spam accounts

Post by VladimirPootin » Mon Apr 30, 2007 4:36 am

there are at least 3 recently registered spam accounts... they need to be deleted ASAP before this url ends up in a scary database.

I've gone through the names in the memberlist and came up with this quick list, none of the names on the list have kol accounts of the same name and those in the obvious spam list are those with questionable links in their profile.

Obvious Spam Accounts

Jhuetron
decaptotaly

No Kol character of same name

trif
Magikerarne
medricin

The ones without posts I won't delete, it could be someone in game, but I'll delete a few now...

There's a new rule up in the rules section, and I'm posting an announcement in both clans shortly to make sure they're not member accounts.

liaison is liaison84, so it's more understandable... she helped spade the bathroom and wanted stuff to read.

And a whole bunch of new accounts the last 2 days, with some obvious spam in there as well. Do accounts need to be manually activated here, or is registration enough to gain access to at least the intro forum?

Registration gets you into the intro forum and all the other public forums.

Re registration: would it be that difficult to exchange the captcha image (these can be botted, by the way) with a question? No spammer could answer things like "enter Zurich's KoL player ID here".

Back when we first started having problems, I looked around for a way to change it to a question, but couldn't find one.

We do have a semi-fix. In order to post an admin needs to approve their registration, but I'm not sure if this is still in effect.

I got rid of that, because all it prevented was them from posting, which it seems like they only do once in a blue moon. It does require email confirmation, though.

i've added a bunch of banned email hosts (mymail-in.net being the worst) to catch the most egregious spam... should help at least a little bit.

I didn't know you could do that... cool. Try and see if you can ban all the .ru and .uk accounts. I don't know any russians or ukranians that play KoL.

Hey, I noticed that you guys are still having problems with spam accounts signing up. I can give you the source code for an anti-spambot mod I wrote for my own forums if you want. It's based on the Humanizer mod except it goes one better and generates a random math problem that bots can't get around. It asks the user to add to numbers between 1 - 5 together. Easy for humans, impossible for bots that aren't specifically coded to solve it. PM me if you're interested.

It's getting rediculous. I've deleted a dozen spam posting in 2 days, all from guest posters. Is there a way to disable guest posting?

I went ahead ( wasn't busy ) and disabled guest posting. If you see any more activity just report it to me and I'll do my best to remedy it.

Does anyone else think that it's funny how the website option basically only gets used by the spam accounts? Makes them incredible easy to differentiate from the real accounts. :D

I've noticed that. Doesn't make it any less time consuming to delete them, though.

We have 971 registered users.

I'm betting 450-500, bare minimum need to be deleted.

I absolutely refuse to waste anymore of my life deleting these. There are plenty of scripts that will save me hours, if we can get some new hosting...

Change the registration process. Have people enter the player-id of chatbot or whatever. But stay away from script-readable captchas. And delete those 700 spam accounts afterwards...

The software's modifiable. Any idea could do it. Unfortunately, the kids at bizhat.com aren't just any idiots. They're idiots who don't much care about their clients, so they wont put in mods for us.

Last night I deleted nearly one thousand spam accounts

I was so fed up at the end I searched for a mod and implemented it as part of the registration process. To register there is now one additional field where the user has to enter the word 'Hell'. I have put in a clue for them as to what they enter and if they get it wrong it tells them the answer.

Let me know what you think, this isn't hugely different from that suggested above in this post and it will certainly stop the automatic spam accounts being registered.

Only slightly related, but go ahead and delete the account "i'm lost" also. I registered it, but I never got the confirmation email for it so I registered this account instead.
