Forum functionality and URLs

Post by lostcalpolydude » Tue May 06, 2008 3:32 pm

I've noticed that some of the links to threads here don't work properly when I click them. Instead I get taken to the main forum page, even though I have permission to view the thread being linked to. Today I figured out that it's due to the www in the URL. More specific than that, the redirection occurs in firefox3b5 on OSX, but not in Safari. I noticed WeatherWarrior had the same issue. Clicking these links in the forum works just fine, it's trying to follow them from /clan or from Announcements that causes issues. I don't know if something can be done about that, or if this will just serve to help others having the same issue to know how to work around it.

wrong thread? maybe.

i've had the error i'm about to explain on a couple of other BB forums.

i will log in, using the login link at the top of the main site.

i will be shown LOGGED IN at the bottom of the main forum site. along with other people logged in.

however, i am nto logged in. as if my cookie was, lol, eaten by the ether.

i don't recall how the other sites were "fixed" but i know i haven't had this issue in a long time.

iirc, and im sitting in a room with paint fumes fwiw, trailing slashes were involved witha temporary solution.

additionally, the reason this "matters" to the user logging in, is all the "new post" color marking get reset. which is annoying.

Did you by chance log in with the URL www.alliancefromhell.com? I had that happen a few times. delete the "www." and you'll be back, logged in with all new posts marked.

I'm always logged in in both sites, alliancefromhell.com and http://www.alliancefromhell.com. I recommend the same for you too to avoid this annoying "feature" in the future. Of course, this won't help you if you log in from a public PC.

Now that I am logged in both at alliancefromhell.com and www.alliancefromhell.com, the issue in the first post is no more.

The requested URL /forum/viewtopic.php was not found on this server.

it looks like the /forum/ structure was removed, but apparently the board software isn't 100% aware of the change?

Kevbob beat me to it - just got the same thing. Taking the /forum off the URL allowed the forum to load normally.

this update breaks the rss feed too - all the links from the rss feed still have /forum/ in it (including images in the posts on the feed).

I try and pick a time when everyone is sleeping and god damn :D there are people still up. Fixing things as I go, I promise.

Edit: http://www.alliancefromhell.com/rss is now working for me. Please post up if you still find a problem.

Is it hard to stop going to www.alliancefromhell.com? Just delete it from the address bar history (should be Shift + Delete when that address is selected). The only significant place that still links to that address is the AFH clan credo (AFHk doesn't, and I recently changed BAFH). Maybe some people's sigs, people should probably change that if that's the case.

today, this, again. yay.

lostcalpolydude,
every person i've explained this to who didn't already agree with my [old internet's] position did not turn out to agree with me after an explanation. all i can say is, there are ways things are supposed to work, and there are ways things are not supposed to work. if at anypoint daduke, or whichever other admin is adminning, is bored/tired of playing with the config, i'll gladly stop offering site feedback.

edit-
daduke,
actually, i'm logged in on both.

Rather than start a new thread, I'll just threadjack.

For the last few days, I've really been having trouble loading the forums. Pinging the forums generate a lot of request time outs.

This is only happening in the AFH forums. Help?
I used to have a softcore multi. But now, it's just HC4L. Elayne.
