The Downstairs Frank's BM DB 10/1337 ( no stat days)

Post by Mister Mickey » Sun Oct 24, 2010 4:20 am

I've been chaining DB runs a few runs now basically since I know I can easily get a 10 day run without stat days or a 9 day run pretty easily with them.

My goal is to get a 9 day DB run without stat days. My last run without stat days I got ten days, but 9 days was far out of reach.

*edit: I could've made 9 days thanks to an awesome tower but I didn't finish drinking day 7 so I wound up short...

I'm posting this to see if there's anything I'm doing that is just stupidly wrong. I don't know everything about BM, I just think I do and sometimes I end up getting these crazy schemes when there's a better way to accomplish something.

My main goals in BM are turn maximizing and RNG minimizing. Get as many turns as I can to battle the RNG and try and minimize the possibilities of RNG screwage. An example of me minimizing RNG screwage? I use 233% item drop or more for the Fcle to guarantee the drops from the pirates. Does the RNG screw me still? Yes by not giving me all three pirates in 10 turns or less. Another strategy I try to follow is trying to avoid high range foods.

===Day 1===

[0] Ascension Start [0,0,0]
[1-8] Haunted Pantry [0,8,2]
     +> [1] Got razor-sharp can lid
     o> Ate 1 Brimstone Chicken Sandwich (6 adventures gained) [-27,0,29]
     => Level 2 (Turn 8)! (0/3/6)

I always start with the pantry from the get go for the chance of getting the Dolphin King map. The crown is +2 to all stats which makes passing the first guild challenge way easier, also tomatoes for mix drinks / schnapps. Finding fruit is difficult early on.

I get the map! Buy the snorkel and the resulting meat gets me over 300 for hell food so I don't bother with trying to pass the guild test yet, since I could possibly fail.

[9-17] Spooky Forest [1,8,2]
     +> [16] Got mosquito larva
     %> [17] Badmoon: This Doesn't Look Like Candy Mountain
     o> Ate 4 Brimstone Chicken Sandwich (18 adventures gained) [-104,0,108]
     => Level 3 (Turn 17)! (0/4/12)

Get the meat for the terrarium which I don't bother buying yet, then the unicorn meat to eat to 15 fullness.

[18] Guild Challenge [0,0,0]
     o> Used 2 giant moxie weed [0,0,13]
     => Level 4 (Turn 18)! (0/4/13)

Buy pride with the EW meat, and I use the moxie weeds instead of selling them.

Code: Select all

[19-28] Spooky Forest [17,9,17]
     +> [22] Got Spooky Temple map
     +> [28] Got filthy lucre

Today was a spooky forest bounty and I'd already found one triffid. I figured it was worth completing the bounty today for the chance of another good one tomorrow.

     +> [36] Got bottle of tequila
     +> [37] Got bottle of rum
     o> Drank 1 wine spritzer (5 adventures gained) [0,12,0]

Barrels suck so bad. I got 1 mixed drink and one base booze that I could mix with soda water.

I wouldn't have bothered with the barrels had I waited a couple more hours to ascend. The tavern was updated right after I finished it, which will mean that this is probably the last time I'll ever adventure in the barrel full of barrels. :)

     +> [38] Got worthless knick-knack
     o> Drank 1 whiskey and soda (6 adventures gained) [0,13,0]
     -> Turn [38] Blood-Faced Volleyball

It took forever to get the trinkets for the volleyball. I'm dangerously low on meat now, like single digit low on meat so I had to use the mosquito to make sure I stayed at close to max HP because I can't really afford healing items.

I'm killing the rats by doing suckerpuches mostly. My disco ball only does 1-3 damage and fumbles cost me HP. My HP total is really low because of the hell foods.

Found the baron. I used to not bother with him, unless I had a long faucet but as a moxie class he's so easy to defeat and the fact that there's a gap in stuff to do before level 6 means it's probably worth killing him. Now that the cellar has been re-done, I'm going to venture to guess that a 10% item drop accessory might be worth the trouble.

     %> [65] Badmoon: Sandwiched in the Club

A couple cool things happen, #1 is the bum cheek so I can get into the guano junction without waiting till level 5 for the harem veil. #2 is the harold's bell quest- probably save me a few turns in the goatlet.

4 straight times the rat got the jump on me, the 4th time though he decided to have a cup of tea instead of attack me. I used my hella smooth buff thinking I needed the extra moxie to kill the rat? Maybe I did yeah I'll go with that. It would've been way more helpful in the junction.

[96] 8-Bit Realm [0,0,0]

11 turn grassi knoll, got half the bugbear outfit, no skirt and no extra springs.

3 adventures left and 19 sub stats to level 5, if I could survive the 8 bit it might have worked but I also only have 2300 meat, so I can't waste any meat on healing so there wasn't any possible way for me to hit level 5 that I can think of... tavern revamp though makes it trivial from now on, I think.

     +> [134] Got baseball
     +> [136] Got broken skull, loose teeth

That's pretty much an epic fail on hella smooth in the junction, 11 turns of hella smooth for one sonar.

Non combat in the dungeon is so swingy sometimes. All I know is I spent 25 turns in the dungeon before hitting the mushroom non combat choice adventure one time. Spending turns trying for a quick second one was just more stupid. I ended up with 4 full sets of the bugbear outfit plus one more pants.

The reason I should've waited with the bean burrito is I could've got a spice from the kitchen to spice it. Getting a jalepeno from the hermit is just a matter of meat now too, I'm probably just bitter about getting 3 adventures from a three fullness food.

I needed the outskirts BM buff to pass the muscle test, I need the pantry one to pass the myst stat test. I learn a valuable lesson right here. Don't trust the wiki and mind the buffed main stat.

I have enough myst to possibly pass the test but I don't have a buffed main stat of 15 which is required to adventure in the DD apparently. I adjust my equipment and buff to get it up to 15 and get a "you're not strong enough to adventure in here" while I trying to click on the test. I have no idea, I guess there's a minimum muscle requirement?

I unlocked the ruins before getting the BM adventure, I have two chef hats and an unlocked fun house ( as well as a fun house bounty at the moment). I really don't think making a chef-in-a-box is worth it though...

at best I'm going to get 14 limes, plus the grue egg omelet. There's very little chance I'll get a brain and a box in less turns than that. The only advantage I can see is getting some fruit to mix with base booze for my ACs

Turn rundown finished!

I'd have preferred to get a key from the DD, breathe spray is the 2nd best thing though. It has a myst stat requirement of 25 though, which sucks because I'm still a ways off from that.

Thanks Ringwraith, GL back at you. I guess logging the run is just a way to force myself to critically analyze the mistakes if I fail. If I don't fail I'm going to chalk up my success to the RNG.

So before day 3 starts I notice there's a hippy bounty but that isn't all another spooky forest one too! I'm pretty sure that unlocking the rest of the hidden temple and getting torso would be enough to get that lucre or I'll be close. Couple spices for spiced rum or hunting vampires and torso should be enough if I get bad RNG with the triffids.

Day 3 liver has become something that seems simple since the Friars revamp. Knowing there's a cap on the turns it takes per area makes it not seem so scary.

I want to get the harem out of the way before my semi rare. I know it was crazy luck but I once got the entire KGE outfit to drop from a couple guards after I'd already got the KGE semi rare. I only see one guard and get nothing.

Another thing is the cymbal weapon from the harem girl, they're +20 MP, I know for a fact I'm going to be "chugging" a couple Dr Lucifers in the friars so I kinda wanted to see if I got that thing too.

11 fullness left for the day, and 3 turns currently. My best bet is probably 3 cherry pies +filler. KLPs are out of reach. A key would take too many turns to get. There's only one locked door and I don't have a skeleton key, also a legend key is not guaranteed to drop from the DD so best wait till tomorrow, when I'll have skeleton keys.

I decided to use the volleyball for the friars to gain more stats. Pumping up the fairy seems like it would've been a better idea but I've been to this rodeo before. If I use a fairy I don't gain enough stats to hit level 7 till after I'm done lime hunting. If I use a volleyball then I get enough stats to hit level 7 before I'm done lime hunting, maybe even before I start. Which means disco concentration and 20% more item drop against fruit golems. I'm sure that trumps the 2 lbs the fairy would've gained had I used it the entire time for my liver.

[306] Friar's Gate [0,0,0]
     +> [306] Got steel margarita
     o> Drank 1 ocean motion (14 adventures gained) [27,9,0]

3 limes, 6 cherries and 5 oranges so far.... when I hit level 7(one more moxie point) I'll have enough meat to buy the skill to do disco concentration, I'll still have a "pretty good" pile of meat to use for seltzers as well, I think.

I'm sitting at 7,435 meat, 40 turns banked and I still have the 5,000 BM meat adventure to get. Disco II doom costs 5k and I'll be bleeding meat like crazy if I do 15 MP per fruit golem. All for the chance at a couple extra limes. It seems worth it though.

I'm using the blow gun, little round pebble from the haiku dungeon, infernal insoles ( got 4 of them from the friars) and ODSSP for 80% initiative.

Why is 80% initiative important? It guarantees me the jump against fruit golems 100% of the time.

I like little round pebbles they are equal to lust without the bad effects, except needing a one handed moxie weapon and getting them stolen if I lose initiative... well I mean I get to choose when I need "fake lust" and when I don't need it.

I think I'm just trying to justify the 34 turns in the haiku dungeon for the non combat to show up one time. I did burn off a lot of terrible BM effects so I guess it wasn't a total wash.

I ended up only grabbing 2/3 of the shore items and trying for ice cubes. I don't know if it was worth the risk but I didn't really want to shore in the middle of the liver quest. I suppose I didn't have to do the last shore trip today, I chalk that mistake up to wishful thinking for ice cubes. Hopefully I don't need a barb-wire fence.

I was hoping you'd log one of these. I can't presume to give you any advice, but I can puke numbers.

Only getting two of the three shore items costs less than 1.33... turns. (A 1/3 chance of needing to either spend four turns or use a wand zap.) Without a bartender, each ice cube is worth 3 turns (and some meat and stats) over drinking fine wine/imported beer, for a total of 9 turns gained. There's 10 adventures there, so the odds of getting ice cubes is about 1/10 (uh, assuming the adventures are equally likely), so going for cubes is worth .9 adventures. The difference between .9 and 1.33 is small enough that it's basically a wash in my mind, plus you have greater freedom in deciding when to do the last shoring.

Each cube is 4, I believe (8 adv. for 4 fullness from schnapps or imported beer, 12 adv. for 4 fullness on average from an AC), making it 1.2, even more favorable, assuming all your other assumptions are correct.

Good luck, Frank. I can't wait to eventually get a few 3-day HCNP runs so I can chill out and start playing some more BM ascensions and give you some competition ;)

I hacked an adventure off for the crafting time. If you are a DB and making a Bartender, I think it's actively better to shoot for cubes, since 1.2 turns in the middle of your run is worth more than 1.33 turns at the end of the tower. Slightly. Insignificantly. Also, if you don't have torso, then the odds of getting cubes is 1/9, making the turn expectation without a bartender 1, rather than .9; also, the failure conditions on shooting for cubes include the fence itself, 4 fullness worth of 1.75 Adv/full food and some meat, and 6 fullness worth of 1.75 Adv/full food that gives lots of moxie and MP.

Ultimately, we're talking about severe fractional turn amounts; if you get beaten up or something and shoring's an appealing way to get rid of it, you might as well do that.

Good luck with those three dayers, after reading all the mistakes that Ex's made I'm convinced they have to be fairly easy to accomplish.

I have to spend a turn to craft the ACs without inigo's or a bartender. They're still better than 2.0 adv/fullness but that one adventure turns it from 10-14 to a net of 9-13, I also like the 35ish moxie stats though, what is that half a powerleveling turn as speedster's call it?

That was ninja'd by Lespectre I just noticed.

Lespectre wrote:I was hoping you'd log one of these. I can't presume to give you any advice, but I can puke numbers.

Thanks that makes me feel like my gut instinct of wasting 4 turns on the 6th floor of the tower beats trying to find somewhere to survive with 1 or 2 horrible BM effects.

I have posted a 9 day run that I've done, the 1240 one. I actually posted in HCOxy and in HoD forums just to test how many comments I got.

One from HoD and zero from HCOxy. Oh well...

Here's the link the HoD one which I cleaned up more for a walk through instead of complaining about the RNG like I normally do...

Notice I posted it a month ago and think about all the game has changed since then. Tavern revamp, I talk about buying the 50 meat cocktailing kit which doesn't happen anymore, the sewers never exsisted now, semi rare range is earlier than it used to be and also the n00b cave change has happened since then. Anything else I'm probably forgetting something...

Before I even completed day one on this run my strategy for BM changed from now on(tavern revamp). Maybe it will stay that way at least until I get a chance to start the next run...

Maybe more than half since BM powerleveling isn't quite as efficient. I'm too lazy to do the calculations to know how much a powerleveling turn is under various circumstances - I probably should know these things.

I learned something I didn't know. I mean I should've know it, the 3 shore tower items are a zap group.

It's a noticeable amount of stats.

The value of 35 stats varies pretty wildly. In softcore it's either 1/3 of a turn or 1/8-1/10 of a turn, depending on whether you powerlevel normally, or with dance cards and clovers exclusively. I'm pretty sure in hardcore it's a little worse than 1/2 of a turn, since you will need to powerlevel earlier than in softcore, and the scaling gains make it a little less efficient. In BM, it's probably a little better than 1/2 a turn; depending on the run it might be as good as a full turn or better.

No good bounties today... which means I'll probably do the spooky forest and get the lucre and get the temple unlock over with...

Code: Select all

===Day 4===

[307] Mix 1 margarita + 1 magical ice cubes [0,0,0]
     o> Drank 1 calle de miel (10 adventures gained) [10,0,26]
[308] Friar's Gate [3,6,4]
Clicked on last adventure without even reading it thinking I'd get sent back to the menagerie, would've worked except for the fact that the steel margarita was my final turn yesterday.

I mixed the moxie drink to hit level 7 faster. Probably not worth it but today was not a day of me being optimal today was a day where I didn't have enough time to play turns...

Code: Select all

[309-334] Menagerie 1 [106,105,231]
     +> [309] Got lime
     +> [311] Got lime
     +> [316] Got lime
     +> [323] Got lime
     +> [325] Got lime
     +> [328] Got lime
     +> [329] Got lime
     +> [332] Got lime
     => Level 7 (Turn 309)! (22/29/40)
I get 11 limes, that is probably going to work, if I don't score a key today, then it will definitely work.

Code: Select all

[335-339] Whitey's Grove [20,18,27]
     +> [336] Got bird rib
I needed the meat from whitey's grove and I had 3 burrito blessing turns left. Paid off nicely.

Code: Select all

[340-341] Defiled Nook [8,5,24]
     +> [341] Got loose teeth, skeleton bone
     -> Turn [341] Blood-Faced Volleyball
[342] Daily Dungeon [1,3,7]
[343] Heartbreaker's Hotel [0,0,0]
8 is the highest number it gives me. I guess that will work, I don't think it's worth trying to use more turns to get 2 or 3 more ML is it?

Code: Select all

[344-349] Daily Dungeon [4,5,18]
     +> [349] Got Boris's key
     o> Used 1 suntan lotion of moxiousness [0,0,9]
[350-353] Whitey's Grove [3,3,12]
     %> [353] Badmoon: A White Lie
     -> Turn [350] Baby Gravy Fairy
     -> Turn [353] Blood-Faced Volleyball
[354-364] Haunted Billiards Room [33,26,64]
     +> [362] Got pool cue
[365-378] Haunted Library [57,55,113]
     +> [368] Got inkwell
     +> [378] Got little paper umbrella, little paper umbrella
     -> Turn [365] Baby Gravy Fairy
I get enough parts to make 4 AFUE scrolls. If I get the candles for 2 of them I might summon Axgoth drinks just because I can... otherwise I have 3 tattered scraps yay... I seriously considered switching to the volleyball for stats after getting enough parts for 2 scrolls plus an extra two scraps and an extra inkwell but I figured that a better shot at more tattered scraps would be worth more than the stats of a 11 lb volleyball.

I also got the spell book non combat, that's the easiest 2k meat I've got this run for sure.

Code: Select all

[379-381] Pirate Cove [10,3,8]
     +> [379] Got swashbuckling pants
     +> [380] Got eyepatch
     +> [381] Got stuffed shoulder parrot
I kinda wanted some rum the bar would be difficult to survive in at the moment. Moving on...

Code: Select all

     o> Drank 3 snifter of thoroughly aged brandy (10 adventures gained) [0,29,0]
[382-383] Defiled Alcove [7,11,19]
     +> [382] Got loose teeth
[384] Cook 1 Boris's key lime + 1 pie crust [0,0,0]
     o> Ate 1 Boris's key lime pie (15 adventures gained) [29,0,0]
[385] Cook 1 Boris's key lime + 1 pie crust [0,0,0]
     o> Ate 1 Boris's key lime pie (15 adventures gained) [31,0,0]
     o> Ate 2 cherry pie (21 adventures gained) [0,19,0]
That's 3.5 adventures for cherry and KLPs after factoring the turns to cook KLPs right? If only cherries could be bought at the hippy fruit stand..

Code: Select all

[386-393] Haunted Bedroom [0,47,44]
     +> [387] Got Lord Spookyraven's spectacles
     o> Drank 3 shot of orange schnapps (6 adventures gained) [10,0,0]
     -> Turn [393] none
[394-419] Spooky Forest [60,76,110]
     +> [395] Got Spooky-Gro fertilizer
     +> [408] Got spooky sapling
     +> [416] Got filthy lucre
     %> [419] Badmoon: That's My Favorite Kind of Contraption
Fought 3 triffids and got 2 vampire hearts. 0 normal combat vampires after the stakes, from now on I'm just going to go with spices I think.

Code: Select all

     +> [419] Got bottle of whiskey
     o> Used 2 bottle of used blood [23,14,24]
     -> Turn [394] Blood-Faced Volleyball
[421] Mix 1 whiskey and soda + 1 little paper umbrella [5,4,12]
     +> [421] Got leprechaun hatchling
     o> Drank 5 overpriced "imported" beer (10 adventures gained) [0,0,0]
     o> Drank 1 roll in the hay (14 adventures gained) [0,35,0]
[/code]

Rollover starts in 5 minutes and I don't have a way to mix a nightcap. I decide to go with the new brawl adventure in the tavern. Why? I wanted to see how much it sucked for myself.

I got 1 bottle of whiskey first turn from a 7foot drunk miner. The next turn the beer lens guy didn't drop a lens from me suckerpunching him for 1 damage a round so much for the minimum damage a round theory. I made my nightcap then I saw the whiskey guy again but don't get any more whiskey, then I get the leprechaun. I've definitely had enough of this "worthless" area. I wonder if this place is even better than the n00b cave... if I had more time I would've checked what booze I can find from various places.

I think "imported beer" is going to be my favorite booze a lot sooner than I thought. It costs 0 turns to get that stuff.

so yeah tomorrow is a muscle day so I meant to bank all those turns. The only bad thing that could happen is I could lose 3 turns by having the trapper want chrome which I could've got to today had I played all my turns. I'm still going to root for him wanting chrome though. I also would've had a different diet had I had more time to play, my semi rare is in 7 turns which will be a lunchbox most likely. I'll probably buy gluttony at the end of the day tomorrow to squeeze out a couple extra fullness.

The skeleton invasion has been eating up my extra time to log the rest of this run. I've lost motivation for it as well. I will but it will probably be after it's over... I'll give a quick update.

leveling without stat days is just such a grind....

after day 6 I'm level 10, 786 turns played ( I banked 3 just incase I hit the wheel because I know I'd hit the council like and finish the quest wasting a turn if I didn't bank them)...

I have only hit the Dungeon full of skeletons on accident once so far. I have 3 limes left and 6 cherries, that might be enough to last until the orchard.

The change to bounty hunting will effect which ones I keep and complete a little bit from now on in BM. I couldn't even complete a run and things have changed again. I mean now I can complete a stored bounty and then do the current days bounty... or at least accept a current days bounty. Basically I see this change just making it a little easier to complete more bounties. Yay...

I had some RL things I had to do and had problems on day 7 finishing turns right at rollover and didn't finish drinking ( 9 drunkeness un-used, rollover gear not put on and no nightcapping) that resulted in me losing about 40 turns overall...

Can't cry about split milk or something, day 8 complete, orchard and dooks done, found brains used hella smooth night capped and banked... I'll start with 80 turns tomorrow ( could've been 120 or so anyway)... I don't think that is enough to finish and hit nine days.

~20 turns for the nuns
25 battlefield till gremlins
15 gremlins
17 for the arena.....

Arena = Hidden City(untouched so far), HitS (2/7/8 so far), and pyramid
25 for the city
20 for hits
40 for the pyramid

18 to finish the war

? NS quest

I have 5 dance cards left so I'm not really concerned with not having the stats for level 13. I don't have a barnacle I do have a lucre still...

If I do get close at least I'll know that 9 days is possible without stat days...

end of day 9 ... battlefield clear, mcgaffin done. I decided to wait to kill the man till tomorrow because with only 15 adventures I wouldn't have enough turns to finish, I'll get an extra 450 meat from the farm by delaying the man's death till tomorrow... I suppose I could've used my extra drum machine for the prayer of a spice melange but I have a halloween party to get to.

I got a lunchbox semi rare and had already consumed to fullness so those extra turns along with the ones I missed from not drinking day 7..

It will all come down to what the NS quest gives me. I don't have gremlin juice... I do have an NG / bronzed locust and black pepper though... no barnacle either... 9 days was possible but it definitely wasn't guaranteed.

killed the NS at 1302 purposely burned turns pre-prism to finish at 1337 turns.. long story short if I would've had those ~ 40 turns I lost at the end of day 7, I would've made 9 days. I'd have had ~60 turns to do the NS quest and that would've been enough.

I had the most simple tower I've seen in a long time, all the gates items+ also had all 6/6 on tower items( listen to this line-up: pteuneo torpedo, spider web, firecracker, baseball, can lid, tropical orchard). The only bad thing was the giant freaking potato for the NS's second familiar, I didn't bother farming it before hand trying to not "waste" a lucre so it took a lot of turns farming it and leveling it because of course my pet snacks and arena buffs ran out.... had I been there day 9 with ~ 40 turns or so I would've before hand...

Hind sight is 20/20 but I believe in this situation I would've farmed the barnacle and burned delay() on the potato to protect myself against needing one of those. Doing that guarantees me 9 days, not doing it and needing a barrrnacle clearly can stop me.

Oh well at least I know without a doubt 9 days is doable for DBs without stat days...
