New Styles Added

Post by DaDuke » Tue Jan 05, 2010 6:41 am

I have added the following new styles -

etech
black pearl
dirty board

You will notice that no attempt has been made to amended the graphics that comes with these. I am prepared to support *a few* different styles for this board but until we settle on which ones I don't want to put too much effort into amending the graphics (unless someone else does).

If you want more added please let me know.

Feedback in this post please.

D.

Hmm, etech's not bad. But it's weird that the rather important time-and-date-of-post is buried down at the bottom, while the relatively unimportant time-and-date-person-joined-the-forum is prominently displayed under the person's name.

Dirtyboard is clever, but rather busy-looking for my taste. Blackpearl doesn't really appeal to me, but that's just personal taste.

I basically agree with Greycat, although I'm sure I'd get used to finding the post time quickly. I think the best so far (for me) is the subsilver2.

Thanks DaDuke! It's great to have a few options to accommodate people's different wants.
Also, the default forum titles and graphics for the different styles make me giggle.

So far I actually like blackpearl, I like the way it displays and handles subforums better than the others. The only problems are minor, I wouldn't mind the yellows and oranges being a little less bright and black avatars with a transparent background don't show up (kujjie's shows as just a red stripe with eyes).

Hehe, yeah, the little rag doll at the bottom and the graffiti-type popups when you mouse over a topic in Dirtyboard 2.0 are cute!

Hmm switched to etech and I like it so far. Now if it would also be the standard layout whenever I search the login field(s) ;)

Kujjie is a better ninja now. Also, I made blackpearl use the full screen width instead of 960px (putting this here partly as documentation of my changes for later).

My solution is to not log out. Doesn't help with the Admin CP though.

Black pearl works wonderfully for me. eTech is nice, but like the kitteh of darkness and light says:

Yay. I found the tiny fixed width to be pretty annoying, so I'll check it out again.

I find that the time/date placement works fine for me, but the placement of the poster 'profile' and related buttons under the post, rather than with the poster's name, is a little awkward. Despite that, I'm a fan of etech--probably my style, depending on the results of my next stint with blackpearl.

Etech seems good. Is there any way to get the AFH banner at the top of it?

Are other people bothered by code tags being set to a specific size and a scrollbar if it goes longer? It makes it much harder to read for me, can it be disabled?

One other minor cosmetic thing... the purple color for admins fades into the background in black pearl. Not an urgent thing, but something I've noticed.

That's good to know. I was looking for something less obnoxious than the red color--I'll try again and check against all of the styles.

It's much more visible to me. I don't know if it was a problem for anyone else. I have a difficult time (old eyes) with contrast sometimes. Thank you.

2 more styles added (well 1 really in 2 colours)

AeroBlack
AeroRed (I quite like this one myself)

They look pretty, but they lack the new post links and other features. I'll be sticking with eTech myself.

I'm giving the AeroBlack a whirl, and the "View unread posts | View new posts | View your posts" thing is in the upper right, under the Logout button. In case you didn't notice it or something, I thought I'd give it a mention :)

Maybe if that thread is replaced by an equivalent one it will work. The actual cause is probably so bizarre that we won't be able to find it.

I've had the white screen show up every time I've tried to post something lengthy. I'm guessing this is because I have written it in word and then copy & pasted it here. The odd thing is that if I then go through it line-by-line, the only thing it rejects is parentheses.

I had that happening right now too in a forum pm. It also was something pre-written in word so I guess it has something to to with some special characters that word replaces some things with. After I replaced all my " - " and " ' " it worked again.

Maybe using Notepad would be better for typing things in another program? I doubt there's much that can be done about the forum not liking special characters.

Note that copy-pasting into notepad will clear out all the junk from word. At least it does for me, I've done that before.

For me, the whitescreen comes immediately after I hit "post reply."

But I am content just using etech. It's not a big deal.

As Lost said, using notepad works. For some reason, this does not. Maybe I have to save it and then open it again before copying it or something.

None of the seven styles any longer allow me to post in the AFHk Hobopolis points thread. Each of them whitescreens when I hit "post reply." I am using Chrome in Windows Vista.

I like etech, and I see several others have mentioned it. Can we get its title to be something other than "Our Community: where you are always welcome," please? It's a nice sentiment, but it doesn't seem to quite be "us." Although, it does make me laugh a little sometimes!

I don't know what the issue was, but the only way that I could change the style seen by logged out users was to deactivate prosilver, and then reactivate it, which means everyone got moved from prosilver (if that's what they were using) to eTech. You can change back now though.

Since Etech seems to be the default I just switched to it, but what's really bugging me (and the reason I didn't switch earlier) is that the timestamp for posts is at the bottom. For longer posts this is inconvenient, is there any chance we can move that somewhere less stupid?

Would it be at all possible to get rid of the animated smileys? They annoy the everylasting crap out of me, and hitting [ESC] every time I'm posting is a giant pain. Is there any way to partition them so that the animated ones are in the "View more smilies" link?

Are you referring to all the basic yellow smilies that have some animation, or just the frog? I generally just use adblock for that type of stuff.

Really just the frog. And I figured that adblock is a poor solution on our forums, since that kind of stuff might actually get changed and I doubt I'm the only one annoyed by it.

Oh, now I understand. That setting will prevent :) from turning into a graphical smiley when you post, but won't remove them from the left pane.

As for adblock, why not just block alliancefromhell.com/images/smilies/* or even */smilies/* if you hate them so much that you want to banish them from most sites?

The issue isn't seeing them in other peoples' posts, it's seeing them on the left while posting. The worst offender is gone now anyway, so it's not even much of a problem.

While looking at the two most recent updates of Kel's in his catmoon thread there were some giant black boxes in the middle of my screen. Has anyone else experienced anything like that?

Using eTech for log viewing, I'm not seeing anything like that.

I saw something like that tonight, but it went away pretty quickly.

I've had black horizontal lines across the screen at some different zoom settings. I think the CSS is a bit weird, but only happened for some zooms.
