth
+> [814] Got loose teeth
+> [818] Got loose teeth
+> [823] Got rusty grave robbing shovel
+> [826] Got loose teeth
[827] Haert of the Cyrpt [31,29,73]
+> [827] Got chest of the Bonerdagon, skull of the Bonerdagon
o> Used 1 chest of the Bonerdagon [150,150,188]
=> Level 8 (Turn 827)! (54/56/82)
That's level ten. I don't know why it says that.
[828-838] Haunted Ballroom [68,50,397]
-> Turn [828] Baby Gravy Fairy
I manage an impressive zero dance cards. Song is set.
[839] Beanbat Chamber [1,3,3]
+> [839] Got enchanted bean
[840-860] Haunted Ballroom [101,73,1140]
[861-891] Fantasy Airship [175,186,522]
+> [863] Got photoprotoneutron torpedo
+> [866] Got metallic A
+> [869] Got Tissue Paper Immateria
+> [878] Got Tin Foil Immateria
+> [880] Got Gauze Immateria
+> [889] Got Plastic Wrap Immateria
+> [891] Got S.O.C.K.
-> Turn [866] Blood-Faced Volleyball
30 turn Airship. I get everything I need, including a weapon upgrade to a Magilaser Blastercannon.
[892-893] Orc Chasm [11,14,37]
#> [893] Semirare: Bad ASCII Art
+> [893] Got 30669 scroll, 33398 scroll, 334 scroll, 334 scroll
[894] Shaking 4-D Camera [6,9,14]
#> [894] Semirare: Bad ASCII Art
+> [894] Got 30669 scroll, 33398 scroll, 334 scroll, 334 scroll
This wasn't a great use of this, since I need to find a second adding machine to actually make the 31337 scroll. I end up not doing that.
[895-911] Orc Chasm [88,95,226]
+> [902] Got 334 scroll
+> [905] Got lowercase N
+> [907] Got 64735 scroll
%> [908] Badmoon: Mistaken Identity, LOL
+> [911] Got lowercase N
I guess I didn't notice that I already had a lowercase N. I also buy the first three disco combat skills, so I can get +20% items from the disco combo.
o> Ate 1 Sneaky Pete's key lime pie (16 adventures gained) [0,0,36]
o> Ate 2 dehydrated caviar (5 adventures gained) [0,0,43]
o> Ate 1 grue egg omelette (30 adventures gained) [44,38,55]
-> Turn [896] Baby Gravy Fairy
[912-941] Haunted Ballroom [132,134,2459]
+> [914] Got dance card
+> [920] Got dance card
+> [929] Got dance card
+> [932] Got dance card
+> [935] Got dance card
Much better dance card luck.
[942-943] Black Forest [15,14,51]
+> [942] Got adder bladder, sunken eyes
+> [943] Got Black No. 2, broken wings
[944-951] Haunted Ballroom [45,45,574]
+> [947] Got dance card
Cash in on the last dance card I used.
[952-955] Black Forest [26,19,71]
+> [953] Got black picnic basket
Neat, black pepper.
[956-958] Muscle Vacation [0,0,0]
I have no recollection of what I was doing here. Maybe burning off turns of something? I think this is out of order, and that I did this after the desert to get rid of those effects.
[959-964] Desert (Unhydrated) [0,0,0]
[965-968] Hidden Temple [50,0,0]
Hell yeah, four turn temple.
[969-972] Giant's Castle [7,14,20]
+> [969] Got plot hole
+> [970] Got thin black candle
+> [971] Got furry fur
+> [972] Got thin black candle
[973-974] Daily Dungeon [0,0,0]
Again, not sure what this was. Potato try? Why would I do that here?
[975-987] Giant's Castle [310,71,528]
+> [976] Got thin black candle
+> [981] Got thin black candle
+> [982] Got giant needle
+> [983] Got awful poetry journal
+> [984] Got heavy D, original G
-> Turn [983] Blood-Faced Volleyball
-> Turn [987] Barrrnacle
[988] Poop Deck [0,0,0]
-> Turn [988] Baby Gravy Fairy
One turn poop deck. The Barrrnaacle was out because I figured I'd get it a few XP in a place where it doesn't matter.
[989-999] Belowdecks [108,102,245]
+> [990] Got acoustic guitarrr
+> [993] Got snakehead charrrm
+> [999] Got snakehead charrrm
[1000-1005] Fun House [14,9,25]
+> [1000] Got bottle of vodka
o> Drank 1 fuzzbump (14 adventures gained) [35,0,0]
This was dumb. I was going for another box to make a second camera, but I don't even have a spring. Overall today had godly luck (unless you count getting repeatedly killed by enemy crits as bad luck), but I made some kind of poor decisions. Just on raw turncount, I think I'm looking at eleven days, since I still have the bulk of the level eleven quest to do, plus the whole war and the HitS. (I also need an accordion.) Tomorrow's another stat day, but I'm probably focusing on just finishing the level eleven quest and hopefully unlocking the fruit stand (I'm doing this as soon as I hit 12, to maximize the number of mainstat pies and schnapps I can drink). Next SR is an inhaler, then pet snacks.

Day nine. I'm not going to make ten days, but I am going to make eleven days barring catastrophe.
o> Ate 1 fortune cookie (1 adventures gained) [0,0,0]
[1006-1007] Haunted Ballroom [9,6,18]
Unlock the Basement.
[1008] Oasis in the Desert [0,0,0]
[1009-1012] Desert (Ultrahydrated) [38,21,67]
+> [1009] Got little paper umbrella, magical ice cubes, magical ice cubes
[1013] Oasis in the Desert [0,0,0]
Beat up by a Rolling Stone. I miss Tao.
[1014-1016] 8-Bit Realm [6,13,8]
[1017-1018] Oasis in the Desert [0,0,0]
+> [1018] Got stone rose
[1019-1026] Desert (Ultrahydrated) [55,56,94]
[1027-1030] Oasis in the Desert [34,30,57]
+> [1030] Got drum machine
[1031-1032] Desert (Ultrahydrated) [7,9,29]
[1033-1047] Oasis in the Desert [89,69,211]
+> [1037] Got worm-riding manual page 1
+> [1039] Got worm-riding manual page 2
+> [1046] Got worm-riding manual pages 3-15
-> Turn [1040] Barrrnacle
I periodically use my Barrrnacle throughout the day to put weight on it. Since I'm not doing the arena, I need familiars to be level 4 to beat the Sorceress's familiars with my Magic Whistle, Pet Snacks, and Pet-Buffing Spray.
-> Turn [1047] Baby Gravy Fairy
[1048] Desert (Ultrahydrated) [0,0,0]
+> [1048] Got worm-riding hooks
[1049-1071] Palindome [246,244,790]
+> [1049] Got hard-boiled ostrich egg
+> [1050] Got hard rock candy
+> [1054] Got photograph of God
+> [1057] Got bottle of gin
+> [1059] Got stunt nuts
+> [1065] Got bottle of gin
+> [1069] Got ketchup hound
o> Ate 1 Sneaky Pete's key lime pie (19 adventures gained) [0,0,38]
=> Level 9 (Turn 1067)! (68/67/119)
[1072] Giant's Castle [0,0,0]
#> [1072] Semirare: All The Rave
For the nuns. I dislike doing the Nuns in BM because it seems to take forever, but it is way faster than skipping them.
[1073] Palindome [100,100,125]
[1074-1080] Knob Goblin Laboratory [18,21,46]
-> Turn [1075] Barrrnacle
-> Turn [1080] Baby Gravy Fairy
Mr. Alarm sure took a long time to show, compared to what I'm used to. No big loss, though. I get some bunches of square grapes to hold me over on booze.
[1081-1089] Whitey's Grove [8,16,89]
+> [1089] Got lion oil
o> Ate 1 Sneaky Pete's key lime pie (17 adventures gained) [0,0,35]
[1090] Knob Goblin Laboratory [0,0,0]
+> [1090] Got Mega Gem
[1091-1109] Hidden City [197,141,377]
+> [1098] Got world's smallest violin
+> [1103] Got pygmy blowgun
o> Drank 3 Supernova Champagne (26 adventures gained) [28,26,36]
o> Ate 1 fortune cookie (1 adventures gained) [0,0,0]
o> Drank 2 perpendicular hula (25 adventures gained) [0,0,88]
25-turn Hidden City. I get a blowgun, but no pigment.
[1110-1113] Haunted Wine Cellar [35,48,99]
+> [1110] Got dusty bottle of Marsala, dusty bottle of Muscat
+> [1111] Got dusty bottle of Merlot, dusty bottle of Pinot Noir
+> [1112] Got dusty bottle of Marsala
+> [1113] Got dusty bottle of Port, dusty bottle of Zinfandel
Make up for it with a 4-turn cellar.
[1114] Hidden City (Altar of Pikachutlotal) [0,0,0]
[1115] Hidden City (Altar of Squirtlcthulli) [0,0,0]
[1116] Hidden City (Altar of Charcoatl) [0,0,0]
[1117] Hidden City (Altar of Bulbazinalli) [0,0,0]
-> Turn [1117] Barrrnacle
[1118] Hidden City (Smallish Temple) [29,28,82]
Hawt spectre-on-spectre action.
[1119] Palindome [30,39,70]
Dr. Awkward
[1120-1142] Wartime Hippy Camp [900,400,750]
+> [1132] Got reinforced beaded headband
+> [1135] Got bejeweled pledge pin
+> [1138] Got round purple sunglasses
+> [1142] Got bullet-proof corduroys
o> Ate 1 fishy fish casserole (14 adventures gained) [0,0,44]
o> Ate 1 savoy truffle (8 adventures gained) [19,20,23]
I think of this as being faster if you don't have good item drops and suck at combat, but it took forever this time. This is probably where some of the delay() that I didn't have in the temple ended up. Assuming this area has delay. What do I know.
[1143] Frat House [1,1,2]
[1144-1145] Wartime Frat House (Hippy Disguise) [0,0,0]
-> Turn [1145] Baby Gravy Fairy
This at least goes mercifully quickly.
[1146-1152] Hatching Chamber [73,66,202]
[1153] Feeding Chamber [10,5,34]
[1154-1158] Guards' Chamber [52,51,145]
[1159] Queen's Chamber [11,16,23]
Thirteen-turn worms. The Cyclops Eyedrops that I didn't mean to get in the first place worked out. I did forget the BM item buff. I guess I can use that in the HitS or just not get it.
o> Drank 1 shot of peach schnapps (6 adventures gained) [0,0,21]
[1160-1165] Hole in the Sky [76,65,138]
As long as I have a giant pile of buffs on me.
-> Turn [1165] Barrrnacle
[1166-1168] Spooky Forest [1,1,2]
%> [1167] Badmoon: That's My Favorite Kind of Contraption
I guess I'm looking for an accordion? I should actually wait until after the three gates, because if they send me south of the border, I might pickpocket one. (I have about half the things from down there from when I went after the BM meat adventure.) Anyway, I end up getting torso after all, I guess, way too late for it to matter.
[1169-1178] Barn [87,67,195]
o> Drank 1 a little sump'm sump'm (12 adventures gained) [0,26,10]
-> Turn [1169] Leprechaun
These are the least sucky of the things I have left. I put a tiny bit more weight on the lep. I also attempt to zap for an accordion. That group has 12 things in it, so it was a huge longshot, but I couldn't think of anything better to do with the zap. (With the stand open, zapping for food items isn't important, and I have my letters and pepper sorted.) I am rewarded with a Disco Mask. At first I feel bad because I won't be able to stasis the gremlins without a turtle totem (the only thing in the zap group I didn't autosell or consume. Why did I autosell that stuff? It's one meat!), but then I remember my Scepter. And then I remember "attacking for sucky DB damage".

As I mentioned earlier, I should make 11 days with little problem, barring catastrophe. I'd have 170 turns with normal consumables. I'll do a bit better because of corpse drinks, but those will also waste some turns. The war is going to take ~150 turns, and very close to that because the only swingy zone is out of the way. The Pyramid should take ~50 turns, stars should take ~30 turns, and Accordion/Digital Key/Whatever should take maybe 15, pessimistically. That meas that on day 11, I'll have ~95 turns to deal with tower stuff, which is enough for several significant screws and some powerleveling if that's necessary. And I already have pepper.

Today was war day, so it was pretty mechanical. Mostly doing things in increasing order of moxie requirement.
===Day 10===

[1179-1184] Other Back 40 [62,60,153]
+> [1184] Got magical ice cubes
-> Turn [1184] Mosquito
Today features some of me using random familiars where it doesn't matter. If they're level 4, then I can get them to 20 with buffs/whistle.
[1185-1186] Lord Spookyraven [34,34,56]
I got beat up once. I went back in with the exact same strategy, because I am bad at learning, but it worked the second time. Handled resistance with a Can of Black Paint, because I'm doing good on meat.
[1187-1192] The Upper Chamber [46,61,106]
+> [1192] Got carved wooden wheel
[1193-1197] Back 40 [60,56,112]
-> Turn [1195] Barrrnacle
[1198-1202] Pond [49,63,114]
-> Turn [1199] Sabre-Toothed Lime
[1203-1209] The Middle Chamber [44,43,86]
[1210] The Lower Chambers (Token/Empty) [0,0,0]
[1211-1218] The Middle Chamber [49,45,85]
[1219] The Lower Chambers (Rubble/Bomb) [0,0,0]
[1220-1223] The Middle Chamber [12,9,22]
[1224] The Lower Chambers (Empty/Empty/Ed's Chamber) [0,0,0]
Incredible 21-turn Middle Chamber.
[1225-1233] Ed the Undying [177,186,330]
o> Drank 1 corpse on the beach (20 adventures gained) [0,74,0]
I get killed the first time, on about form 3.
-> Turn [1233] Baby Gravy Fairy
[1235-1253] Hole in the Sky [173,202,406]
+> [1237] Got star chart
[1254] Menagerie 2 [5,4,7]
o> Drank 1 corpsetini (21 adventures gained) [0,0,75]
[1255-1261] Hole in the Sky [86,69,148]
+> [1260] Got star chart
[1262] Menagerie 2 [0,0,0]
#> [1262] Semirare: Rokay, Raggy!
I can't get another Inhaler because I just got one. This will let me not be hosed if I don't have the second of the NS familars and it takes me more than ten turns to find and level it.
[1263-1271] Hole in the Sky [91,117,188]
+> [1271] Got star chart
o> Drank 1 corpsetini (19 adventures gained) [0,0,72]
At this point it becomes obvious that charts, and not stars and lines are my limiting factor, so I swap familiars.
-> Turn [1267] Blood-Faced Volleyball
-> Turn [1271] Leprechaun
=> Level 10 (Turn 1271)! (85/81/138)
This is just blatantly wrong. I'm definitely level 12. I think my Log Visualizer is out of date.
[1272-1277] Post-Cyrpt Cemetary [12,28,41]
+> [1273] Got loose teeth
+> [1276] Got loose teeth, skeleton bone
%> [1277] Badmoon: When Do We Want It?
I get this adventure, use my inhaler, and grab the Styx Pixie Buff and some nasal spray. I don't get the Demon Buff because I am dumb and forget. I'm using a Star Crossbow as a weapon now; while it doesn't hit as hard as the Magilaser Blastercannon, I need the moxie when I'm wearing the war outfit. (Which costs me 22 moxie compared to my regular duds, since I give up the Pygmy Nose Bone, Chaps, and Top Hat.) I should probably have also bought Greed and/or Nimble Fingers, but that probably cost me only a few turns, tops. I do use the +30% meat disco combo, which ironically makes a dent in my own meat supply.
[1278-1308] Themthar Hills [331,335,677]
o> Ate 2 peach pie (24 adventures gained) [0,0,68]
-> Turn [1308] Blood-Faced Volleyball
[1309-1312] Hole in the Sky [41,39,95]
+> [1312] Got star chart
HitS complete.
[1313-1338] Battlefield (Hippy Uniform) [269,310,603]
+> [1323] Got beer helmet
+> [1326] Got distressed denim pants
+> [1327] Got little paper umbrella, magical ice cubes
o> Ate 3 peach pie (34 adventures gained) [0,0,122]
-> Turn [1321] Baby Gravy Fairy
I'm concerned about being able to afford nets/poultices, so I swap in the fairy for a bit.
[1339-1343] Next to that Barrel with Something Burning in it [50,42,88]
+> [1343] Got molybdenum hammer
[1344-1347] Over Where the Old Tires Are [43,41,92]
+> [1344] Got gremlin juice
+> [1347] Got molybdenum crescent wrench
o> Drank 1 shot of blackberry schnapps (2 adventures gained) [6,5,5]
[1348-1349] Near an Abandoned Refrigerator [12,9,27]
+> [1349] Got molybdenum pliers
[1350-1352] Out By that Rusted-Out Car [30,39,73]
+> [1352] Got molybdenum screwdriver
-> Turn [1350] Blood-Faced Volleyball
Gremlins don't go too bad. I kill one by mistake when it might have had the tool, and I'm forced to kill another because he doesn't use it fast enough.
[1353-1354] Battlefield (Hippy Uniform) [29,24,48]
o> Drank 1 Corpse Island iced tea (23 adventures gained) [30,29,29]
End the day with 23 adventures, so I'm starting tomorrow with 66. (I have a Chrome Weapon, but no maid.) Also, at this point I remember my zap, and really luck out by zapping the disco mask into an accordion. The war will take 50 adventures plus whatever I lose to beaten up (good luck with that so far, but I'm going to fall behind on moxie soon.) I then need to figure out how to beat The Man, and I need about eight more white pixels. I should clear tomorrow with little problem, barring catastrophe. I have black pepper, so I guess the thing I'm most worried about is a bronzed locust or a south-of-the-border item that I get unlucky with.

I make a ton of major mistakes today, hugely inflating my turncount. This is mostly because I am bad at Mafia. Anyway, it was never really in doubt that I was going to make it today, it was just a matter of turns. I had mostly good luck.
===Day 11===

[1355-1412] Battlefield (Hippy Uniform) [659,592,1242]
o> Ate 1 fortune cookie (1 adventures gained) [0,0,0]
There's actually nothing very useful for me to do with this and I'll probably finish before it matters, but I take it just in case. I do end up using it. Worst case I can get eyedrops or something to help with a heinous tower item.
-> Turn [1386] Baby Gravy Fairy
[1413-1418] 8-Bit Realm [12,16,19]
Beat up on the battlefield. The Grill guys are too tough for me.
[1419-1420] Haunted Ballroom [6,3,168]
o> Ate 1 peach pie (8 adventures gained) [0,0,42]
[1421] Black Forest [8,7,18]
-> Turn [1421] Sabre-Toothed Lime
[1422] The Man [70,70,124]
+> [1422] Got Boris's key, disembodied brain
I throw on my most moxie-maximizing gear, and kill him with bombs. I have a lot of bombs.
o> Drank 2 perpendicular hula (25 adventures gained) [0,0,70]
[1423] Mix 4 fermenting powder + 4 grapes [0,0,0]
[1427] Cook 18 Gnollish pie tin + 18 wad of dough [0,0,0]
-> Turn [1427] Baby Gravy Fairy
I'm terrible at Mafia. I somehow don't have a broken skull, so I blow up my in-a-boxes. I don't notice that Mafia isn't set to stop trying after the box blows up, so I blow 22 turns here, inflating my turncount. Also, neither one yields a skull anyway.
[1445-1448] Guano Junction [7,8,10]
+> [1445] Got baseball
+> [1446] Got sonar-in-a-biscuit
+> [1448] Got broken skull, loose teeth, loose teeth, loose teeth
+> [1448] Got loose teeth, loose teeth, loose teeth, loose teeth
+> [1448] Got skeleton bone, skeleton bone, skeleton bone, skeleton bone
+> [1448] Got skeleton bone, skeleton bone
o> Ate 3 peach pie (34 adventures gained) [0,0,118]
[1449] Sorceress' Hedge Maze [15,17,30]
[1450] Pirate Cove [0,0,0]
#> [1450] Semirare: Yo Ho Ho and a Bottle of Whatever This Is
I get this because I'm having a tough time killing the golems.
[1451-1456] Sorceress' Hedge Maze [71,56,115]
[1457] Sorceress Tower: Level 1 [12,14,16]
[1458] Sorceress Tower: Level 2 [8,14,20]
[1459] Sorceress Tower: Level 3 [7,12,23]
[1460] Sorceress Tower: Level 4 [7,14,21]
[1461] Sorceress Tower: Level 5 [7,14,21]
[1462] Sorceress Tower: Level 6 [17,4,21]
6/6 on tower items. One was to bowling cricket, so I would have had to go back to the Bat Hole anyway, even if I didn't need a skull.
[1463] Sorceress Tower: Shadow Fight [52,54,96]
-> Turn [1463] Mosquito
Have a mosquito for the first one. Second thing I need is the potato, one of the two I don't have.
[1464-1471] Haunted Conservatory [12,10,18]
%> [1471] Badmoon: The Placebo Defect
+> [1471] Got potato sprout
-> Turn [1471] Levitating Potato
Doesn't take too long to get it. Now I need to get it to level four.
[1473-1481] Cake-Shaped Arena [0,0,0]
o> Drank 1 corpse on the beach (20 adventures gained) [0,73,0]
-> Turn [1481] Baby Gravy Fairy
Takes a few extra turns to level it because I let Mafia do it and it tries ones that it can't possibly win.
[1482-1501] Haunted Ballroom [115,109,819]
%> [1483] Badmoon: Party Crasher
I calculate that even with deleveling, I'm going to need a few more moxie to handle the sorceress. The leveling is phenomenally unsuccessful, yielding zero dance cards even with all the familiar weight buffs I'm carrying.
-> Turn [1501] Barrrnacle
[1502] Sorceress Tower: Naughty Sorceress [119,145,238]
First shot, she goes down. I make my first ever leaderboard. (At some point I fell backwards onto the BMPM leaderboard when a bunch of runs, probably from a contest, fell off, but I actually made this one fair and square.) The attachment shows the leaderboard, where I'm in second behind Phel, who was kind enough to give me some tips for the run and whose log was one that I was reading.

FAMILIARS
----------
Baby Gravy Fairy : 597 combat turns (56.8%)
Blood-Faced Volleyball : 309 combat turns (29.4%)
Leprechaun : 76 combat turns (7.2%)
Sabre-Toothed Lime : 22 combat turns (2.1%)
Barrrnacle : 19 combat turns (1.8%)
Mosquito : 17 combat turns (1.6%)
none : 11 combat turns (1.0%)
Not a ton to comment on here. I think this is pretty normal familiar use. (I got the tower familiar to level four in places where I didn't need items and once it was clear I was going to be fine on stats.) I don't think the 120 mainstat I lose by using them instead of a volleyball really affected the run too much.

I ended the run with meat, which means that I could have been using stuff in more places. (And I would have ended the run with far more meat if I didn't have to blow up both my box servants.)

I only got one lucre. I could have gotten a lucre later on, from Mechs, but I didn't because I forgot.

Props to phel and HippoKing, whose logs were a big help, especially early, and to salticid, whose BM guide was also a big help.

Comments welcome and very encouraged! This is my first go at BM speed, and while I've read a lot of guides, I'd love to hear advice from people.

That's a great run, considering that your luck was pretty poor in places.

You've probably already identified where you have room to cut many turns -- like the knoll, overcrafting, barrels (maybe), et cetera -- and you might be able to cut a few turns here and there in many places.

I would do the math to see if a 31 turn Nuns quest is worth it. A constant challenge for me is to cut the amount of turns I spend powerlevelling and generally overlevelling, especially from 12>13.

Keep at it!

If you're doing the junkyard but not the Arena or Beach, skipping the nuns results in 48 turns on the Battlefield to open the Junkyard, and then 101 turns to finish after the junkyard, for 149 turns total. If you do the nuns, it takes 24 turns to open the Junkyard, and then 51 to finish, for a total of 75 turns*, which means that a Nuns of up to 74 turns is worth it. There's some other tradeoffs, like the fact that the stuff that hippies drop is worth something and spending more turns on the battlefield means a greater chance of getting a useful hero drop. (Or, in my case, getting beaten up by the Streaker), but if you skip the nuns you can get a different SR. I'm still pretty sure that it's almost always worth it to nuns as a hippie unless you really have nothing.

* I spent 86 because I got beat up/had to CLEESH/had to run away a few times and could not kill naughty sorority nurses.

nice run, very nice first BM speed run at 11 days? way faster than my first attempt...

I agree with the nuns deal, 30 turns is worth it. DBs don't need stuff on the battlefield as much( don't have to get 20 macrame nets for the NS like some classes)...

No drums, that sucks? All the cool stuff you get from the island including a drum is why I've been converted to an island hippy outfit getter guy...

No spring? Did you still have your meat engine from your bitchin meat car that you were saving for a meat maid that never panned out?

I guess you did this run before the skill prices were reduced.... now disco combos only cost 5K !!!

My only suggestion is controversial: semi rares, lunchboxes, KGE captain, tarts, one inhaler, one pet snack, maybe bad ascii art if scrolls don't drop after a few turns in there and maybe distilled wines as a DB food is harder to come by... skip eyedrops and get flushed, probably get a towel as well in the bathroom... skip message oils, skip a second inhaler if you get the candles and stuff to use for a greed scroll, you won't need a second inhaler...

It's very hard to have any clue how many days a run will take. Even after you're basically done with the level 12 quest you still have a no telescope tower to get through without olfaction or clovers... I think maximizing turns is the safest way to hit day count.

anywayz nice job on your run....

Thanks! My first attempt at going fastish in BM was a 14-day PM run, so I wasn't totally fresh or anything.

- I probably did still have the meat engine. I probably just plain forgot about it.
- Yeah, this run was before the cost adjustment. On the other hand, it was also before the Boss Bat became bell-proof, although I don't know that belling the boss bat is really an awesome idea for speed anyway.
- I've been thinking a lot about consumable SRs and SRs in general. I think that the sort of "non-negotiable" semi-rares are the KGE, an inhaler, and a Pet Snacks. Assuming a Magic Whistle and Pet-buffing spray, you need to get 13 lbs from other sources as most classes.
I may have done the math wrong, but I think that in the best case (which is the worst case - you don't have the second tower familiar and it takes you so long to get it that your other buffs run out, and you have no non-spray source of pet weight, and you get a lead necklace at the arena while leveling it there, and you didn't get a Magic Whistle), a second pet snacks saves about 22 turns (Roughly the arena time it'd take to get a familiar from 5 lbs in the arena, which you have to do anyway, to 12 lbs, which is what you need with the lead necklace you just won and spray. 22 turns is pretty nice for an SR, but it's normally saving way less than that, and will often save zero. (And cost the turn it took to get and you also used a fullness on just a fortune cookie.) In the future, I believe I'll be skipping the second pet snacks; the screw you encounter isn't as bad as I thought. (I might get it if I'm really positive on daycount, like if I start the day halfway up the tower with my SR due in a turn, but I'm missing several tower familiars.)

as far as the tower familiars go the saber-lime and mosquito should always be able to get, plus a spare cheese from the goatlet...

so that leaves the barrrnacle, anti-cheese, potato.

Anti-cheese unhydrated is a BM delay() superlikely.....
The placebo defect aka potato in the conservatory is a delay() superlikely as well BUT I'm pretty sure that delay() might be equal to the nightstand in the bedroom. Actually remembering if you have a quick nightstand means that you can get a quick potato is even more than I've ever bothered to test.

In my experience I don't ever remember getting a potato in less than 10 turns from the conservatory though you got lucky and in all of my muscle BM runs where I unlocked the gallery I never have seen a potato before the key. Which makes me believe that the delay() on the BM adventure is equal to or more than the key.

last but not least is the barrrrrnacle. Getting it in under 10 turns when I don't get it while getting fledges in the Fcle is a miracle. I've odor extractored the dang pirate and almost didn't get the dang thing before.... freaking barnacle has stopped more of my runs from being 1 day better many times.

Now do I have a point to all this rambling, yes I do. On day whatever when you beat the shadow and face the first giant familiar with less than 5 of the tower familiars, you have basically all the information that you need.

1. You know the first familiar that you need.
2. You know how many turns you have left for the day... basically if you're a moxie class then all but a few of them could be used to farm the familiars or at least burn the delay() on the anti cheese and potato.... if you need a barrnacle for the 2nd familiar then you should immediately sacrifice a goat to the RNG...

If you have all 5 then you're home free...

More comments about the run I guess.

The hellavator should not be used to get any of the pointless crap from bosses, infact using it at all as a moxie class lowers the chances of getting the jump, which can hurt the chances of pickpocketing stuff.

Britches get overtaken by elite pants or swashbuckling pants so quick that it's not definitely not worth it. The cape? I guess it will have more moxie than other accessories for quite awhile but I still don't think it's worth spending turns trying to get the correct floor...

I'm pretty sure I generally spend less turns in the conservatory looking for a potato than in the bedroom waiting for the moxie adventure, and it usually comes between 9-12 turns (usually 10, just as my pet snacks go away).

It'sa good idea to farm the familiars with free turns -- though I have never done that in a speed run. I should, probably.

As to whether to use the hellavator in general, I'm torn; results have been good when it's turned on early (max) and left on all run, but that may not be the best option as suggested by overlevelling. It's best use is early and late; it hurts questing in the middle game (i.e. 6-11).

I think it depends some on the class; if it's keeping you from adventuring where you want, then it's not really much of a benefit. (Though you have to remember that having it on means your stats will be a little higher, which helps compensate a little.) An Accordion Thief, who has Madrigal available and who I think is more likely to make a Legendary Epic Weapon than a Disco Bandit, will typically not get shut out of zones by the extra ML, except for the few zones that are a little tough for when you encounter them. (Friars and DoD hurt the most because those are things where you often benefit from getting them a day early. For example, on my current run, I really need a zap for the bugbear beanie, and a zap can mean eating key lime pies a day earlier or eating mainstat key lime pies (which is a ton of stats.))

I think everyone would agree that excessive fiddling with the Hellevator isn't a great plan. The fastest non-crimbo BM runs are about 1300 turns, and 1400 is more realistic (but still quite fast). Assuming a 75% combat rate across the run, keeping the Hellevator on 11 is 1440 mainstat over the course of a run, spread out over the course of a run. That's a lot, certainly worth the turn it takes to turn it on, all else being equal. Even only getting it to 8 is 1050 stats. I'm wondering if it might be worth it to turn it on early when the stats are most valuable and to kill it when it starts to interfere with your going where you want to go. That cuts the total number of stats it gives, but you're going to want to eventually kill it anyway, especially as a moxie class. (There's a big difference between trying to outmoxie the NS at her base and trying to do it at +11 ML.) 1.3 mainstat/combat is worth more early than late anyhow.

I'm kind of just spitballing here, and there's a ton of things that are harder to pin down, like the value of getting the jump. My intuition is that it's generally worth having the Hellevator on for a while, but that there's a lot of factors that affect when it should go on and come off.

EDIT: I'm really enjoying this discussion - it's cool to have two of the best BM players in the game to talk to. :)

I'm hardly one of the best (e.g. Frank, Omri, Appehat, Oxbarn, et cetera), just one of the most persistent. Frank and I bounce ideas off one another on a not infrequent basis.

I agree that as an AT, I set +ML as soon as I can cast madrigal consistently. As a TT, I'm usually powerlevelling at +35ML or higher (for any non-BM players out there, that's reasonably high). As a SA, I usually leave off ML until after the friars -- but I'm also playing as faux-moxie withOUT potions until then. I think. Maybe.

The big question is still when to turn it on, and whether to turn it off. My gut is that earlier is better and leave it on until the NS (if necessary). In the very early game, there's +stats from pride and volley as well; it's not that hard to hit level 5 on the first day (or wasn't, before the fullness change). There's plenty of low-level stuff to do; I agree that survivability only really comes into play for the friars and a few other spots.

I've also turned on the ML just for flyering; I invite number crunching to see if it's worth it -- usually for HitS and pyramid (and sometimes pixels). That's enough to finish flyering most of the time.

Another consideration for ML is whether one can rush to level 9 by the third semirare interval -- I've only managed that once, but have come very close a few times. If you can hit that (and pirate outfit to open chasm), then that alleviates the need to eat the third fortune cookie (and likely the fourth in the castle; one might even manage a second inhaler) which should be better in the end - though maybe it would be better to get the lunchbox in any event.

I used to rush to the zap wand to complete the bugbear and hippy outfits (if needed) but since the revamp, that's not really a viable strategy for me.

First off phel I'm not suggesting getting the potato from the conservatory I'm suggesting burning a few turns~ 5 in there before using pet snacks incase you need to get the potato...

strategy definitely varies class to class run to run etc. More stats is awesome but more difficult combat in BM is not something that is easy to deal with... for some classes/runs I've turned the hellavator on as soon turn ~ 80 and sometimes I wait till after I kill the bonerdagon... this current run I'm on I haven't turned it on at all since I'm just trying to put up a decent 10/11 day run before the kittycore contest.

Salti replied in a DitR thread that turning the hellavator on at turn 1 ( completely suicidal idea) and leaving it there the entire run only saved 12 turns. That seems off to me...

That seems low, but I'm no expert. With my assumptions from the post before, it's worth 1440 mainstat. While that may only be 12 turns of efficient powerleveling, stats are not equally valuable at all points during a run. Earlier stats represent earlier access to a wide variety of things, and I think it's hard to put anything like an exact number on that, plus it'll vary from run to run. (Some runs you'll really want the zap wand early, while other runs you'll complete outfits and stuff fine without it.)

On the other hand, running +ML means missed pickpockets for moxie classes and increased fight costs for most classes, which is also hard to quantify as exact turn savings.

1440 stats is a lot. 12 Powerleveling turns is a lot when your only non combat modifier is the song in the ballroom and there's no clovers.

Getting jumped by monsters as a moxie class means no pickpocket but not getting the jump as a pastamancer might mean instant death in some areas.

oh and phel's a lot better at BM than me, don't let him fool you there...
